OLIVER ROY HAILE
the basics
full name ♦ oliver roy haile nicknames ♦ ollie but he fucking hates that age ♦ twenty-four birthday ♦ june 2nd occupation ♦ police officer (juvenile services) school ♦ graduated from local public school species ♦ human ability/power ♦ none how the ability works ♦ n/a gender ♦ male, he/him sexuality ♦ tbd
the appearance
face claim ♦ devvon terrell height and weight ♦ 5'8 and 175 lbs identifying features ♦ left ear piercing , burn scars on his right hand overall appearance ♦ oliver’s on the shorter side but makes up for it with muscle. he has a kind of unique sense of style but puts effort into making sure he always looks clean and presentable. he keeps the sides of his hair cut neat and short while the top basically does whatever the fuck it wants. when off duty he dresses in what most people would say hasn’t been ‘in’ since the 90s— lots of bright neon colors and fun patterns.
the personality
likes ♦
- bright colors. meme brainwashed him to appreciate her sense of fashion from a young age. - working out. his body’s a temple and all that shit. - dancing. he’s got moves. - being outdoors. he’s a big fan of hiking and exploring. - comedy clubs. laughter is literally the best medicine.
dislikes ♦
- cats. especially the weird tortoiseshell one that keeps letting herself into his apartment. - horror movies. no sane person wants to spend time having the shit scared out of them, a'ight. - tea. it’s hot leaf water. that doesn't even sound good. - reading. english grammar is fucking weird. - drugs. nobody should be putting that shit in their bodies and it makes him mad it exists.
strengths ♦ oliver’s generally a really kind and considerate person who enjoys helping others. he’s really friendly and especially great at dealing with kids. he’s also a very hard worker.
weaknesses ♦ oliver’s default is to see the good in people, so he can be a little too trusting for his own good. he’s also pretty bad at handling large amounts of violence and gore, which with his job, can be kind of a drawback.
dreams ♦ he’d really like to promote farther in the department
fears ♦ hearing that something happened to his sister
overall personality ♦
if you asked other people to describe oliver’s personality you’d probably get answers like “the nicest person ever” and, while that’s obviously an exaggeration, its not without some valid support. he really is just an incredibly thoughtful, friendly person. he gets a lot of happiness out of making other people happy, and he enjoys being able to make a difference and help people in every day life. he’s typically in a good mood, very social, laid back, and always willing to try new things.
oliver can be firm and serious when necessary, but he’s not generally argumentative or confrontational. if he disagrees with something he’ll likely keep it to himself, and would never say anything bad about a person to their face (behind the safety of closed doors with his sister however, i make no promises). when he’s with someone he’s comfortable with, he can be louder, more obnoxious, and fun loving. otherwise he’s a little more reserved.
he’s a very hard worker and not one to ever ask for help. he’s also really understanding and good at putting himself in another person’s shoes. he’s good with kid’s who’ve been arrested because he’s willing to listen to them, and try to come up with solutions to their problems rather than just dismissing them or being aggressive. he really believes in treating people the way he wants to be treated and makes a point to be kind and respectful to everyone.
the history
father ♦ Hakim Haile, 49, Insurance Broker mother ♦ Lya Tsegwe, 47, Software Engineer siblings ♦ Aubrey Amelia Haile, sister, 19, Primrose important people ♦ n/a hometown ♦ Ethiopia, later Baton Rouge
overall history ♦
“oliver, take your sister and run.”
you do, fast as you can manage. you were nine when the massacre happened. not old enough to understand the political intricacies behind it, but old enough to get that you were in very real danger. you still remember that day with perfect clarity— the screaming, the explosions, the smell of smoke and the taste of blood in your mouth. it still wakes you up sometimes at night.
“we’re safe here. we don’t have to run anymore”
your head tilts in confusion at your mother's words, the night you make it to new orleans. by that point you had lived in three different countries. you were familiar with immigration offices and refugee camps. you were used to keeping all your things in a backpack by the door. the idea of staying somewhere, permanently staying somewhere, was almost a foreign concept to you. but your mother had been honest, and as time went on, you all started to build a life in your new house.
“can you run to the store after school? we both work late.”
your parents are busy most of the time, so a lot of responsibility falls on you. especially looking after your little sister. you don’t mind it, honestly, you get along well with meme, even if her favorite things to do are paint your nails and make you sit through tea parties with a dozen stuffed bears. she tells you you're her favorite person in the world (and you have blackmail you can hold over her for the rest of her life) so it's all worth it.
“you’re a pretty good runner. you ever think about trying out for track?”
you hadn’t been, not until until your p.e. teacher made the suggestion. you were never great at school, you found english complicated and math boring. if it weren’t for sports, you easily could have stopped showing up all together, and been one of those kids getting into trouble on the street. instead, you focused on training and competing, soccer games, and track meets.
“you're going to have to run faster than that, cadets.”
you pick up the pace, even though most of the group is behind you by that point. you decided that you wanted to be a police officer when you were young, the first time you had one of those ‘what do you want to be when you grow up’ essays. and you never changed your mind. you signed up as soon as you graduated, bright eyed and eager. it doesn’t take you long after starting the job to see the harder truths and more complicated aspects of being a cop in new orleans, but it only makes you more determined to do your job well.
“you’re not going to run away, are you?”
you rolled your eyes at your sister's sass, but you might have run, if you hadn’t been prepared for it. it felt like you were on some hidden camera the first time you watched meme turn into a cat. people didn’t do that. i mean, that really wasn't a thing that people did. but your shock subsided into curiosity and you helped her to test out the limits other newfound ability, and through some research, discovered a place where she could go to better explore it.
