the basics
full name ♦ Eleanor Catherine Lovelle nicknames ♦ Nellie age ♦ 16 birthday ♦ May 5th, 2002 occupation ♦ Intern at In the NOLA school ♦ Phalanx species ♦ Human ability/power ♦ Shadow Manipulation how the ability works ♦ Nellie has the ability to shape and manipulate darkness and shadows. In a sense, she is basically channeling dark energy, which allows her to control and manipulate the things that exist in the darkness. Harnessing the energy is difficult and requires an amount of concentration, but through it she is able to create areas of complete darkness and is starting to learn how to move herself through them, which includes being able to ‘hide’ within plain sight. When shadows are present, Nellie is able to draw figures forth from them, though they are largely harmless and offer more of a ‘fear factor’ than anything else. Her ability is controlled largely through her hands, with tendrils of shadow emanating from her fingers that spread outward as well as climbing up her arms and eventually covering her body.
Unfortunately, in order to utilize some of these darker parts of her ability, Nellie is forced to access a darker part of herself that she does her best to keep hidden away from those who care about her. The more time that she spends under the influence of her ability, the more Nellie almost becomes out of touch with reality and with who she really is. Personality changes are not uncommon because of how she is required to use some parts of her ability - especially when she doesn’t have enough control over it to always choose which pieces of her ability she wants to use. Extended periods of time accessing the darker aspects of her personality can leave her ‘stuck’ as someone that she doesn’t actually want to be. In addition to this, Nellie suffers from severe photosensitive migraines that leave her debilitated. Nausea and vomiting are unfortunate side effects to which darkness is the only cure.
gender ♦ Female sexuality ♦ Pansexual
the appearance
face claim ♦ Pyper America Smith height and weight ♦ 5’7 & 116 identifying features ♦ Wide eyes and a smattering of freckles on her face. overall appearance ♦ Nellie stands at a height of 5’7 and is slender in body, but lanky in the limbs. Wide, blue eyes that seem to be too large for her face are almost a family trait at this point, but they make her stand out in a crowded room. Her face is covered by a smattering of angel kisses, though they have been known to be concealed beneath a face that has been well put together. Nellie prefers to wear clothing that is a little more girly in fashion, though she has been known to swap with her twin from time to time, whether to try something new or just confuse the people around them.
the personality
likes ♦ Overcast days Splashing in puddles Her family Flowers Iced coffee Photography Starry nights Spicy food
dislikes ♦ Bright days Being angry Her ability Losing control Stereotypes Not having her sunglasses Rushing
dreams ♦ Nellie wants to get control over her ability without having to deal with the shift in her personality whenever she channels it. fears ♦ Her greatest fear is doing harm to her family because of her ability.
overall personality ♦ Eleanor is someone who cares an awful lot for the people that she surrounds herself with and her family is at the top of the list. There is nothing that she wouldn’t do to if her family asked it of her. Nellie is someone who goes above and beyond for the people she cares about, as well as her own personal goals. Despite being born to a doting family, she has a strong work ethic and is often up late at night in order to try to make the most of the time that she has. Nellie hauls her own weight in any group situation that she is thrown into and isn’t afraid to call people out when they don’t do their part. She has the determination necessary to try and finish whatever she sets her mind to, but doesn’t always manage to complete those goals, especially the more unrealistic ones. There are times when she forgets to take care of herself, but having a large family has helped with that tremendously. When Nellie becomes more neglectful of herself, it is not uncommon for her ability to manifest in a destructive or otherwise unpredictable fashion.
Nellie’s ability is something that requires her to tap into parts of herself that she keeps hidden. These are the bits of her personality that consider otherwise inconceivable things - chaos, despair, death. The things that she might imagine, but never vocalize. However, excess time spent accessing her ability, dependent on which part of it she is using, can cause a personality shift from who she actually is. Nellie can become distant and cold, perhaps even extending towards the boundary of downright cruel because of the amount of darkness that she has to channel. While this isn’t something that lasts and she reverts back to who she actually is with enough time coming down from her ability, it does have a lasting effect on the people around her as well as her own mindset.
the history
father ♦ Neville Lovelle, 46, high school teacher mother ♦ Hannah Lovelle, 44, baker siblings ♦ Teddy Lane Lovelle , 20, intern at In the NOLA @lucia , 18, Monroeville patient Prudence Victoria Lovelle , 16, clerk at Agard Auto Robbie Jude Lovelle , 15, barista at Quarter Café important people ♦ N/A hometown ♦ Augusta, Maine overall history ♦ Eleanor was the fourth born to Neville and Hannah Lovelle, born only minutes after her twin sister, Prudence. Life was easy for the twins, born into a family filled with love. Just one year after the twins were born, the Lovelle family was completed with the birth of their youngest - Robbie Jude. Due to Neville and Hannah’s love for the Beatles, all of their children were christened with names taking after songs and albums by the band they deemed as their favorite. The love of the band was something that the Lovelle’s tried to pass on to their children and, where Eleanor was concerned, there was marginal success. She didn’t share her parents’ devotion to the band, but she enjoyed listening to them nonetheless.
Life as a Lovelle child was simple; they looked out for one another, they picked on one another, and ultimately they confided in one another. Eleanor - who insisted on being called Nellie - had a close bond with each of her family members, but none was closer than that which she shared with Prue. The twins were peas in a pod, seeking solace in one another in the chaos of the world. They were ten when their oldest brother, Teddy, was first sent away. He wasn’t like the rest of the kids at his school and it had apparently been enough of a reason for him to be removed from the immediate picture. They still talked to him and wrote to him, but they didn’t see him much. They grew closer to Lucy in that time, and Jude too. There was a fear in Nellie about losing the rest of her siblings and that fear would be realized shortly after the twins turned twelve.
They were playing street hocky on their road, careful to avoid the cars whenever they came by. Hours had gone by, but the teenagers were enjoying themselves, having more fun than what it seemed like they had actually had since Teddy left them. It all came crashing down around them when Lucy suddenly began to drift away from them. Nellie called out to her, but she ignored the pleas for their sister to come back. The twins both followed after her, attempting to pull their older sister back to safety. They turned to get help when suddenly tires were screeching and a resonating THUD cracked through the air.
Lucy had been hit.
Fear filled the Lovelle family as they waited for Lucy awoke after the accident. Relief didn’t seem like a strong enough emotion to course through their veins, but that feeling was short-lived when it was announced that Lucy would be going Monroeville Hospital. It was a place that claimed they would be able to help her, to allow her to gain control of her visions so that something like this didn’t happen. It was heartbreaking having to say goodbye to another sibling, but they promised to keep in touch - though that didn’t happen nearly as often as it should have. Whenever the Lovelle’s would send something to Lucy, the twins always included something that spoke of how much they missed their sister. They didn’t hear from her as often as they heard from Teddy, which concerned Nellie.
Nellie’s bond with Prue solidified and grew with Jude. He was younger than they were by only a year, but in the wake of tragedy, they came together. As the months went by, the family settled into a new routine, keeping in contact with Lucy as much as they possibly could. It wasn’t until shortly after the twins’ thirteenth birthday that their world would once again be flipped around. The two girls had been on their way home from one of Prue’s practice matches; the rest of the family hadn’t joined them on that day, but Nellie was determined not to miss something that was so important to her sister, even if it meant that it took time away from her own social circle. Walking home around dusk was nothing new for them, but they always felt safe because they had each other and, until that point, they had been left alone. However, someone approaching them left them unsettled and their pace quickened in order to get home faster. Fear coursed through Nellie’s veins as she reached for her sister.
Their hands gripped together and suddenly the energy around them sizzled, light exploding from every direction before darkness descended around them.
In a single moment, both of the twins developed their ability, but they still had to get home. Navigating the sudden darkness seemed to be effortless for Nellie and she pulled her sister along with her until the regular glow of the evening returned and they were standing in front of their house. Explaining to Hannah and Neville what had happened was difficult and exciting - though they had more questions about the person that had potentially been intending to harm their daughters. Nellie could remember no details, though. There was nothing after the shadows surrounded them.
Like their elder brother before them, the Lovelle twins were sent down to Phalanx, where they would join others like them who had abilities that needed to be controlled in a beneficial way. Being reunited with Teddy was a relief, but being stripped from Jude was painful. He was only twelve and there was no telling when his ability would manifest - and no one wanted to think that it was possible that he would end up without one. The next few years saw Nellie harnessing her ability, attempting to use it for pranks or just to practice, but there were noticeable changes when she attempted some of the more challenging tasks such as traveling through the shadows. Her personality shifted every now and then and while most might have put it down to teenager hormones, Nellie knew it to be something different.
Jude has finally joined Teddy and the twins at Phalanx and the family is nearly whole. Nellie still isn’t satisfied with Lucy’s absence from their lives, though and no amount of waiting will placate her inquisitive heart.
