full name ♦ kohana chotke nicknames ♦ koh if you don't have time for the other three letters age ♦ twenty-six birthday ♦ september 3rd occupation ♦ psychiatric nurse at our lady of the lake hospital school ♦ primrose alumni species ♦ human ability/power ♦ persuasion how the ability works ♦
Kohana has the ability to persuade people to think (and do) things he wants by inserting thoughts directly into their heads. He can only insert new thoughts, not change or manipulate any existing thoughts, though a new thought may ‘overwrite’ an old thought by say, convincing someone that a conversation they had happened in a dream.
The thoughts are also only thoughts- he is persuasive, but not compulsive. The difference between persuasion and compulsion is that Kohana is simply giving them the desire to do something, not forcing them to be a mindless zombie until they do it. Persuasion is most effective when the person is willing, at least to some extent, to do the thing they’re being persuaded to do. For example, it is much easier to persuade a normally violent person to attack their worst enemy than it is to persuade a sworn pacifist to attack a friend. It’s also much easier to persuade someone to do something relatively normal (like say, go open a window) than something very out of character (like pretending they’re a hippopotamus).
If Kohana knows his subject well, he’ll tailor the thoughts to their normal activities and feelings and it’s likely the person being manipulated will never realize that the thought was not theirs. If the thought is very out of character for the person (like the hippo example or telling a pacifist he wants to punch someone) they person being manipulated may be confused for a moment and then brush aside the thought without acting on it because it was a dumb idea. Someone with a strong mental awareness or similar ability may also be less vulnerable to his persuasion.
In order for him to put thoughts into someone’s head, he needs to be making eye contact, and concentrating fully. If someone is too far to make direct contact with, they are effectively out of his range. If his eyes are in any way covered or damaged, he can’t use his ability. Similarly, his ability can be difficult (though not impossible) to use in stressful situations or situations where a lot is going on, where he can’t concentrate solely on the message he’s trying to put in someone’s mind.
Kohana’s powers are amplified when, along with direct eye contact and full concentration, he is also making physical contact with the person he’s persuading. If all three of those conditions are met (or his powers are being amplified through some other circumstance) his ability is more similar to compulsion in that the thoughts he implants are at the very forefront of the person’s mind and very hard to ignore or rationalize.

the appearance
face claim ♦ eric balfour height and weight ♦ 6'2 & 180 identifying features ♦ multiple tattoos on his arms and back overall appearance ♦
Kohana has a charming, mildly predatory look to him- less “i’m gonna kick your ass” and more “i’m gonnna talk you into paying way too much on a shitty used car”. He’s very charming and good at using his facial expressions to subtly convey messages.
Build wise, he’s tall and thin and not particularly well muscled. He’s got a few scars all of which are covered by different tattoos. He has a lot of tattoos, including a large pirate piece across his back, and skulls, tribal markings, and a quote on his arm.
He dresses in mostly casual dark colors and layers, but suits his appearance to where he’s going and how he wants others to see him, comfortable in both formal suits and stark naked. He has a few pieces of tribal jewelry that he does not take off.
the personality
likes ♦
- being around people - getting what he wants - classic rock music - laid back bars - sex - meditating
dislikes ♦
- being rejected - assholes who hurt kids - the fact dakota can see through his shit - having to actually work - people who complain about everything
strengths ♦
- kohana is amazing at reading people. he’s a great judge of character, and can usually tell when someone’s upset/lying/etc. - he really truly loves his siblings and would do anything for them. - he has a lot of control over his emotions, and appears very charming, calm, and composed all the time.
weaknesses ♦
- koh is pretty much dependent on his ability to do basically everything. - he has a temper that could rival their father’s, though he rarely shows it. - like the rest of the chotkes, kohana too suffers from addiction. he’s kept this secret from most of his family by using his ability to get prescription narcotics from the hospital he works at.
dreams ♦
- kohana would struggle with this question. he doesn't really have any long term goals. when he wants something, he just does it
fears ♦
- losing his vision - losing his family - hurting someone
overall personality ♦
Kohana is the successful Chotke. At least, that’s how it looks on paper. He hasn’t tried to kill himself like his sister or fucking assaulted anyone like his brother. He did well in school and got a good job and a nice apartment. He’s got a busy social life and lots of friends and he’s Absolutely Fucking Fine(TM).
In reality, Kohana’s entire life is based around an elaborate series of lies. Kohana’s a compulsive liar. He doesn’t even need his ability to do it. He’s fully capable of coming up with bullshit stories on the fly, and sprinkling in just enough of the truth to make them believable. He's even managed to lie to himself.
‘Works smarter, not harder’ is pretty much his motto in life. He takes the easy way out of most (see, all) issues and uses his extra ability to attain success. He’s fairly selfish and not above or against using his powers on anyone, and sees them as a tool he was given, a part of who he is rather than cheating or giving himself an unfair advantage.
The only thing Kohana was ever really interested in learning about was people. He can read people like they’re a fucking book. And he likes people. He likes being around them. He’s not into nature or computers. He’s in his element in social gatherings, and he’s naturally very flirtatious, charming, and manipulative.
He also puts a lot of effort into controlling his emotions. It’s very hard to get him angry, but when he’s angry, he has a temper that’s violent and explosive. It's a dissociative state for him that he doesn't have much control over, so he tries his best to remain calm and avoid it and is generally very successful.
authors note: abuse, assault, and attempted murder
you grow up on a sioux reservation with your family. your whole family, and there’s a fuck ton of them— every few years your parents seem to pop out another kid they don't want to take care of. you’re old enough to have memories of your grandmother, a clear picture of the good days with just her and win, and you’re thankful for that. if it wasn’t for them, you probably would have turned into some kind of cynical asshole. well.. a worse one, anyway.
your fairly close to your sister, close enough that she comes to you to tell you when she has astrange out of body experience. you blame it on drugs (come on they’re all over the god damn place) but your mother pulls her aside and you wait by the door as they talk. it takes too long and you can’t hear much and when she comes back in you beg her to tell you. the second you touch her arm, she does. you probably should have realized it then but it’s another year before you know for sure why people always listened to you.
when you figure out what you can do, you use it to solve all your problems. your teacher takes your homework a week late, your mom buys you the new cassette tape you want, the cashier doesn’t check your id for that pack of cigarettes. you win awards like ‘best looking’ and ‘most likely to succeed’ in the year book despite the fact that you’re not a snobby stuck up shit like the rest of the kids at your school. people like you, or at least they think they do. and you love every second of it.
the only problem that you can’t solve with your silver tongue is your father. you try telling him he doesn’t want to hurt anyone (laughable, it doesn’t last five minutes). you try telling him he doesn’t want to hurt you (this one buys you a night, kota’s not so lucky). you try telling him he wants to hurt you, but not your younger brothers (that one has the most success, and he leaves the other three alone for a couple of weeks). sometimes you can change little things— convince him to punch you in the stomach instead of your already bruised arm. put him to sleep, if he’s been drinking enough— but your powers can’t turn people into someone that they’re not. and your father is not a good man.
eventually, you snap. you convince your brothers to stay in their room, watching some stupid movie with lots of naked girls to keep their attention, and you bring a kitchen knife to your father’s room. he stabs himself with it in the throat. ‘a suicide attempt’, you say casually when someone later asks what happened. the evidence points to nothing else. he lives, but requires an oxygen tank for the rest of his life.
the next day you move out of the house. you travel for a while, mostly partying and sleeping around but your record remains squeaky clean. win eventually talks you into going to college and you land a job at our lady of the lake. nobody really understands why you’re so good at the hospital— you have the bedside manner of a toad-- but when someone comes in in the middle of a complete breakdown and you tell them to ‘calm down and talk to me’ they listen. you have a tendency to get sent to the more difficult patients, the ones who refuse to speak, or eat, or who hurt themselves. and you enjoy the challenge of trying to fix people, even if you look at them more like playthings.
