how the ability works ♦ Catalina has the pathfinder ability, with that ability she is able to take an item and know who owned it, she would get glimpses of their lives, but more importantly to her life, where they currently are. With this ability she is able to track people. Items that belonged to someone more recently, she is able to get a better idea about where they are. Items that they haven't touched in longer times will lead to incorrect memories or memories of someone who had the item more recently. Touching too many items will cause he to become confused about her own memories against her own. To help with this, Catalina wears gloves during a lot of her day to day interactions. When she needs to use her ability to find someone, she will remove her gloves and touch the items. If she uses her ability too much, she will have a harder time distinguishing her own life from others, the memories don't last for longer than a few hours. A few days if the event was traumatic for the owner for the items.

Part of her life is looking professional so people will trust her to find their missing relatives or whoever else, so she typically wears nice clothes while working. When she is working on a case, or even out on her own, she is more likely to dress down and be comfortable.

She was raised in a certain lifestyle and she will do most anything to keep that. When she first got to New Orleans she liquidated her trust fund, she started her business. She is hard working and determined, but mostly with the goals of being so successful that she can get away with anything she wants. She dreams of living above the law, and is already fairly sure that anything she wants to get away with is a phone call to her father away from going away.

When Philomena started getting extra therapy sessions with Dr. Oscar Valdez, no one thought anything of it. She was one of the lost causes of Monroeville, had been there for way too long. When she started to talk about Valdez touching her, no one believed her. When she started to gain weight, Valdez had her put into solitary. Some of the other patients asked about her, she was well loved and she was missed, but he had to hide her away until he could get the baby conceived between them out of her. In the middle of the night, Mena gave birth to her second daughter. Oscar wrapped up the baby in a blanket and released Mena from solitary and back to her room. She asked for her baby, but Oscar left his post as head psychologist and left the state.

His wife, Isabela Valdez had been unable to carry a baby to term and was thrilled when Oscar came home with the baby. She couldn't care less about her husband's infidelities, she had a child to dote on. The family settled down in Miami, Florida and settled into an easy life. Oscar found work as a psychologist, and Isabela had her baby to love.

It didn't last very long.

Isabela grew bored of caring for a child, and left raising Catalina to the care of various nannies and house keepers. Oscar still had a wandering eye, but seeing his wife's neglect of their first daughter did not bring home any more of his bastard children. Catalina grew up spoiled by the attentions of her father, hardened by the neglect of her mother, and filled with the knowledge that there was something unique and special about her. Her father would tell her stories about Monroeville, her birth mother, and the people with abilities in there, and she was fascinated. All her childhood she tried to force her abilities to come out and manifest.

When Catalina turned twelve, she was organizing her father's library and when she touched one of the books, she was overwhelmed with images of who gave him the book, the moment the book became her father's. The shopkeeper who stocked the book, everything. It was so overwhelming, she passed out completely.

Her mother found her hours later and told her to stop being lazy and get up. Her mother did not possess an ability, and did not seem to care to learn about the world that she and her father were part of. Catalina told her father about her gift and showed him what she was able to do. He kissed her forehead and called tutors to train her in her ability.

When Catalina was fifteen, she started to act out. She had been given everything she ever wanted and wasn't enjoying the new rules around her home placed by her mother. Isabela wanted to suddenly act like a real parent and Catalina wasn't going to have it. She started to sneak out of the house, she would stay out all night, drink, use drugs, it was everything that she wanted to do and her parents couldn't stop her. Her father supported her through rehabs, and she was seventeen when she was finally able to get a six month sober chip.

When she was seventeen, her mother was screaming at her, calling her a junkie and a whore. Catalina picked up a vase from the mantle and smacked her over the head with it. It wasn't enough to kill her, but she was charged with battery. All of her family's money couldn't keep her from serving time for it, though her father told everyone that she had gone to a boarding school in Sweden. She served a year, released with mandatory anger management classes and a heart filled apology to her mother.

When Catalina returned home it wasn't too long before her mother started with her judgement and snide comments. No amount of vases to the skull would keep that woman in her place. Instead, Catalina drained her trust fund and left in the middle of the night. She returned to New Orleans in an attempt to find some connection to her mother and the life that her father had there.

Catalina bought a small home with some of her trust fund and started a business as a private investigator. She was unlicensed, but ruthless and found a clientele that didn't care too much for petty things like a license. She's been making a decent living in New Orleans, occasionally meeting with her father for expensive dinners and gifts. Occasionally when she's feeling sentimental she'll ship her mother a vase as a reminder that she has not forgiven or forgotten.
