Robert O'Reilly
the basics
full name ? Robert Michael Liam O'Reilly nicknames ? Robbie, Rob age ? twenty eight birthday ? July 21, 1990 occupation ? busboy at The Irish House school ? Graduate of UNO (University of New Orleans) species ? human ability/power ? medium how the ability works ? Robbie can see and speak to the dead, but the only issue is that they cause him severe headaches, almost migraines, if there are too many trying to communicate at once. If he speaks to one that isn't his dear grandma for too long, it can also cause him to be fatigued. Both can cause him to "shut down" or pass out if he expends himself too much, and if he passes out in the wrong place or among the wrong people, it could have bad consequences (especially in the Big Easy).
He's currently experimenting with letting spirits speak through him (channeling), but hasn't yet gotten comfortable with how it feels. As he states, "I can barely handle being myself most days, I don't want to share what little space I currently have in here", pointing to his head. gender ? male sexuality ? bisexual
the appearance
face claim ? robert sheehan height and weight ? 5'9", estimated to be around 150-160 lbs identifying features ? the occasional freckle or mole, but nothing too outstanding overall appearance ? For someone not from N'Awlins, he blends in quite well. Usually opting for jeans and a t-shirt or polo shirt most days, he'll toss his worn blue hoodie on and cover that with a black leather jacket for good measure to stave off the chill from the ocean winds. He always, always has his grandma's rosary on under his shirt for sentimental and personal reasons. His normal shoe styles are black sneakers for work (looks more professional, plus they're non-skid) but dark blue Vans otherwise. he's never one for formalities unless he's forced into it (which is rare), but he does have a dark blue/navy suit hiding in the back of his closet with a couple of white button-downs for anything that might unexpectedly come up.
He still has a boyish look about him, which wins over the older crowd who tips bigger, especially when he smiles, and it puts more money in the personal till, which he's grateful for. He will use it to his advantage, but chooses not to overuse it in case it loses its effect. His natural Irish accent is also a hit with patrons of The Irish House, who ask him to talk just to hear it (usually the younger women). His eyes, in thier darker shades, look to be olive green, but in the lighter shades can resemble a jade green. His dark brown hair lies against his head almost flat unless a stray wind or his hands go running through it to give it some body. His body is naturally tall and thin, but still athletically toned enough to not look like a pale stick.
the personality
likes ? Community coffee with extra strength Ibuprofen Beignets (fried dough balls/fritters with powdered sugar on top) Gumbo Helping others (a plus if they're dead) Video gaming Listening to music (sometimes it helps drown the voices out)
dislikes ? Migraines (which unfortunately happens a lot) New music (with the exception of a few bands) Airheaded women/girls Spoiled rotten children (especially when their parents do nothing about it) Know-it-alls Fake ghost hunting shows
strengths ? Having Grandma Fi at his side Able to read and speak the Irish language
weaknesses ? Still not 'up to par' on his ability (even with his practice, he still isn't strong enough to control the volume of the spirits in his head himself without passing out) Headaches/migraines (interferes with his daily life if they're strong enough to make him pass out or miss work) Can't control when/how/what spirits come to him, making others think he's lost his marbles
dreams ? Being accepted for who and what he is by his family Having a family of his own one day that he can pass his ability on to
fears ? His grandma leaving him to move on Complete and total bodily shut down due to his abilities
overall personality ? Rob is good people, quality people. He appreciates those who help him out when he's down and does his sincere best to repay the favor when he's able. It's what's made his ability so attractive in the first place (though some days he wishes he hadn't), being able to help those who are no longer able to help themselves without a human to speak for them. Though this goodness does have a limit and its drawbacks, such as being taken for granted and being used as a human wishing well or ATM, if he's financially able. This goodness will come back to haunt the ones who misuse it, since his arguing style has a tendency to bring up things that have annoyed or pissed him off for the past, oh, five to ten years? Owe him money? Believe me, he didn't forget.. he's just too nice and forgiving to bring it up.. until you make him mad. When he's truly angry, he'll start speaking in his native Irish language and at those times, even the spirits will avoid him.
He loves to chill when he's not working, opting to watch ghost hunting shows on tv (if he's not up to doing it himself) or play video games in an effort to ignore the spirits (only for a bit). He also listens to music while walking to work to avoid being pestered by spirits attached to buildings he passes on his path (personal favorites are Ghost, Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, and Shinedown).
the history
father ? Calum O'Reilly, 64, farmer/landowner mother ? Aileen O'Reilly [nee Callaghan], 53, housewife siblings ? Rory O'Reilly (older brother - 36), Calum O'Reilly (younger brother - 16) important people ? Fiona Donnelly [nee Callaghan], his maternal grandma hometown ? Destrehan, Louisiana; currently lives in NOLA overall history ? Robert, Robbie to most, was born in Destrehan, about a thirty minute drive from New Orleans. It's where his Irish ancestors had settled, and his own parents didn't want to deviate from tradition, much to his frustration as well as that of his older, then later younger brother. Just as his older brother Rory had been, he was raised in the normal manner of an Irish family, gaining his confirmation name (most would call this a baptism), Michael, at age ten. He grew close with his grandma Fi, who was considered by many to be crazy, but he learned her true nature - she was a calm, giving woman who could speak with the dead. She would learn what they needed to move on, whether it was just forgiveness, to send a message, or something else they had left unfinished, and help them achieve it so they could rest. He thought this was an awesome thing, to be able to help people even after they died, and wanted to know more about it. Unfortunately, since his grandma wasn't greatly recieved by the family due to this, they had to do it in secret, and through these talks during his visits to her house, around age 17, he found out he had the same ability. It thrilled Fiona to bits, of course, but he could never tell his parents or siblings unless he wanted to be alienated by the family as she had.
Since he was old enough to drive now, he visited her when he wanted, taking her advice on how to grow and hone his ability. He had gotten four years of training in when, while at college, he got the news that she had passed. He was devestated, of course, but instinctively knew what to do. When he had the chance, he went to her house and chose her favorite rosary to keep for his own, even though he had gotten one years ago as a boy. As he rolled the beads over in his fingers, he felt an energy that was familiar. Looking up, he saw his grandma smiling at him. She told him that his training was not yet done, and vowed to stay with him, attached to the rosary he had chosen, to protect him from those that would masquerade as spirits seeking help to gain his trust and energy. Once he'd graduated college, he moved to New Orleans permanently and currently holds down a job at The Irish House to fund his new life while ghost hunting in his free time to help those who otherwise wouldn't be able to help themselves.
