It wasn't Cameron's fault that his birthday was on like the number one day of the year to party. And it wasn't his fault that Jaxon happened to share a birthday with him. And it certainly wasn't his fault that he was thirsty and out of Dr. Pepper. A lot of factors led up to this event, a perfectly appropriate response to the craving for the tasty carbonated beverage.
Alcohol played a small role. Cam was having a good time and despite the fact that his birthday had been four days ago, he and Jax were still on top of the world. They'd gone to hang out around New Orleans one night, having grown fond of each other pretty quickly. Cameron had had four beers and three shots of vodka... which wouldn't even be that much except like he was also high as fuck. Fortunately it wasn't on anything serious, but weed and life... he was high on those.
"Hey," he addressed Jaxon, dangling his legs off of an emergency exit staircase in an alley where they sat. "You think we could steal from that bar?" he asked, pointing toward the brightly lit window across the street.
For the record, Cam didn't want to do it to inconvenience anyone, or to hurt anyone or make anyone suffer in general. He wanted to do it because it'd be fun. And because he was high. But it'd be fun, he knew it.
It wasn't often that he felt so relaxed, that he wasn't tense in his fists and shoulders. The cocktail of stress-relief running through his veins gave him a rare sense of well-being. It made him feel like, for a moment, he wasn't the biggest screw-up in all the land.
"Just... see if we could pull it off?" he added, rubbing the back of his neck. "Can you run... like... fast?"
Twenty three and he was drunk for the first time in his life. Drunk off his ass and bustling with loud music and various stages of drunk all around him. He spent the morning with Aisling, they had stayed in bed late. Made breakfast together, spent the morning in that bubble of new love. The evening was spent with his birthday bro, Cam Gallagher. They shared a birthday, and they shared very different (but still very valid) love for Aisling Donoghue.
They promised the nightmare haunter that they would take it easy. It was a bad promise to make because Jaxon lost count of his shots, his beers, and was currently smoking weed for the first time. It was promising to be quite the night and he knew that Aisling was going to kill them both for it.
Jaxon used the lighter to light the end of the rolled joint and took in a deep breath, he had seen it done enough times growing up to be fairly familiar with the process. It was the sharp burn in his lungs that he was not expecting. He took in a chest full of smoke, and then proceeded to cough to try to expel as much of it as possible. His head went light and he banged his fist on his chest to help with the process. He was going to kill Cam for this, but still took another drag before passing it over to the skinwalker.
He looked over at the Dr. Pepper soda case that Cam was pointing out and felt a grin pull at his features. "Thought you were trying to avoid my life of crime, Gallagher." He teased, taking a drink from the beer bottle he got from the last bar they were at. They were already pretty fucked up, and there was something about the overly sweet Dr. Pepper that just sounded so good.
"Probably a little faster if someone hadn't suggested shots." He admitted, looking across the road to see who would try to keep them from their desired soda goodness. "Can you run fast?"

Somewhere in the back of Cameron's intoxicated mind, he knew that Ais was going to kill them. But it was so far back that the his fear of her reaction to this night was not strong enough to have any effect on his already corrupted decision making. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he knew that he was fucked.
Right now, he didn't feel fucked, though. Right now, he felt relaxed and excited and motivated. And thirsty.
"You good? It gets easier," he offered his friend as he coughed, remembering the first time he'd smoked anything. He'd wondered why people did it at all-- it didn't feel good. Still, something led him to doing it again and soon everything was much clearer. "Thanks," he said, taking the blunt.
"I'm avoiding getting caught," Cameron defended with a smirk. "Being a criminal is fine." Being disciplined like one... that was what Cam had a problem with. But it was fine. Do the crime and don't get caught, right? That was all they needed to do.
"Does that mean you're considering it?" he asked... because he wasn't about to do this alone... not if it would ruin Jaxon's night. If Jax wasn't interested, he wouldn't push.
He laughed when Jax pointed out that shots may have had a negative effect on their ability to run. "It wasn't that many," he defended with the wave of a hand. "I'm pretty fast," he admitted. "I ran track in high school... when I decided to show up." Which, granted, wasn't often... so he'd been kicked off the team pretty quickly but like he'd still been good at it for a brief period of time in his life. "I wouldn't leave you behind, though." So it was important that they both had the ability to get out of there when they needed to. Cameron would get arrested in a heartbeat before leaving Jaxon to take the blame on his own.
His lungs felt like they were on fire, but his head was starting to feel like a balloon. It was a fun feeling and he finally could understand the appeal. Alcohol was easier to understand. He enjoyed the burn and the way it made the world finally spin into place. He knew that this wasn't going to be an always thing, but it was their birthday! They could celebrate a little. How often were people born on the same day and then friends? He was sure fairly often, but it felt like fate.
"Yeah, what kind of a pyro would I be if I didn't enjoy burning sensations everywhere." he joked, watching the people moving in and out of the bar holding the grand and beautiful Dr Pepper machine from them. They had money, that wasn't the point.
Jaxon washed down the taste in his mouth with the beer next to him and leaned against the cold metal of the fire escape in the dark alley. "I avoided getting caught three times. It's the fourth that gets ya." He laughed and drained the bottle, dropping it into the dark alley below them. "But let's all be honest, I would have kept going if I didn't get caught, and I want a Dr Pepper." He shot Cam a mischievous grin
"What are you thinking? Distraction and then run?" He asked, he had spent a lot of time in juvie with other kids who had done some pretty messed up things. His record of burning down four houses helped him get some space from the troublemakers, but the kids that were in there weren't exactly there because they were model citizens.

Cameron laughed. "You're right. Stupid question." He did keep an eye on his friend, ready to perform CPR if necessary. Well, more accurately, he wasn't ready at all but he was going to remain attentive.
"You think we can do it... without getting caught?" he asked curiously, just about prepared to go through with it either way but wanting to know how it would end ahead of time so he could prepare speech in his defense for Malcolm when he killed him.
"Right? Same," he pointed out, imagining a Dr. Pepper in his hand... the cool, wonderful liquid trickling down his throat.
He nodded as Jaxon suggested a distraction. "Yea, that's what I was thinking," he pointed out. "You think you could handle a distraction?" he asked... because... fire was a good way to distract people. Of course, Cam didn't want them to do a ton of damage or to hurt anyone. He just wanted a distraction.
"Perfect," he confirmed with a smirk, hopping to the ground and getting a closer look at the bar. "Ready?" he asked, turning to him. "If anything happens, you run. Get out of here," Cam instructed. If it came down to it, he'd have been more than willing to take the blame for everything if he got caught.
Crossing the street, he stood at the window for a few moments, trying to get a good look at a staff member. Unfortunately, he couldn't get a clear enough view. "I'll be right back," he assured, walking around until he got a clear view of a bartender. As soon as he did, he turned toward a wall. When he turned back around, his face was no longer his own. Promptly returning to Jaxon, he spotted their target behind the counter.
Jaxon laughed and though about how good the Dr. Pepper was going to taste. He could just imagine how tasty it would be and how much fun it was going to be to get one. What was the worst that was going to happen? What could happen? They were superpowered and it was their birthday bad things couldn't happen.
"We absolutely can." He stood up, knowing that distraction was his middle name. Actually it was Kane, but he never identified with the brother killer name sake, but he sure did with sugar Kane, which was more of a reason to go after the Dr Pepper. It was his name sake and it was his birthday. This was a present to both of them from the sugar Kanes. Yeah he was probably high.
"Trashcan fire and then we get the fridge and we run." cause just one or two Dr Peppers was not going to be enough. They were both thirsty and they were both ready for that sugary sweetness. They both needed to get the fridge.
"And if it has wheels, we will never be caught. We just ride it to the sunrise."
Just a trashcan fire. He walked with Cam, trying to spy the best trashcan for such a fire. He nodded when Cam said to get out of there. "I'll be right beside you, Cam." He promised, knowing that Cam has just as much to lose if they got caught. Luckily for them, it was a foolproof plan with no chance of anything bad happening.
Jaxon spotted a trashcan outside and saw that it was filled with the papers from that day, he gripped it tightly and with a SCREEEEEECH he dragged the trashcan into the store with the Dr Pepper. He presented the can to the owner who was already yelling for Jaxon to get out of there.
Just according to plan.
He waved his hands over the trashcan, shouting out some made up incantation spell and cackled manically as the trashcan erupted in flames. "I am the fire king of New Orleans!" He was so good at distractions

Trashcan fire, they get the fridge, and they run. It sounded simple enough. No one was going to get hurt, so he didn't really see what the big deal was.
Cameron laughed at the mental image of the two of them, speeding down the street hanging on the back of a wheeled refrigerator. "That'd be sick, " He acknowledged, though for the sake of avoiding disappointment he was keeping his hopes low in regard to the fridge having wheels on it. He'd never seen one with wheels on it. It was a good idea, though. They were so heavy-- why didn't they have wheels?
Maybe because a lack of wheels made it more difficult for people to steal them.
Jaxon promised not to leave Cam behind and he grinned slightly, nodding. "Thanks." He wouldn't have minded in the least bit... taking the blame for Jaxon. Taking the brunt of the punishment. But knowing that Jaxon was willing to stick by him despite the risk... he appreciated it. A lot. There were few people Cameron trusted, but Jaxon was swiftly moving up the ladder.
And then, they were doing it. It was happening.
No turning back.
Jaxon's job was to create a distraction, and frankly, Cam couldn't think of a single scene that would attract more attention than the display of maniacal fire priestess Melisandre-esque banter that came from Jaxon's mouth.
"Okay, that's one way to do it," he thought silently as he made his way behind the counter.
Okay. He was standing in front of the fridge. The target was in sight. And... he hadn't really worked out any more steps from that point. Sober Cameron would have thought, for just a moment, that this wasn't smart.
Current Cameron wasn't sober, and so doubt never crossed his mind.
He approached the fridge, placing his hands on either side and slowly lifting it off the floor. It was heavy, but not impossible for one scrawny man to lift.
The fridge was in his hands. The next step? He didn't know. Again, he hadn't really gotten this far in his head.
Run.
Or... not quite. Running was a bit awkward while he was holding the bulky object. He tried to run, but the motion appeared to more closely resemble a saunter, despite his efforts.
He made his way out a back door, turning to look over his shoulder for an update on the status of Jaxon's newly acquired tyranny.
Could they have ridden the fridge into the sunrise? Maybe. Probably not. The faint wail of sirens approaching the bar led Cameron's foggy mind to believe that they weren't about to find out how far they could go. Jaxon Kane Davies
Trashcan fire. Cam gets the fridge. Ride off into the sunset sipping the sweet nectar of the gods. The plan was so simple, how could it not work out perfectly?
"Imagine, we keep the fridge and we take like a lawnmower engine. We never have to be without Dr Pepper again." He was getting many ideas and they were all perfect and he loved them all. He couldn't want to get the Dr Peppers and this was clearly the only one to ensure that they both had enough to get them through the night. The night that would never end, because Jaxon was starting to get a sneaking suspicion that they were going to feel like this for the rest of their lives. He would have to take the mantel of Fire King of New Orleans, it was a big responsibility, but with his Face Changing Cohort, they would be okay. The kingdom would be okay.
Fire King of New Orleans. He would wear the crown with pride and he would show the kingdom of New Orleans how a benevolent king ruled. He would show Aisling his kingdom and he would be the best boyfriend in the world. Would Aisling be mad if she didn't get a Dr Pepper? Jaxon made a mental note to make sure she got a Dr Pepper.
The trashcan was heavier than he thought, and the knew that he was going to be so good at this.
Jaxon cackled when the fire lapped at the various fast food wrappers and newspapers, why was the owner on the phone? Why wasn't he distracted by the fire display?
"Hey! I am the Fire King! I royally command you to get off the phone and pay attention!" He shouted, keeping an eye on Cam's penguin waddle with the mini fridge that they came for. It was a perfect plan. They were going to be drinking Dr Pepper in no time.
The sirens cut through the fog of his brain and Jaxon left them to deal with the fire in the trashcan and rushed through to help Cam carry the fridge. Two of them would make it much much faster.
"You unplugged this, right?" He asked, taking one side of it from Cam so they would be able to go faster.

A lawnmower engine on a refrigerator. Cameron laughed, shaking his head. "Dude, that would be a serious abuse of my godlike skill of mechanics." He was actually positive he could do that, but it would be completely ridiculous. Then again, did he have any place to judge what was too ridiculous at the moment?
Not particularly.
They had created chaos. Papers were flying, people were erupting in laughter and startled screams. It was surreal, everything in slow motion. That part... it was probably the weed. But it made the whole situation that much more dramatic, like they were the secret agents in a movie. The protagonists, even.
Jaxon was a good friend. He did what he could to keep attention off of Cam as long as he could before coming to offer assistance. "Yup, all unplugged," he assured, moving over to make more space when Jaxon went to grab the other side. With the young man's help, he lifted the fridge with ease.
Of course, that didn't take away from the size and awkwardness of the fridge. It wasn't something very easy to make off with. It was clearly full, the clanging of bottles sounding faintly beneath the approaching sirens.
Cam nodded his head to the side, indicating which direction they should move in before beginning their escape. The first sirens belonged to firetrucks, and so it appeared that they were off the hook as extinguishing the flames was a priority to the firemen rushing in. The following sirens, though-- those were for them. And as the law enforcement vehicles came to a stop, it took all of Cameron's willpower not to get himself out-- not to disappear and assume an unlucky victim's identity for the duration of the arrest. Jaxon couldn't change his face, so Cam wouldn't either.
"Come on," he muttered as the flashing red and blue lights blinded him.
Officers stood before them rather quickly, the fridge acting as a small indicator that they were the culprits of the madness surrounding them.
A man asked them what they were doing with the refrigerator.
Summer time was going to get amazing, all they had to do was steal a lawnmower from somewhere, they could attach it to a fridge, and just ride around with the most amount of Dr Pepper. "You're a mechanic!" Jaxon said excited, remembering a very core fact about Cam in that moment. "I think it would be worth the abuse and we would have a Dr Pepper mobile. We just need the fridge, your skills, and an engine. Three things to victory."
Victory would be theirs and nothing could stop them.
Fire, papers, yelling and chaos, and the Fire King was right in the center of it. He loved it. He felt light and free for the first time in his life. He wasn't getting punched in the face or staying up for days on end to make sure his siblings were okay, he never got to feel like a real person. A person who was allowed to make mistakes and feel free and light.
Taking half of the mini fridge, they were able to move much faster. Nothing like a first heist to solidify a friendship. They were made roommates and while Jaxon was unsure about how they were going to work, but here they were. Deviant little penguins walking away with glory and high fructose corn syrup.
"Smooth sailing now." He could practically taste the Dr Pepper and nothing would taste quite like freedom. He thought that he heard some sirens in the background, but it was the French Quarter, there was so much going on there. There was no way it was for them.
The fire engines were clearly not for them. There were plenty of fires all around them. Plenty of crime, and he gave a very direct order as the Fire King. There is no way that it was for them. When the cars stopped in front of them, it was like a slap in the face. They were here to stop them? They were just trying to get Dr Pepper, how rude were they? Jaxon held the fridge, unsure why they were trying to ruin a perfect night for their birthday. Cam could easily leave, but the fact he was still standing there with the fridge spoke more than anything. They were going down together, and hopefully that would divide Aisling's eventual anger between the two of them instead of all of it at one of them. That was how it worked, right?
Moving it was taken, and Jaxon felt compelled to answer as well,
"Nice night out, we thought um it could use a walk?" He said, a laugh bubbling in his throat. Fuck this weed was good and he was going to have to have a long talk with Cam about not mixing weed and alcohol again.

You're a mechanic! Cameron laughed, nodding. "I'd forgotten," he joked sarcastically. He was only good at a few things so it was an important thing to remember about him. "And a trailer," he added with amusement. Because the thought of the two of them crouched on a mini-fridge put images in his head that he didn't want to make come true. Them stumbling, falling off, having to run to catch back up because the fridge top only seated one ass at a time.
He was thinking way too much about this.
"Thanks, man," he said as Jaxon took some of the weight.
The sirens and lights were becoming overstimulating. Focus. He repeated it over and over in his head. You're taking this soda. You're with Jaxon. You don't want him to get caught.
Unfortunately, he wasn't going to get what he wanted. Fortunately, he was used to that.
Laughter bubbled out of Cam's throat before he made the decision to laugh. They were walking the fridge. That was what they were doing.
"Is something funny?"
A little. But that wasn't what the man wanted to hear. "No, sir," he said, more laughter betraying him.
"Put the refrigerator down."
"I was trying to take it," he said, starting to set it down. "This guy was trying to stop me," he said, his thumb gesturing toward Jaxon.
Maybe it'd have been more convincing if he hadn't had that shit-eating grin on his face.
"I did forget, now I feel less bad." Jaxon said, feeling relieved that Cam forgot his professional as well. He wasn't sure how he was going to feel about getting high again, but he was happy to spend more time with his birthday partner in crime. He didn't think a literal crime would be committed, but there they were.
The shouting from the bar, the roaring trash can fire. He really was enjoying that right when they would extinguish the fire, Jaxon would just focus his hazy mind and reignite the trash can like those asshole candles that he would see on TV.
"Gotta be quicker than that." too The sirens, the lights, the shouting for them to stop. It was too funny for his chemically induced brain to function. No matter what, he knew that he wasn't going to allow Cam to take all of the blame for this.
The police officer stood in front of them, Cam insisting that nothing was funny but his laughter gave it away. His laughter was really funny, so Jaxon was laughing too. "Jokes are funny. And your mustache is funny. Oh." Jaxon looked at Cam and then back to the officer, "We're so rude! Are you thirsty?" He tried to balance his half of the fridge in one arm to open one of the doors of the fridge, when that didn't work he held it with two hands again and nodded down to the fridge, "Help yourself."
Jaxon looked at Cam with bewilderment and was shocked that he was trying to take full credit for their heist. "Sir, sir. He is delusional with a fever. He's been bit by a radioactive spider. Or something. He was trying to stop me."
Next thing he knew, the fridge was knocked over, Dr Peppers were flung about and he was handcuffed on the ground. "Happy Birthday, Cam!"

His life was over. Somewhere through the fog in his mind he knew that he'd messed up. Even worse, he'd dragged Jaxon into trouble. That was the part he regretted most.
Getting arrested was always a pain in the ass. He was accustomed to the process, far more than he cared to admit, and it always produced this feeling of shame and guilt and self-disgust that took weeks to shake.
Even so, he'd wished he could have gotten Jax out of it. He should have known his roommate wouldn't have let him taken all the blame. Jaxon was too nice, too selfless to allow him to do that. Still, he would keep trying every chance that he got to carry the full burden of responsibility.
Of course, ideally, there would not be another opportunity offered by an arrest because there would not be another arrest.
Cameron was not so sure that there wouldn't be, but he could dream.
Anyway, Jaxon took the heat and Cam sighed, smirking slightly when Jaxon wished him a happy birthday.
"You too, dude."
He'd have given the guy a fist bump if his hands weren't restrained.
