Jude liked Asha. They'd been talking through evOlvd but talking to her in person was a feat he had yet to accomplish. What if she didn't like his shoelaces? Cora had said that she wouldn't notice, but he wanted to be sure because he noticed. What if his voice was annoying, or he smelled weird? Or, gosh, what if she didn't like the cold?
But... she'd made a joke about it... so she knew what to expect. That was good, right? Questions raced through his head. He was paying attention to eveything that morning-- what clothes he chose to wear, how he combed his hair, his posture as he stood in front of a mirror.
"This is dumb-- it doesn't matter what you look like. Like... Beauty and the Beast... or whatever." Yea, that was romantic, or something. "Agh-- stop talking to yourself." With his luck, someone would walk by his room, hear what was happening, and go tell everyone that he was high. The only thing he actually ever got high on was life.
Okay... he was ready. He took a breath and went to go meet her, having previously agreed to take her out for tacos. He really just wanted the chance to talk to her alone. His heart skipped a beat as he made eye contact with her near the house's exit. This was silly-- they'd seen each other before but this was different.
"Hey," he greeted, grinning and offering a wave. "Thanks for coming with me. You... look nice."

Feeling nervous wasn’t something that Astrid was accustomed to. Restless night, sweaty palms, about ten different outfits that she ran by Cora at least half a dozen times. It wasn’t like Jude was someone that she hadn’t interacted with before. They lived in the same house and had dinner together rather regularly because of it. And yet for some reason, the idea of going to get tacos, just the two of them, was something that called for the perfect outfit, the perfect hair, the perfect everything. Perfection was such a far-fetched notion, yet Asha found herself yearning for it in this moment. What if Jude thought she was weird because of the shirt that she chose? What if it was problematic that her socks didn’t match? It was irrational, Asha knew it it. She was going to be wearing shoes - the color of her socks didn’t matter.
It had taken the better part of the morning - and a large portion of the previous night - to figure out what she was actually going to wear. Cora had been remarkably patient with her, though the shapeshifter was almost positive that her best friend was getting some kind of joy out of seeing her so frazzled. It was just Jude. That was the thing that she had to continue to remind herself. Their friendship had been easy, without any stress or pressure, and suddenly it felt like everything was different. Astrid didn’t think that things were actually that different, but the moment felt like it was.
Ultimately she had settled on a trusty pair of dark wash jeans and a three-quarter sleeve striped shirt that hugged her at the waist. The outfit was completed with a pair of black ankle boots that added a couple of inches to her height. It felt like she had taken ages getting ready, but thankfully Asha had enough time to get through her hair and add a light touch of makeup before descending the staircase and waiting for Jude. While she waited, she found herself playing with her phone, checking and rechecking her appearance. The sound of approaching footsteps had her looking up, her gaze landing a pair of blue eyes that could have held the ocean in them.
Straightening her posture, Asha smiled brightly at Jude. ”Hey,” she started, shoving her phone into her pocket. ”Thanks for asking. You look good, too.” And he did. But that didn’t make this feel any less awkward in the moment. It felt like she was trying too hard not to screw this up. ”It’s been a while since I’ve had a taco date. Are you ready to head out?”

What would Cora say? That would get Jude through the night. He could hear her in his head as he approached Asha, desperate not to say something stupid or insulting. Of course, he'd never say anything insulting on purpose, but sometimes when he tried to be charming it just did the complete opposite and he hated himself.
"Seriously, no taco dates in a while? I'm excited. Mine are pretty great," he said with pride, though he quickly became horrified. "I mean-- Not that I... I actually haven't gone on a real date before. I have taco dates... with myself, I guess," he elaborated, finding that his plan to be a smoothtalker had already failed.
"Let's go," he prompted, ready to do just about anything to find relief from his embarrassment.
He walked with her out the door, grinning as the cool air his his face. "So... Mr. Perona seems really nice," he offered, though again he was regretting everything. "Yea, sure, Jude, talk about her brother on our date. Genius."
"So... you can turn into a wolf," he pondered, hoping to learn more about her. "That's really cool. Do you do it a lot? What's it like?" he asked, unable to really fathom what it could possibly feel like. He'd never seen anyone change like that right in front of him, so the idea was still very abstract and it brought him a great deal of curiosity. "Or, if that's like... awkward or super personal it's totally okay. I just... haven't really known one before... a shapeshifter." Not close, anyway.

Cora was the person that had been the person to listen to all of Asha’s fears about this date, to hear every silly thing that came out of her mouth as she worried about if her outfit was right, if her hair made sense, if her breath was bad; every little thing that she could be worried about, she was. This wasn’t even the first date that Asha had been out on, but it certainly felt like one of the more important ones. How much of that was because Jude lived at Phalanx with everyone else remained to be seen. Most of it was probably just because of who he was. She had found him to be cute from the day he set foot in the house and though she had helped to welcome him and was quick to befriend him, but this was different.
”None,” she reiterated, unable to stop the grin that broke over her features when he backtracked. The aura of innocence that Jude carried was something that Astrid had felt within her bones and the more time that she spent around him, the more she found herself embracing those feelings within herself. There was a part of her that had wanted to grow up so quickly that it was nice to just be able to live as the teenager that she was instead of pretending like she was more grown up. ”Oh. Well, that’s good to know, I think,” she said, offering him a smile in an attempt to reassure him that his words hadn’t put her off the idea of going on this taco date with him.
As he pulled the door open, she stepped outside and waited for him on the porch until he followed after and she pulled the door shut. Leaving behind Phalanx for the day was something that Asha was eager to do. While she loved it there, there was something absolutely freeing about leaving the halls and being able to do what she wanted for the day. Shoving her hands into her pockets, her feet carried her further from the house and towards their destination - which thankfully wasn’t so far away that it wasn’t possible to walk to. Then again, as someone that was almost constantly moving she could have walked for several miles and been fine.
”Yeah, he’s not terrible. I guess I lucked out in the brother category,” she said. It was a rather fond tone that she adopted, but wasn’t one that she actually allowed Ash to hear that often. The less he knew about how much she adored him, the better her reputation would be.
Turning her gaze back towards him, she grinned a bit at his question. ”No, that’s okay. I don’t mind.” Asha offered him another smile, not wanting Jude to feel as though he couldn’t ask her the questions that were on his mind. ”Yeah, it’s interesting. I try to do it at least once a week, but it’s... It’s not always painless.“ She paused, trying to gauge how to offer another explanation that didn’t sound like it was a terrible thing to experience. ”Imagine seeing the world for the first time, everything almost more dull than what it is now, but somehow more vibrant at the same time. The smells, the sounds… Some of that sticks with me even in this shape,” Asha said, unable to keep the smile from her face as she allowed herself to reminisce.

Talking to Asha became easier as the minutes passed. Jude found his apprehension calming, his tension loosening. He wanted to learn more about her and was eager to ask her more questions. When she mentioned that shape shifting wasn't always painless, he wrinkled his nose. "Oh, I'm sorry! I guess I never thought about that," he admitted. He only had thought of how cool it would be to experience the world through different eyes. He hadn't thought about the possible discomfort that came with it. "Well... it's really cool. I love wolves," he pointed out. I mean... he did now. "So, you have slightly different senses... like... even now," he repeated, looking for confirmation. "Are they stronger?" he asked, his thoughts suddenly going to the fact that he practically emitted cold, like a walking, breathing air conditioner.
"Sometimes the heat makes me sick," he shared, wanting her to know that she wasn't alone in having some difficulties with her ability. "Living in New Orleans kind of stinks sometimes," he said, grinning slightly. I mean, he'd have chosen Alaska... but he hadn't had the choice to make. Even so, he wasn't complaining. He was glad he ended up where he did... and that he was who he was.
They reached the place quickly and he opened the door for her, grinning as he gestured for her to go inside. "So... I really like their number four because it has like nachos in it which is really weird but great. And if you want, after, we can go see this cool spot around the corner because the sun will be setting and it's super cool but that's lame and if you don't want to it's fine. Do you like sour cream? I love sour cream," he shared, sitting down at a table. "Gah! Wait! Sorry," he said before jumping back up and pulling her chair out for her. He handed her a menu and looked at it eagerly.

Jude was sweet. He had always been someone that was easy to talk to, approachable and goofy in his mannerisms. He didn’t try to be someone else in order to impress people; he was unabashedly himself and Astrid had found that was one of the things that she liked most about him. People who had to pretend to be another way in order to get approval from someone that they wanted to be around weren't the type of people that she wanted to associate herself with, no matter how much she might have occasionally felt like she herself needed to be someone else in order to gain the approval of another. Asha was learning to be herself, to accept all of the flaws that came with that, but there was no denying that it was going to take time.
”It’s okay. It’s just part of what it is. My dad says he doesn’t hurt anymore, so I think it’s just one of those things that is going to require practice, y’know?” The snapping of her bones as they reshaped from one form to another was something that Asha didn’t think that she would ever actually be able to get used to, but Hector Perona insisted otherwise. He swore that the shifts would come smoothly one day and she wouldn’t even realize that it had happened because it would be so effortless. ”They’re definitely stronger. Which is pretty unfortunate when you consider some of the smells around here,” Asha offered light, turning a grin towards the boy beside her. What might have been mild to anyone else was often intense for Asha and made her wish that breathing wasn’t an option.
Soft eyes turned towards Jude, the hands that were tucked into her pockets fidgeting against the fabric as he spoke. ”I wouldn’t mind a colder climate.” Truthfully, Asha could have done well wherever she was plopped. It was the wolf aspect of her that found itself yearning for a place to frolic without having to worry about heatstroke. ”Maybe they’ll have schools all over in the future. But for what it’s worth, I’m glad you’re here,” the blonde said in earnest, doing her best to ignore the heat that spread to her cheeks at such an admittance.
Clearing her throat, she ducked beneath his arm when he opened the door and she listened to him as he started to ramble again. She could have listened to him talk all day about everything and nothing, so long as he was talking to her. It would have been impossible to interject and yet he stopped himself when he realized that he sat down without pulling her chair out - a gentlemanly act that Asha certainly hadn’t been expecting, but was appreciative of regardless and took the menu he handed her with another smile. ”Thanks. And I think all of that sounds wonderful. From nachos to sour cream and everything in between. Although, I do like some salsa with my sour cream. A little heat to balance out the cold.” Sort of like them, she supposed.

Jude grinned, nodding. He could understand that practice made the process more comfortable. I mean, when Jude had first begun to show signs of having something going on, he was definitely less comfortable with the constant cold. Now, it was the opposite. "I hope it gets better for you, then," he said with a grin. "If it makes it easier, I'd stay with you while you tried. I mean, I'm sorry if that's weird... or too much. I just mean... if you wanted to not be alone... I'd stay with you." He genuinely just wanted her to be more comfortable so if he could do something to achieve that, he would.
He chuckled, wrinkling his nose. "Yea, sometimes the city has some gross smells," he agreed, nodding. He certainly wouldn't have wanted enhanced senses in some cases.
"I wouldn't want to leave," he assured, grinning slightly and shrugging. "Not now, anyway. It's too late. Thanks, though. Me too." He didn't like the weather there, but now he had a life there. That was more important to him. "It's okay though. I'm hoping as I get older, it'll be easier. Like yours," he said, willing to wait for that. He was patient enough. The summers, though, he didn't particularly enjoy those.
He grinned widely as she approved of the menu options, his eyes widening with excitement. "We can order a bunch of salsa and sour cream! I love sour cream," he shared, his mouth nearly watering at the thought of it. He didn't like salsa-- he was definitely sensitive to spices-- but he could appreciate a good pile of salsa over a taco if someone else was eating it.
"You look really pretty! And you like food... it's super cool! Like, the best of both worlds," he said with a laugh. "Do you like to watch movies?"

Asha’s eyes widened, surprised by the offer that seemed to fly out of Jude’s mouth. It wasn’t exactly a common thing for people to wait around while a shifter attempted to practice gaining more control over their ability. It was something that the family did, but outside of that, it just wasn’t something that the teen had ever even considered as something that could be a possibility. Despite how much it had caught her off guard, the sweetness of the sentiment remained and it quickly brought a smile to her face. ”Thank you,” she replied genuinely, reaching out her hand to gently grip his arm.
”Imagine it about ten times worse than what you get,” Asha commented, her nose wrinkling at the mere thought. It was one of the few reasons that she might have preferred to be in a countryside somewhere. Admittedly, she enjoyed the hustle and bustle of New Orleans and, as peaceful as the country seemed, something told her that she would get bored of it too quickly to be there permanently.
She laughed at his comment and nodded, understanding what he meant. ”Yeah, I imagine it would be hard. Between the friendships and having your siblings all over the place now. It must be nice being with them again.” Asha knew that Nellie had often spoken highly about the littlest Lovelle, but she had never imagined that he would turn out to be as sweet as he was. ”It’ll get easier. You just have to believe it will.” It was optimistic, but that was who she was at the core of her person. She believed the best in the world and in the people until she had a reason to believe otherwise.
The palpable excitement in the air was infectious and Asha found herself closing the menu, already prepared to order just about one of everything if it would get Jude to continue smiling like that. ”Sour cream is delicious. But only the legit stuff, none of that non-fat garbage people talk about.” The idea of sour cream mixing with salsa over a taco was enough to make her stomach groan wantonly for some food.
Asha practically beamed at Jude when he complimented her and she propped her arms on the table that they were seated at. ”Absolutely. Movies are the best. Which one is your favorite?”
