He couldn't believe she was gone. The words had hit him like a truck. He couldn't breathe. His diaphragm felt tight... like it was surrounded by steel. Each time he attempted to suck in some oxygen, the soft walls of the muscle scraped against the steel sending sharp pain up his spine.

He didn't want to talk-- he didn't want to think. Everyone kept saying that they were available to talk if he needed it. It was a nice gesture, but it did nothing for him.

He wanted to forget. And no matter how many minutes he was able to escape, the loss would inevitably hit him again.

It was incapacitating.

Color drained from his face as he quickly returned to his room, keeping his head down in an attempt to hide the tears dripping from his eyes.

Shaky hands shut his door and clicked the lock on the knob. Every muscle in his body ached as he dropped onto his bed, stuffing his face in a pillow. 

Bzzz.

Without looking up, his hand reached out and silenced his phone.
