ALEXANDER HUGHES
the basics
full name ♦ Alexander Barnaby Hughes
nicknames ♦ Alex
age ♦ Twenty seven
birthday ♦ 27/07/1991
occupation ♦ ICU nurse
school ♦ Primrose academy
species ♦ Human
ability/power ♦ Time manipulation
how the ability works ♦
Being able to manipulate time comes with its ups and downs; while he can not completely stop time, he can slow it down so much so that the universe around him almost stops moving completely. What would feel like one second to one person, would be an hour to him. During the time he has slowed time down, he, and anyone he is touching, are immune to the effects of it, however they must remain physically attached to him to the whole time. Having good discipline with this ability means he only ever uses it as necessary, usually at work if there is a patient who is about to crash on them, and he can't figure out why, and needs more time to work it out to save their life.
On the flip side, he can also speed time up; again, he is unable to keep up with it it and will be immune to the effects of it. If he has sped time up, even to make two seconds for everyone else only one for him, so in reality everyone else will see him sat in a chair for two seconds, rather than one second. It is ridiculously rare he ever uses this end of the ability; he sees no need for it whatsoever.
Controlling time itself doesn't take it out of him, but the effects of being 'awake' during the slowed down time do affect him massively. Should he slow time down for six hours to be almost non-existent, he will still feel the effects of being awake for six hours, whereas people around him would have only been 'awake' for six seconds. To prevent himself from being outed, he tries to limit himself to only slowing time down to a maximum of one hour at the most.
As previously mentioned, whenever Alex is using his ability, time affects his normally even if it is affecting literally the rest of the world; this means he ages as normal, too. To put this into context, if he put the world on 'hold' for ten years, everyone else would see him literally age ten years before their eyes, and if he sped the world up and left it sped up for years at a time, he would be seen to be stuck at the same age, in the same spot, for years.
Unfortunately for him, he isn't able to use his ability while he's sleeping to get himself more sleep or well rested. While he has no 'physical' effects from it, being 'awake' and in 'real time' while the rest of the world is slowed down does impact him as time normally would, so he may seem like he has 'suddenly dropped' in his energy. If he uses it multiple times during the day for an hour at a time, he would feel as if he has been awake for however many hours he has slowed it down; if he is working a 12 hour shift, and he uses it four times, he will be affected as if he has been working a 16 hour shift, while everyone else only feels the effects from a 12 hour.

sexuality ♦ homosexual
the appearance
face claim ♦ Alex pettyfer
height and weight ♦ 5'11'' / 117 lbs
identifying features ♦ he has a small scar on his right leg from an accident when he was at primrose; he fell down a set of stairs on the grounds and cut his pretty deep from the impact. the scar has faded mostly.
overall appearance ♦
standing at just under six foot, he's about average height for a male, and boasts a defined body with a frame to match. while he isn't the biggest man out there, he knows that he isn't bad looking, and has the confidence to match it. looking at him from afar people would probably notice his dirty blonde hair, which he often forgets to re-dye, so the brown comes through. there have been times he leaves it brown and just cuts the blonde out, or he dyes over the top of it. his eyes are more of a calm blue that a striking intimidating bright hue, which he uses to his advantage. when he is at home, he will be usually found in a t shirt, hoodie and joggers, but he knows how to dress to suit every occasion; he has a variety of shirts, suits, proper trousers, jeans, etc. his wardrobe also has a small selection of scrubs, one pair in each colour; blue, red, green, black, purple, and a Christmas patterned set.
to maintain his physique, he works out at the local gym two to three times a week, occasionally pushes himself to get an extra day in if he finds the time in the day, and he also goes swimming whenever he can.
the personality
likes ♦
being a workaholic means he will be picking up as many shifts as possible, even ones in other departments; he is very career driven and wants to gain as much experience as possible, including building up his transferrable skills.
music; getting lost in the magical world of lyrical genius is something that has always taken Alex by storm. if he has his headphones in, there's a high chance he will be uncontactable. music has such a way of moving him that he has been known to start crying while listening to songs which have strong emotional connection to him, usually if it comes with a memory, or if he is going through some stuff and it reminds him of it.
socialising; who doesn't? letting off some steam is great for anyone.
gin & tonic. self explanatory.
adrenaline rushes give him that vital burst of energy during a lot of fight or flight situations
horror films, they give him that little rush of adrenaline he sometimes needs
dislikes ♦
people who think they're something better than the rest really rub him up the wrong way; 'everyone is walking around with a bit of poo in them' has always been his mantra to ground himself, and others when they try to say they're better than anyone else.
discrimination really gets on his wick; if people can treat others like the dirt on their shoe, then they obviously have issues that they need to be sorting out.
losing patients.
his inability to show others when he is upset during upsetting situations; he finds it difficult to cry in front of others or show any emotion when it's bad news. he will usually just shut down and become numb until it sets in hours later when he is on his own. that is when he will break down in tears.
strengths ♦
his ability to rationalise situations, and think on his feet. not only has it got him through a lot of tough situations personally, professionally it has saved lives.
his ability to be a social chameleon; being able to adapt to any social situation means he has a wide variety of connections through life. one weekend he may be out partying with the party goers, another weekend he would be fine dining with some of the more elite members of society, and he fits in well in both situations.
looking at things from a logical point of view has helped him, and desensitised him to a lot of situations.
weaknesses ♦
while he is confident on the outside, he is rather paranoid that everyone is talking about him behind his back.
dreams ♦
to reach the top of his career ladder.
fears ♦ using his ability and becoming 'stuck'.
overall personality ♦
do no evil and harm none has been something Alex has attempting to go by for his whole entire life; he likes to think of himself as a relatively neutral person leaning more towards the 'good' side of life, but that's not to say that he doesn't completely snap at times. he has been known to throw his whole entire moral compass out of the window if someone has crossed him to the point of no return. that's only ever happened once. the idea of getting so angry that he couldn't even remember what he did or said scared him so much that he is still won't talk about it to anyone. knowing he had destroyed half of his flat in a blind fit of rage worried him; next time he could have done it to a person. being such a push over for the first 20 years of his life taught him how to grow a back bone, and stop dropping everything to help everyone else; he would usually put himself at a disadvantage to help others.
being so career driven has meant he had to make a lot of sacrifices to his own life; he doesn't get out to socialise as much as he would like, which in turn means he has less friends than the average 27 year old, but those that he does have are wolf pack tight to him; he would defend their honour with his life if it came to it. his career has propelled forward since he chose to specialise in critical care nursing; one of the toughest decisions he had made career based so far. his choices were between emergency nursing and critical care.
although he doesn't get much time to socialise, he can fit into any social situation. one of the skills he picked up over the years means he has a variety of acquaintances from all walks of life; he tries his best not to judge people, but will usually stand up for what's right and what's wrong.
as much as his foster parents gave him the perfect childhood, he has always said he would be the opposite of them personality wise; they were very judgemental people and would always look down on others who weren't as fortunate as themselves.

overall history ♦
[TW: PARENT DEATH]'adult cardiac arrest, delivery five'the words which will always shoot chills and adrenaline into any member of a hospital crash team; the only saving grace being that it wasn't 'adult and infant''. it still meant that some new born's mother's heart had stopped. a team consisting of doctors, nurses, anaesthatists, critical care specialists and a resuscitation specialist worked tirelessly in delivery for a solid 32 minutes on the 29 year old lady.
"we've been going for 32 minutes, we have no rosc, she's asystole, I would say we have done everything possible to help"the words from one of the doctors. a slow nod from everyone in the room before the next words that follows
'time of death, 19:54'; Mary-lou Hughes was no longer Mary-Lou Hughes, she was now just another body to be sent to the mortuary to find out the exact cause of death. Alexander was about to begin his life knowing he was orphaned. where was the father you may be asking; simple answer, one night stand and she never got his number, nor his name. unfortunately, Mary-lou had already been estranged from her parents some time before, she wouldn't even know how to contact them, or where they were even if she needed them.
Alexander was taken in at the age of three by a foster family in Brighton, they provided him with everything he could possibly want; he was living the most ideal childhood that any child could ask for. Unfortunately, there is no interesting story, up until his powers began to manifest at the age of 11. He would find himself watching people move in a hyper-slow motion for what felt like minutes, sometimes hours at a time. His foster parents told him to stop being stupid, and put it down to his imagination. They did not want to believe that there was something abnormal about their foster-child; as their denial increased, his powers began to spiral. Days he would be stuck in these 'trances', the worst were when he would be the one 'stuck' in slow motion compared to everyone else. He had sped time up. Everyone else was flying around at hyper speed around him, and he was stood there in 'real time'. It was finally time; he was thirteen. Primrose School in New Orleans were almost ready for him. They must've had some sort of link to know where people with gifts were, but of course, with everything, it came with a price. Alex's foster parents were prepared to pay anything to give him the quality of life he deserved, it wasn't like they couldn't afford it, either.
Moving when he was fourteen was daunting, he was about to say goodbye to the whole entire life he knew, about to say goodbye to everything that he held sacred and say goodbye to the only constant in his life, and about to be surrounded by a load of 'freaks'. Settling into this new school hadn't come easy for him; he didn't particularly find a fondness of it. The decor wasn't to his taste, the people seemed a bit snobby and up themselves, and all seemed to be living some lie that they were perfect. That was until he met his first love. His life was about to be turned upside down again. Being pretty certain he wasn't interested in love for the longest time, falling for someone of the same gender completely threw him off. For a the best part of two years, he battled his innerself, trying to figure out exactly what these feelings meant and why he was having them. He knew deep down it meant he was gay, but he didn't want to accept it initially.
Deciding to focus on his abilities and his studies, he looked at careers to try and distract himself from these 'teenage infatuations' and not allow his hormones to run wild inside him. Nursing seemed like a pretty good career choice, he wasn't intelligent enough to go into medicine, but he knew that nurses had a lot of input and were more there to run the show. That's what he wanted; as humble as he could be, he did like the idea of being seen to be doing the right thing. At the end of his time at Primrose, he had managed to eventually come out to those close and important to him; the majority of people had been absolutely fine with it, but there were a few people who never spoke to him again. Alex had, by that point, come to the attitude that if people wouldn't accept him for who he was, then they weren't worth his time, nor his effort.
Graduating from Primrose gave him the opportunity to go back to the UK to go to university. The only issue being that in the UK, people go to university at the age of 18; he was classed as a mature student, which meant he had a much deeper and more gruelling application process to go through. More questions, more digging, all of which he managed to bull his way through without giving too much away. His first term began, and he was moved into his new home in Southampton city centre, ready to smash this way through his nursing degree. Little did he know, he was about to be surrounded by some of the most party-like people the city had ever met. Lack of sleep, lack of time to study and...wait, time? Of course, that was all he needed. During the next few years, he abused his powers to give him more time to study, and even used them to give him more time to sleep. Who said burning the candle at both ends was impossible?
After graduation he managed to snag himself a job at the local hospital on a trauma ward, he knew it would be a stop gap; he felt most settled in emergency medicine and in critical care. It was only a few months before he found the opportunity, and where else but back in New Orleans! Within weeks he had handed his notice in, hopped on a plane and made his way back to New Orleans, setting back in as if he never left, except this time he was now a registered nurse working on the critical care department. After a year, he decided it was time to specialise, which meant doing a part time college course along side working; the hours he had to put in were ridiculous and he wasn't quite sure if he would even be able to pull it off. After another gruelling year, he managed to get qualified as a critical care specialist, fully aware the role would be constantly developing and he would always be needing to go to updates, and do more research, but it definitely opened up his salary potential, and it opened up his networking potential.
That brings us to today, where he is at work, probably making himself a coffee during his break so he doesn't find himself falling asleep.
