Cora Elaine Marshall
the basics
full name ♦ Cora Elaine Marshall nicknames ♦ Cor age ♦ Seventeen birthday ♦ March 18th, 2001 occupation ♦ Barista at the Quarter Cafe (part time) school ♦ Phalanx Home species ♦ Human ability/power ♦ Shadow manipulation how the ability works ♦ TRIGGER WARNING: Mentions of depression and vindictive teasing (verbal) from this point onward.
Cora’s ability allows her to generate and to manipulate shadows and general darkness. When it comes to generation, this is typically localized around her form, but she can usually manipulate shadows within the same room or relative space as her. This tends to happen when she’s particularly emotional, and there are times when she actually has a problem shutting off this particular ability. For example, there was a moment when she was about thirteen where some guys were picking on her, and she became both angry and afraid enough that the shadows seemed to explode from her body, wrapping her in a cocoon that made the boys unable to see exactly where she was. For those moments, she was shrouded in complete darkness, and it is simultaneously one of the coolest and most terrifying moments of her life. Prolonged usage of her ability, however, can trigger deep depressive episodes that Cora can’t seem to snap herself out of. It’s gotten so bad in the past that she’s checked herself into the hospital due to prolonged exposure to her own ability. gender ♦ Female - she/her/hers sexuality ♦ Pansexual
the appearance
face claim ♦ Kimmy Schram height and weight ♦ 5’6” and 120 lbs. identifying features ♦ Septum piercing and one small birthmark on the side of her wrist. She jokingly calls it a witch’s mark every chance she gets. overall appearance ♦ The first thing that most people notice about Cora Marshall is the shock of blue hair on top of her head, which can range from bright blue to a lighter blue-gray, depending on how recently she’s colored it. It is incredibly rare that she will go back to her natural color, which is blonde. From there, they usually notice that she’s about average height, reaching a towering 5’6”, and that she’s rather slender, though she does have a few curves to speak of. As far as dressing styles go, Cora tends to classify it as a feminine bohemian style, which means lots of floral prints and soft, flowy clothing, which she finds works just as well in the Louisiana heat as it did in California. That isn’t to say that she can’t dress down or more casually, but it’s much more likely that you’ll find her in a skirt and a crop top than it is jeans and a t-shirt. She has two favorite pairs of shoes, a pair of simple black zip up booties that come up to her ankle, and a pair of black cloth flats. Both of these have been worn so many times that if she were less careful with her shoes in general, they probably would have had multiple holes in them. However, she is a bit of a shoe hoarder, and she makes a conscious effort to ensure that all of her shoe-children get equal amounts of love.
the personality
likes ♦ +Soft clothing +Good dreams +Jazz music +Writing +Iced sweet tea +The color blue dislikes ♦ -Her own ability -Mood swings -Country music -Cowboy boots -Leather -Hot drinks strengths ♦ +Bubbly +Optimistic +Confident +Resourceful weaknesses ♦ -Bottles up stress -Secretive -A little socially awkward -Overprotective dreams ♦ Cora’s biggest dream is to live her life completely in control of her ability. She wants to be free of it altogether because of what it does to her, but since she knows that’s not possible, she would really just love to never have to use it, and never lose control of it. fears ♦ Losing control of her ability, using too much, and not checking herself into the hospital. overall personality ♦ There are a lot of people who are confused by Cora in general, not necessarily because of her ability, but because of who she is as a person. See, she’s the type of person who will meet new people and start mothering them almost instantly, and she has a kind word for just about anybody that she interacts with on a regular basis. However, she also has very few close friends, and there are very few people who really know anything detailed about her, including about her family. When asked about herself, Cora never really goes too deep into who she is, and will sometimes lie to avoid betraying personal information. The one thing that everybody seems to agree on is that Cora’s best friend is the journal that she keeps in her bag at all times, and she can frequently be seen writing in it. Despite this, she is the person that everybody seeks out when they need affirmation or to be uplifted, and she gives those things happily.
There are very few people who have seen her in the middle of a depressive episode, because there are very few people who have seen her use her ability for more than a few seconds. In fact, there are those who aren’t really sure that she has any kind of ability at all, until they see the few wisps of black, smoky shadow at her fingertips when she gets upset. However, this darker part of her is a very real force, and it’s one that she can’t ignore, no matter how hard she tries.
the history
father ♦ Alexander Marshall, 47, marketing manager mother ♦ Cecily Marshall (nee Alexandria), 48, CEO siblings ♦ N/A important people ♦ N/A hometown ♦ San Francisco, California overall history ♦ When Alexander Marshall and Cecily Alexandria met, the two of them were at the same university, both studying business. In the beginning, the two of them said that they hated each other, despite their similarities and the fact that every single person in their lives seemed to think that they were perfect for each other. It wasn’t until the two of them were in their junior year that they realized that maybe, just maybe, their friends were right, and after one slightly buzzed confession later, the two of them opted to give dating a try. It was a slightly turbulent relationship in the beginning, both of them were incredibly driven individuals who had strong opinions that often clashed. However, after they both graduated and began their professional lives, things finally began to settle down, and they eventually moved in together. Cecily didn’t discover that she was pregnant until she started experiencing morning sickness while she was at work, and while there was a part of her that thought it was a bit of an inconvenience all things considered, there was also an overwhelming feeling of joy as she told Alexander that she was pregnant. It was shortly after that the two of them married, though he always got the feeling that Cecily was hiding something from him.
Truth be told, she was. Cecily had been born with the ability to manipulate light, and while she had a very good grasp on her ability, during her pregnancy the ability seemed to shift and intensify. It wasn’t until one night when she lost control over dinner, and nearly blinded her husband, that she actually told him about the ability. He was understanding, thankfully, and the two of them moved forward with the understanding that there were some things about her life, and potentially the life of their child, that he might not be able to understand.
However, when Cora was born, something… changed. Any time that Cecily used her ability around her child, even something as simple as a little ability made nightlight in the corner of her room, Cora wouldn’t stop screaming. It was like she couldn’t stand the ability, and for a long time, Cecily didn’t know why. However, when Cora was two, she had a particularly bad tantrum. This was the moment that her ability manifested, black wisps of shadow falling from her fingers and spreading through the room, choking out all sources of light. From that moment, Cecily realized that her daughter had the polar opposite ability that she did, which also meant that her own power could potentially injure her daughter. From that moment forward, Cecily did everything that she could to control her ability, so that it wasn’t potentially harming or traumatizing her daughter. However, she also found that the same things that triggered her own power didn’t seem to trigger her daughters, and so the way that she had learned to control her power didn’t work either. Still, if you asked Cora what her childhood was like, you would have gotten a very standard answer, because despite the oddity of her ability, her parents were adamant that she would have a somewhat normal upbringing. As a small child, she enjoyed a lot of hobbies, most notably making up her own stories and acting them out for her parents. Schooling was fairly typical, that is, until the first time that she had… issues. When she was ten, there was an incident when she lost control of her power, and she couldn’t turn it off, until the fear of it made her faint. However when she woke up, she was moody and irritable, and doing anything felt like walking through a thigh-high snowbank. Being so young, she didn’t know what was wrong with her, but after talking to her mother about it, the two of them went to a doctor, who promptly diagnosed her with clinical depression.
However, as she grew older, both she and her mother realized that her symptoms were directly linked with her losing control of her power, or using it too much. It was only then that her mother made the decision to send her daughter away, mostly because she didn’t quite know how to help her and wanted her with people who could. So, she made her way to Louisiana, and while both her mother and her father went down their with her, before long both of them had to return to their jobs that waited for the back in California, leaving Cora there to adjust to the new life that she was living. For the past seven years, she has been experimenting with her own ability, though there have certainly been times when she’s overdone it badly enough to check herself into the hospital because she’s afraid of the massive lows, and what they might make her do. Luckily, she’s never gotten to that point, but it’s still something that scares her. Around the time that she was thirteen, there was an incident where she was being picked on in the Quarter, and she lost control of her ability, the anger eating away at the layers of suppression and self control until it was too much, and the power exploded from her. Black shadow wrapped around her like a cocoon, an ever shifting cocoon made of darkness that shielded her from the boys.
By the time that she had regained control, nearly blacking out in the process, the boys had gone, and she hadn’t even returned to Phalanx, but checked herself into the hospital instead. She knew what was coming, and it wouldn’t be pretty. She certainly didn’t want anybody else around to see it. When she returned a few days later, she pretended nothing was wrong, and continued with her life and her work, with one major exception. Anytime she was asked to use her ability, she refused to do so; she didn’t want to feel that familiar tug in the pit of her stomach, the vaguely unsettling nausea. She didn’t want to feel any of it, so instead she shut it all away. When she turned sixteen, Cora decided that she needed to start saving up some money to move forward in her life, because she didn’t want to stay at Phalanx Home for the rest of her life. Mostly by luck, she thinks, she secured a job at the quarter cafe, a little place in the French Quarter that she had been getting coffee from—thanks to a parental allowance—regularly in the past year or so. Now, she’s looking forward to the future, while still suppressing her ability. Whether or not that will cause problems, she isn’t sure, but she isn’t exactly asking those kinds of questions either.
