Evan placed foil over the brownies that smelled more like charcoal than chocolate and took a deep breath. Today was going to be the day. She was going to talk to her brothers about this freeze out and she was going to get her family back. Every street that she passed with her chocolate coated charcoal brownies was another chip away at her confidence. Maybe this wasn't the best idea she had ever had. Maybe she should have texted Gaspard to give him a heads up or even tried to call Will again one more time.
This was a terrible idea.
This was a terrible idea.
This was the worst idea she had ever had.
Every floor up the Eloise was a stab on her heart and the loud booming echos that this was not a good idea pulsed through her veins.
Evan gripped the pan with her attempt at brownies and knocked on the suddenly large and looming door of The Elosie's penthouse. She took in a deep breath and tried to steady her nerves. She had heard that Gaspard and Will were hanging out and took it upon herself to come over. It had been weeks since she texted with her older brother and she missed Will more than anything. She just wanted things to be okay. Hell, she just wanted him to say something to her and let them get over it.
This freeze out thing was killing her and she was ready to let Will just yell at her and let them get passed it. Evan knocked again on the door, shifting in her heels. She missed Will and she just wanted to show him that being in a relationship with Monday wasn't going to change anything. She loved her brothers and she hated that she felt like she wasn't able to spend time with both of them. Evan looked at the brownies that she brought, regretting not asking Monday to make them for her. The edges were burnt and she was pretty sure there were multiple eggs worth of shells in the mix but she tried.
Just like how she was trying to show Will that she loved him and that she was sorry for lying to him. Deadly brownies and a reasonable wine in her purse and she was going to show Will that everything was okay. Hopefully, Gaspard would have read books on relationships (he read books on almost everything so she wasn't even surprised by anything anymore) and would be able to help both of them through this.
Assuming someone would be able to open the door first.

Gaspard was uncomfortable with the entire situation. He didn't like conflict of any kind and frankly he ended up in the middle of every sibling squabble whether they had anything to do with his being or not. He didn't like being around people who were angry because angry people were unpredictable. He didn't like tension and he sure's hell did not appreciate when his siblings made him entirely uncomfortable but fortunately he was able to enjoy time with Will as long as Evan was out of the picture. It was a harsh thought, though true and it was better to be honest about one's feelings than to keep them suppressed in order to make others feel better.
Anyway it was actually more than a great time because on that particular day Will had obtained a cat. She was regal and Gaspard was the proudest uncle there ever was.
"Make sure you don't believe everything you read online. A lot of people like to put their cats on diets because they believe it's right to force their animals into a hipster lifestyle or whatever but it's often very unhealthy for the animals. My website has a lot of information on what you can feed her, though. It's reliable information because I researched and there are eight credible works cited on the bottom if you have any doubts."
He was sitting on the couch watching the cat eagerly when the knock got him to look up. He stood up, though he left it to Will to open the door.
"Evan?" he called awkwardly, taking a step away from the door. "You can't lose your temper in front of Duchess-- she'll think it's a representation of your average behavior," he warned Will in a hushed tone.

part of him knew that a cat was probably a bad idea. He worked out of town a lot, though less now that the whole mutant dust-up was still going, and he wasn’t exactly sure how he could handle caring for another living being full time. That concern had quickly fled, however, when he found the fluffy white cat in the back. She wasn’t scared or desperate like all of the other cats, and she had hardly seemed to notice him. Somehow, that drew him toward her; he always had a thing for haughty girls. When Gaspard forced him to do a bonding exercise, the cat had continued to ignore him until the very last second, but then she seemed to approve of him. He couldn’t not adopt her after that. [break][break]
They had already gone to the pet store and racked up on supplies for that cat-to-be, “in order to maximize the crucial bonding time post-adoption” or something like that. Will had spent so much time the night before putting together the cat tree, only for Duchess to level her eyes at it and promptly ignore it. She had taken swimmingly to the rhinestone collar though, but that was no surprise. She picked her way around the apartment in order to acclimate to her new surroundings, the little bell on the end of her collar the only noise she made. [break][break]
Watching her, Will almost forgot about all the shit he was trying so hard not to think about. Almost. [break][break]
He was in the kitchen preparing Duchess’s evening meal when someone knocked on the door. He craned his neck out of the kitchen, half-expecting Gaspard to tell him he had hired a cat expert to help Duchess get settled. But Gaspard looked just as surprised, and so he set the cat food down and slid toward the door. When opening it revealed Evan, he thought, just for a second, about shutting it again, but she had bothered to bring wine and something that was probably supposed to be brownies. Besides, it was generally frowned upon to shut the door in your baby sister’s face. [break][break]
”Don’t worry, G. I’m not gonna yell at her,” he grumbled as he moved aside so she could enter. Yelling at Evan would do absolutely nothing; it never had before.
When the door opened, she almost ran away. This was a horrible idea and all she wanted to do was get her brother back in her life. She missed him, and even more than that, she wanted Will back in Monday's life. She loved them both too much to see them fighting like this. She relaxed her shoulders when she saw Gaspard and took in a small breath to steady her nerves, "I'm not here to lose my temper, Gaspard. We all know I am the epitome of level headedness in this family." She looked over his shoulder at the hulking cry baby himself and tried to resist the urge to poke and prod in his mind just to see where exactly she sat with him and how he was expecting her to apologize so she could even see if this was a worthy task to even attempt.
Evan stepped into the apartment and hugged her middle brother, reaching on her toes a little to wrap an arm around his shoulder. People thought she wore heels on the time because she was vain or enjoyed how it made her butt look, when really it was because her brothers and boyfriend were all sky scrappers. "Who is Duchess anyway?" She asked releasing her brother and stepping into the penthouse fully. Duchess sounded like some sugar baby and given how sad Will had been since he found out, she wouldn't be surprised.
Evan handed over the plate of brownies to Gaspard, knowing that they were inedible but they were proud Southerns and no one showed up uninvited without a baked good. It was part of the culture. She pulled the wine out of her bag and looked at her older brother, "Thought we could either drink this and scream at each other and get it all out, or you can just take this and my apology and we can work past this like a family, Guillaume." She was brash, she knew that. It was part of the reason why they thought it was a good idea for Monday to tell Will for them. They thought that it would come out better as a man to man conversation but they never took into account that Will reacted to bad news like a little girl.
She loved her brother, but he was dramatic and she was being forced to apologize for stealing his boyfriend, when all she felt she should apologize for was lying.

The cat was the best idea Will had had in his entire life. Gaspard was willing to bet on it. What was not a good idea was this confrontation.
Gaspard followed Will, the anticipation bubbling through his stomach. He offered his sister a wave when she came in.
"Oh, Duchess is this cat," he informed, gesturing toward her.
"Here, I'll do this. Where did you leave off?" he asked Will, going to where he'd been preparing Duchess's food. "You've been following the measurements exactly?" he asked, because if he hadn't been then Gaspard had half a mind to throw it out a window and start over.
Red crept up his neck and face as he averted eye contact with either of his siblings. "Did you bake something, Ev?" he asked, giving a nice cough after to indicate to Will that he could have tried acknowledging her effort (though he was careful to "cough" into his arm and away from the food-- he wasn't a barbarian). "It smells a little burnt but I think it's nice that you took the time to bake. Very thoughtful," he offered.
Could he have lied and said that they smelled good?
No, because he was Gaspard.
They weren't even necessarily bad. Some people enjoyed a little crisp with their baked goods. Gaspard wasn't really a fan but he was no one to judge anyone else's preferences, really.
The tension was honestly killing him. He hadn't taken sides from the beginning and he just wanted it to be over with.

uchess’s light eyes seemed to appraise the new woman before she rubbed her head territorially against Will’s ankle. He picked her up to rub her chin, and she purred loudly, still looking at Evan as though daring her to come closer into her domain. ”This is Duchess; you can’t take her too.” That wasn’t even what he was mad about, but he still felt the need to make it clear. He would have eventually been okay if someone had just told him when it first happened, not a year after the fact. That was the worst part about it. He had seen both of them nearly every day for an entire year, and neither of them had said anything, at all. He hated being out of the loop more than anything; he hated secrets.[break][break]
That was why he loved Gaspard so much. Gaspard wasn’t capable of telling a lie or keeping a secret.[break][break]
Will gestured at the bowl and cutting board he had left out. ”I was chopping the chicken,” he informed Gaspard, trusting him more than anyone else to take over Duchess’s meal. He didn’t think that wielding a sharp knife gave the best or most relaxing image for his sister at the moment. It wasn’t as though he would actually even think about it; wielding sharp objects and throwing heavy ones had always been Evan’s shtick. He wiped his hands on his trousers and crossed his arms, trying to feel comfortable again in his own damn home.[break][break]
He leaned a hip haphazardly against the couch arm, but he couldn’t quite make eye contact with Evan. ”I’m absolutely not going to yell at, E. I don’t do that. I just…I’m disappointed.” His chest rose and fell with a great breath, and he finally hazarded a glance to Evan’s general direction. ”Do you even know what you’re apologizing for?” He doubted it; Evan had a rather...convenient relationship with truths, as in, she mostly made up her own and ran with them until everyone else just let her have her way. She wasn’t used to being denied.
This fucking cat had all of the attitude that Will did on his worst day and he looked like a James Bond villain holding her fluffy self. Evan tried to keep her composure when her brother approached, mostly because she really did miss him so much, and in general, showing human emotion made her wildly uncomfortable. "I didn't take Monday from you, I fully accept that you two have a love deeper than anything in this world. I thought it would be unbreakable no matter what." The two of the sobbing constantly and missing the other was getting old and she was willing to do whatever it took to make things right.
Even if it meant giving up on being with Monday after everything that they had to go through to be together.
The Charbonneau siblings were the only family that she had. Their mother killed herself, their father was a piece of shit, their step-mother used to read Evan her bedtime stories. She wasn't ready to say goodbye to her brothers over this. No matter how much it would hurt her. "Cutting up chicken for her? Don't they sell that cat food kibbles in the grocery store? Can't she just eat that?" She never had a pet and honestly didn't think she would ever be able to handle one. She worked long hours, she enjoyed her free time too much. A cat like Duchess was too high strung for Evan and she was fine with that.
"Thanks Gassy." She said, handing over the brownies that were more like chocolate flavored charcoal at this point. She just wanted this to go well and she was pretty sure that they were off to the worst start ever. "Do I know why I'm apologizing? Yes, Guillaume. I lied to you. We lied to you for a year. I'm so sorry about that but I love you and I want us to put this behind us." Keeping her voice even was the worst experience because all she wanted to do was shake her brother until his stupid brain realized that his sister and his best friend were both happy and that he should be happy for them.
