victory's contagious
The news of the Monroeville break-out had finally made it into normie news. Amongst the regular humans there were whispers. People who could do extraordinary things. Impossible things. Life as a mutant was teetering on an unstable balance point even before all of this. This was the feather that broke, well, everything. After today the world would know who they are. There would be no more hiding, no more living in the dark.
Nerys Oswald straightened her smart suit jacket and dusted off the imaginary dirt from her shoulder. Her eyes never left her reflection in the mirror. It was well into the evening at Nerys's summer home in France. The streets outside of her luxurious apartment were illuminated, the Eiffel Tower had sparkled from her window just about an hour ago. She checked her watch. Not much time left. Earlier that day Nerys had called for a press conference in her hometown of New Orleans at 3pm sharp. It was less than five till. A devilish smirk adorned the woman's features - it looked so natural there that one might be concerned if she wasn't.
"Best let them squirm a bit." She told herself as she sprayed a light perfume on to her wrists and neck. It had been nearly a week since the outbreak - some of her former colleagues in the States had let her know several days after that. They got a good scolding for being so late, Nerys loathed being out of the loop.
Most people hated speaking in front of crowds. Bad anxiety, sweaty hands, stuttering all over the place, but not Nerys. After months of mindless self indulgement, this is what calmed her spinning mind. The idea of being in the spotlight again. In front of a crowd, demanding their attention. Her entire body felt like it gave a sigh of relief as soon as she called for that press conference. There was nothing but a dull joy thrumming in her bones. Nerys had no regrets about what she was about to do. No thoughts for the chaos she might soon release. Just calm.
The expensive watch on her wrist ticked three. It was time. With one last glance to her reflection, Nerys gave her self a nod of assurance, and opened a portal right in front of New Orleans City Hall. With a confidence that couldn't be taught, Nerys walked through her portal with her head held high.
She could feel the New Orleans sticky heat before she saw the city itself. It was honestly something she wasn't expecting to miss. As Nerys appeared in front of the cameras and crowd, a gasp seemed to roar over them. All eyes were on her, and she wouldn't have it any other way. The woman stepped up to the podium in front of her with an authority that would make most wilt.
"My name is Nerys Oswald. I am a mutant. And I am running for mayor."
