Cora hummed as she made her way into the animal shelter, pulling her coat a little bit tighter around her. Despite the fact that it was still almost unseasonably warm, there was a chill in the air that signified that winter was definitely here, and while she didn’t hate it, she certainly missed the humid heat that seemed to permeate Louisiana in the summer. Yes, Cora’s favorite season was summer, despite the fact that her favorite holiday was Christmas. It was not something that she’d ever really felt the need to question either, thank you very much. The heat, she had found, had a tendency to make everybody slow down just a little, so that they could enjoy their surroundings as much as possible, though it did have a tendency to make more than a few people be… easily irritated. The winter months were fine and festive, but they didn’t exactly encourage exploration or talking to people, not when everybody was hurrying along, desperate to get out of the cold.
Around this time of year, Cora made a point to stop down at the animal shelter and volunteer what little time she did have. Between becoming an intern with In the NOLA and her part time job at the Quarter Cafe, on top of the fact that she was still in school, she was stretched pretty thin, but she took at least a few hours a month, if not more, to stop down and check in on the animals, as well as volunteer her own time for anything that they might need. The fact that this usually meant taking out some of the more… senior cats and dogs and making sure that they were played with or walked was just a perk to the time that she spent surrounded by that many animals. She had brought Astrid Isobel Perona with her a few times, but her roommate had some homework that she had to finish on this particular trip, and since Cora was a massive overachiever, she had already finished it. As much as she hated to say it, she had a feeling that some of the staff might be relieved. Most of the animals didn’t react to her shifter best friend very well, which was tragic, but Asha still came and helped out when and where she could.
Cora checked in, managed to wrangle a kitten that hadn’t been getting much attention—the poor thing had been getting neglected because it had feline AIDS, as if a human could catch it from a cat—and had been on her way to the play room when a familiar head of hair caught her eye. Turning slightly, she smiled brightly when she realized that she did indeed recognize the person who was standing in the room. “Jaxon!” She called out to him, shifting the little gray kitten over to one arm to wave at him, before realizing that they were close enough that she could just… walk up to him and it would be fine. “Hey! I was just heading to the playroom with this little angel.” She held up the kitten still curled up in her arms. “Want to nab a cat and come with?”
Jaxon Kane Davies| This is awful but most of my starters are XD If you need more, let me know ♥
Jaxon loved this time of year. He had a new home where he could be safe with his family, he had a girl who was by his side and cared for him. He wanted to try to give back to the house that meant so much to him. When Astor encouraged the residents to volunteer in the community, he was out the door first. He was sure that he would be able to pick that apart, his lack of any positive male role models in his life and now his determination to make Ash and Phalanx proud of him. Aisling was off hanging out with Cam, and he pulled his sneakers onto his feet. There was an animal shelter nearby and some of the other kids always mentioned going there and being able to play with cute cats and dogs. He never had a pet before, and he always wanted one. Pets were liabilities growing up, another mouth to feed and someone else to take care of. He thought about getting a dog, something that he could train to bite anyone who tried to hurt his siblings.
Walking into the center, he grinned at the rows of animals all eagerly awaiting for his attention and love. After a quick conversation and a walk though, he stopped in front of a sweet little black cat with three legs instead of four. He opened the cage and grinned when the sweet little one practically leapt into his arms. He nuzzled the cat, petting the top of his head and down its back. When he heard someone call his name, he almost thought that it was that cat. Given everything he had been seeing at Phalanx lately, there was little surprise. He knew that Ash, Sirius, and Astrid could turn into wolves, but he didn't know if they were able to speak while maintaining an animal form. He would have to ask once this purr machine was out of his arms. He looked at the cat squarely in the bright yellow eyes, "You talking to me?" When he realized that it was Cora, a girl from Phalanx talking to him, he instantly felt stupid and really hoped that it would be able to stay between them.
He smiled when he saw Cora and held up the little black tripod in his arms, "Playroom? Yeah! Sure, let's go." He held the cat against him and walked with Cora to the playroom area. "Do you get down here often?" His hand absently scratching the side of his black cat as they walked. He wanted to connect with other members of Phalanx, want to get to know the people around him and not just focus all of his attention on Aisling (as much as he would really love to do that).
Cora loved helping out down at the animal shelter; there was something about spending time with the fuzzy little creatures that made her feel a little more bright, like she had a little more spring in her step. This was especially true with cats, it was almost like having one purring in her lap unlocked something in her brain, something that felt warm, fuzzy, content in a way that she couldn’t explain. She wasn’t looking too deeply into the “why”, she preferred to just enjoy the moment that her brain finally went quiet and felt some of the warmth that she projected into the world. It was a similar feeling to the one that she got when she was sitting on the roof with Jude and Asha, looking up at the stars while bundled up in a sweater, or hanging out and watching a movie while drinking hot cocoa. There was a reason that she wanted to get a cat, but that was something that she hadn’t even begun to float with Mr. Perona, and she was honestly terrified to.
“You talking to me?” Cora giggled quietly as she nuzzled against the little kitten’s head, giggling again as she felt the sandpaper tongue at the tip of her nose. She had spent a little bit of time with Jaxon, but she honestly hadn’t spent much with him, even though she had intended to. She knew that he was new to the house, and she had a tendency to roll out the welcome wagon, but she hadn’t wanted to overwhelm him. In the end, it seemed like he had fallen in with his own group, and they hadn’t exactly been the closest in age, though she had never let that stop her before. Besides, from what she knew of his siblings, they were pretty cool people, and she knew that she definitely liked hanging around with Ezra at the very least. Piper was a little more intense, and though Jaxon had never really given her that impression, she still wasn’t quite sure what to make of him.
“Unless there’s another Jaxon around here, I’m definitely talking to you.” Cora’s green eyes were wide and sweet as she tilted her head slightly to the side, silently noting the way that the kitten in her arms was kneading the flesh of her arm as she purred. She was a beautiful cat, black and brown markings all over her fur that didn’t mix, but instead presented in splotches that made her just that much more perfect. Wide, yellow green eyes peered up at her as she reached up, gently scritching behind her right ear, before turning her eyes towards Jaxon once more. Did she know that Jaxon was addressing the cat instead of her, believing that there was a cat shifter in his arms? Well… she would never say. The last thing that she wanted was to make a potential friend embarrassed or upset, especially when they were just now getting better acquainted as people. “Although I could be talking to the little cutie in your arms, I’m pretty sure I can hear them purring from here.” The kitten in her own arms purred louder, as if offended that she had made a comment about another cat while she had a perfect angel of a kitten right there in her arms. Smiling, she hugged the cat a little closer, burying her face in her fur.
The pair of them made their way to the playroom, and Cora glanced up at the man next to her as he asked her a question. “As often as I can, honestly.” The kitten in her arms buried her head against her arm, and Cora smiled fondly down at her. “Between my job, my internship, and homework it’s kind of a pain finding time, but I just love these little ones so much.” She smiled, pulling open the door to the playroom and standing back, letting Jaxon walk in before she made her way in as well. “What about you?”
