. . .
Mornings were always difficult for Lyric and lately things were no different. The weather was getting even warming outside, and while previous years this wasn’t too much of an issue, today it felt painful in her bones. She woke up next to the large bear that was wiggling his way back into her life, and she was happy about it. Lyric looked at the board shoulders and grinned mischievously when she saw the scratches on his back when he turned over in his sleep. She climbed out of the bed, grabbing some of the clothes that were still salvageable from the floor.
She pulled on her dress and shot a text to her little sister asking if she wanted to meet for some breakfast. She was in desperate need for an iced coffee and she wanted to talk to her sister about everything that was happening. They were close and she felt horrible for keeping so much of this from her sister. Lyric kissed Orion on the top of the head and left him a text that she would see him later.
Lyric shot another text to Nova that she would meet her at their favorite place and crossed the grounds and made her way to the small diner that reminded Lyric of the little ones that they would go to when they were in New York. Crossing the grounds and being careful to avoid Wren, and the judgemental stares of everyone who Lennox fuckface MacAlistair decided to text around the school. She missed spending time with the little hydro manipulator and she knew that they had a lot to catch up on.
She grabbed a seat next to the window and waited for her sister to join her.

Restless nights had become something of the norm for Nova Pennbrook. It was easy to be restless when your roommate wanted to spend all hours of the night aggressively playing… MMOs, she was pretty sure they were called. It was something that made her want to tear her hair out and a part of her had even considered a petition for a new roommate. The one thing that stopped her was the fact that Margrave was hot. It was impossible to deny the beauty of the dark haired girl with a smattering of freckles that decorated her nose. That was singlehandedly the thing that was keeping her right where she was, but that didn’t mean that the sleepless nights weren't going to eventually culminate to an extremely cranky water manipulator. If it weren't for the fat that Margrave’s ability was serious shit, Nova might have considered tossing water over her computer.
As it was, the youngest Pennbrook didn’t have a death wish just yet and so the electronics remained in tact. The text from her sister that morning was a welcome retreat from the room that felt as though it was becoming suffocating. A quick message back had Nova moving to get dressed, pulling on one of her favorite dresses and a pair of boots that were as easy to walk in as they were to kick ass and take names. Who said that looking good couldn’t also be practical? If they were going to be leaving the Academy, Nova wanted to ensure that she looked her best and that heads would turn when they saw her walking by.
Nova left the dorm without a word to her roommate; not that Margrave would have heard anything anyway based on the headset that she had glued to her ears. A soft hum escaped Nova as she made her way through the halls of Primrose before stepping out the front door and making her way across the street to the little diner that reminded both of the girls so much of their home in New York. It was a shame that they were stuck in Louisiana, but Nova supposed there were worse places that she could have been. As she spotted Lyric through the window of the diner, Nova grinned brightly at her sister and entered the building. ”Lyric~” Nova’s feet carried her quickly to the table her sister took before reaching over to embrace the other girl. ”How are you doing?”

. . .
Deep in her bones she felt the ache of the warmth of Louisiana. She tried to shake the worry from her core, but it didn't seem to want to go anywhere. She wore lighter clothes, she pinned her hair off the nape of her neck, anything to avoid overheating. As Lyric walked, she ran her tongue over her dry lower lip, having a strong flashback to the last time she ended up in the hospital with dehydration and hypothermia. The nurses and doctors all thought that she had been wandering through a desert for days or weeks, her parents were too afraid to tell them that she just ended up like this sometimes. They pumped her full of liquids and lowered her body temperature, but it wasn't until Primrose that she got the real help that she needed. She took a drink from the water bottle in her purse, hoping it would be enough to help just a little bit.
As much as she told her sister everything, she wasn't going to tell her this. Lyric stopped to apply some chapstick in an empty car window, helping with the flaking skin on her lower lip. She was going to handle this on her own, and she was going to keep Nova from being scared. She did everything that she could to protect the younger Pennbrook child and that wasn't about to change now. Nova meant the world to her and she wasn't going to worry her over something that might just correct itself. Lyric continued on to the diner, ready for some comforting food and presence. When they were living in New York, they had access to all of the best restaurants in the world and still, they would both want to go to this one place where they could just be comfortable and order fries and milkshakes.
She took a seat in the booth and watched the door for a familiar mop of red hair. When her sister finally showed up, she was out of her seat and embracing her baby sister. She hugged her tightly, feeling the warmth from the other body radiating off her. She let go of Nova and sat down across from her at the table, "You're looking beautiful as always." attempting to dodge the how are you doing question since she really didn't have an answer for that. "How are you?"

It was no surprise to anyone that the weather was getting warmer. The winter months were being left behind in favor of more humidity and more heat in general. For Nova, it wasn’t something that had ever really bothered her. While she felt the heat, it was just another way that she could lay out in the sun and get a tan - it was certainly going to be better than any sort of tan she could get living up north. The sun hit differently here than it did up there. The fact that they were closer to the equator was something that didn’t do any favors for those that were trying to escape the heat, but the gulf offered a way to cool down. It just meant that Nova was going to have to make a trip out that way soon; it might have even been a good opportunity for her to practice her ability.
But first, and most important, was some time to catch up with her older sister. The Pennbrook girls traveled in the same social circles so while their paths crossed frequently, they also had their own set of friends and their hobbies that they enjoyed. They didn’t need to spend every minute together to know that they were there for each other, no matter how much their parents had taught them that being selfish was the way to go. If Nova had been a different kind of person, she would have taken the behavior of her parents as the norm and kept Lyric away from her, but she wasn’t that person. Lyric had been the one to take care of her among the various nannies and there was nothing that the younger girl wouldn’t do for her older sister.
Bright eyes regarded her sister, unaware of whatever might have been plaguing her as they embraced. ”You’re ever the flatterer~ But thank you,” she said, reaching up to adjust her hair, letting her fingers comb through it as she took her seat. ”I’m exhausted, honestly. Millicent doesn’t seem to understand what a normal sleep schedule looks like,” she said, using her roommates first name instead of that which she had insisted everyone call her. As long as the other girl wasn’t physically in the vicinity, Nova saw no reason to respect her wishes. It wasn’t like she could offer up a power display - lord knew that was something that Nova was trying to avoid. ”She’s rather terrifying when things don’t go her way in her games.”
