Prudence Victoria Lovelle
the basics
full name ♦ Prudence Victoria Lovelle nicknames ♦ Prue age ♦ seventeen birthday ♦ May 5th, 2002 occupation ♦ student, clerk at Agard Auto school ♦ Phalanx species ♦ human ability/power ♦ light manipulation how the ability works ♦ Prudence can create light from her hands. Sometimes, she feels like little more than a flashlight, but she has shown that, with concentration, she can form a ball of light that she can manipulate. She can conjure tennis-ball-sized balls of light that she can manipulate. She has experimented with throwing them, but they seem to fizzle out not far from her hand. This process expends more energy and focus than the fast-paced girl can usually squeeze out of herself, but there is potential for growth there. With devotion, the orbs can grow in brightness and size, and she wants to work on improving their solidity.
Another unfortunate aspect of her power are uncontrolled bursts, or flashes, of power when she gets cornered or too upset too quickly. Though rare, this glowworm ability can be quite annoying, as it pops up when she feels that she needs it the least. Most of the time, it is one or two flashes, of quick duration and in quick succession, like the pop of a camera flash. These seem to radiate from all over her, and they are part of the reason she is convinced that she can glow from all over, at different brightnesses. She seems to think this is possible, with enough work, but for obvious reasons, it is hard to work on.
An unfortunate side-effect of her power is night-blindness and over-reliance on light. Mostly, this renders itself as Prudence requiring higher amounts of light than usual to see in detail. She prefers her electronics at maximum brightness and her nights completely dark. At night/in low light situations, Prudence’s eyes will focus on the light source rather than objects, rendering her night-blind. As she struggles to see in everyday situations, Prue fears that it may get worse, culminating in her losing her sight completely. gender ♦ female, she/her sexuality ♦ unknown
the appearance
face claim ♦ Pyper America Smith height and weight ♦ 5'8" and 119 lbs identifying features ♦ her eyes stand out a lot overall appearance ♦ At four inches shy of six feet and 119 pounds, Prue is all lank, with lean muscle. She is mostly elbows and knees, with a lot of knob to her. Thin, lean muscle cords her frame, but she has an almost waifish look to her. A thin, pale face drawn narrow and sharp supports her large, wide eyes. They are a bright blue that attract light easily, and she sometimes accentuates this to highlight their unnerving nature, if she ever gets the urge. Prue dresses comfortably and with pretty much anything she can swipe off the bedroom floor that’s clean. She can dress up if need really be, but she often prefers to wear things like t-shirts, shorts, and jeans. It is not unusual for her to show up to class looking like she just rolled out of bed.
the personality
likes ♦ softball, skateboarding, her family, getting outside, dislikes ♦ being confused for her twin, sitting still for too long, introspection, being disagreed with, complete darkness strengths ♦ athletic, graceful, very determined weaknesses ♦ impulsive, brash, loud, has a potty mouth dreams ♦ to have complete control of her powers, to have her family all in one place fears ♦ seeing more of her family separated from her, losing her sight overall personality ♦
Prudence was blessed with many things, but somehow, actual prudence was not among them. The girl is rather impulsive and rarely takes a second to think things all the way through. She leaps before she looks, and that is how she prefers things. She can easily overextend or overcommit herself to something. She likes to stay busy, as any downtime provides her with too much time to be introspective, which she also dislikes. Athletic and coordinated, Prue is graceful only in body, never in personality. She often ends up with her foot in her mouth, mostly because she lacks an internal filter between her thoughts and words or actions.
To boot, Prue is also incredibly stubborn. She has a staunch internal compass, though how moral it can be is up in the air. She tends to keep her head determined and in one direction. This obstinacy is a deadly combination with her impulsiveness, but Prue often has to let things come to their natural end to see the error in her ways. This makes her a hands-on-learner, for better or worse. She has an internal need to understand how things work, but if this butts heads too much with her idea of how they should work, she can get a bit frustrated. When she’s on the right track, though, she can be unstoppable.
Prudence likes teams, which can come as a surprise to some. If a team is working towards the same goal, Prue’s obstinacy becomes leadership, and as long as the team works smoothly, they can achieve their goals. She has a mind for group dynamics, and when no one else steps up with a plan, Prue does. The problem is that it is often definitive and black and white, without a human element outside of herself. She thinks she knows best, whether or not she actually does, and if pressed hard enough, she will press back.
the history
father ♦ Neville Lovelle, 46, high school teacher mother ♦ Hannah Lovelle, 44, baker siblings ♦ Teddy Lane Lovelle , 20, intern at in the NOLA @lucia , 18, Monroeville patient Eleanor Catherine Lovelle , 16, Robbie Jude Lovelle , 15, barista important people ♦ the people at Phalanx hometown ♦ Augusta, Maine overall history ♦ Prudence was third in line for Neville and Hannah Lovelle and was followed by Eleanor soon after. The start of her life was relatively ordinary. She found companions in her eldest brother, older sister, and twin, and then later, in her youngest and last brother. They were all relatively close in age, and they were a tight-knit clan from the jump. All five of them were named, in some way, shape, or form, after a Beatles’ song, to commemorate their parents’ love for the band. They never caught on with Prudence, though, to her parents’ chagrin.
Light and love surrounded the young days of Prudence Lovelle. She and her siblings ran like a pack, and though they had their spats, Prue was always ready to take on anyone else who made fun of her beloved siblings. As the middle child in terms of birth order, Prue always felt that being there for her family was her special duty. She was tight with all of them, but she and Nellie had a special bond born of sharing the same womb and face. Prue could always, and still does, count on Nellie when things go sideways.
The first thing that went sideways was Teddy, who had always been someone Prue looked up to. An incident at school, some quick switch-ups, and it was like he was gone overnight. Her parents explained that it was a good thing, that they were proud of him, and that he was experiencing a great change in life. All Prue knew was the one week, her brother was there all the time, and the next he was gone and they communicated mostly in phone calls and sloppily-written letters. She tried to be happy for her big brother, for whatever he was doing, but she could only wrap her head around the fact that he was gone.
With Teddy gone, the twins grew closer both to each other and to their eldest sister, Lucy. Prue kicked it with Jude more often, too, and the remaining Lovelles grew even closer. Prue wanted to believe that what happened to Teddy was a fluke, that none of her other siblings would be taken away. She was wrong. When she had just turned twelve, it happened again. It started innocently enough, the three Lovelle girls playing street hockey outside their house, and though Prue was getting competitive, she knew to avoid cars and other people. The day stretched on, but they were having way too much to stop. At first, she had just thought Lucy was trying to leave the game because she was losing. Irritated, she had called out to Lucy with Nellie, but it was like Lucy never heard them. More frustrated by the second, Prue followed Nellie to secure Lucy to safety. They never made it before the car.
The light of Prue’s early days began to dim after that. The paralyzing fear that Lucy wouldn’t wake up was soon replaced by the wild confusion of her removal from their household. She didn’t understand what Monroeville was; all she knew was that, like Teddy, Lucy was leaving them. She wanted Lucy to get better, but she didn’t understand why she had to go so far away to do it. But she was helpless to intervene and waved good-bye to yet another sibling. She wrote when she could, but how much they could speak to Lucy seemed so narrow in comparison to communication with Teddy. She always wrote to Lucy about how much she and Nellie missed her, but she still didn’t understand what had really happened.
What had once felt like a fluke had begun to feel like an inevitability. There were just three of them left, and Prue lived in abject horror that she, Nellie, or Jude would be next. Her bonds with the remaining Lovelle children were only strengthened by being the only ones left standing. Nearly half the family was gone, but the Lovelles went on, checking with the others when they could. Eventually, Prue and Nellie celebrated their thirteenth birthday, but the newly-minted teenagers were not done with big changes.
It was after a practice game, on the way home that Prue finally understood what had really happened to her siblings. The street was quiet at first but getting dark, and the two twins walked alone, Prue just happy to have Nellie attend her games. The walk wasn’t anything new, and as long as Prue had Nellie with her, it didn’t seem too scary. People generally left the two alone, but something must have been different that night. Prue could feel someone behind them, and she quickened her step, her cleats clicking on the concrete. She could feel Nellie reach out to her, and she connected, as they had done a million times.
What happened next was entirely new.
As soon as their hands locked, the world seemed to grow brighter, like someone turned on the sun right before it went down. That lasted only a few seconds before darkness engulfed them.
In the course of just a few heartbeats, the twins’ lives had completely changed. Blinded by the dark, Prue followed her sister with blind faith until they appeared outside their home. The twins rushed inside and explained the whole thing to their parents, talking over each other and tripping over their words. Prue had forgotten all about the person behind them; she could only remember the exhilaration of the light, the suffocating darkness of the shadows. After the Lovelles could get a straight story between the two of them, they had to explain what had really happened to the eldest Lovelles. They had been gifted, as well.
Like Teddy, the girls would be sent down to Phalanx, which was full of kids just like them. They had to learn to control their abilities, for both themselves and the community they now belonged to. The prospect of seeing Teddy again was as joyous as being ripped away from Jude was heartbreaking, but Prue was now confident that gifts would be bestowed upon him as well. Life would have been too cruel to deny him, and with that in mind, she told him it wasn’t really good-bye at all but “see ya later.” As Prue waited for Jude to join them, she took advantage of Phalanx and all it had to offer. She has been training steadily with her power and has improved from glowworm to laser beam. It hasn’t always been easy and natural, but she’s been working on the kinks and the hardships. Though she has managed to remain herself as she works with the light, she can’t help but notice – and point out – when Nellie seems to go too far and loses herself in the shadows. It troubles Prue more than she is willing to admit. Lucy’s placement also troubles Prue, though she is happy to have four of the five Lovelles at Phalanx. Jude coming in felt like a dream, but she still misses her older sister something fierce.
