Cora shook her somewhat wild blue curls free from the clip that had been holding them back from her face for the past three hours or so, grateful for the feeling of freedom that always seemed to come from letting her hair down. It was rare for her to wear her hair up, even in the humid heat that seemed like the only constant in New Orleans; but that was one of the many pesky things about food service, they had certain policies regarding how you could wear longer hair, and truth be told, she couldn’t say that she blamed them. After all, she also didn’t want to pick someone’s hair out of her coffee. Reaching up, she ran a hand through the brightly colored strands, ruffling them a bit and practically feeling her hair follicles breathing a sigh of relief as she did so. As much as she loved this job, and she did love this job, she was glad when the night was done and she could make her way back towards Phalanx House, because after the hours filled with schooling and then the hours dealing with people who were really likely to snap on her for taking too long making their three-sentence long coffee order, she was always happy to get away from that kind of an environment.
Oh well, at least they got to wear their own clothes under the aprons. Reaching behind her, Cora untied it and folded it over her arm, turning to scan the few people that were left in the building for… aha. Her eyes landed on familiar white-blonde hair, and a bright smile touched her lips as she made her way towards him. “Now I know you weren’t planning on ditching me so that you wouldn’t have to walk home with me, right?” Her eyes sparkled with mischief, and the jest was clear in her voice. At least, she hoped it was. The whole “emotions” thing was never something that she was great with, and there were times when she was actually afraid that the people in her life were going to take offense to something that she did or said because she wasn’t clear enough with them. So far, however, nobody had really said anything to her one way or the other, so she supposed that she was doing a good enough job.
“Shall we?” It wasn’t that Cora was scared to walk home alone in the dark, she’d done it plenty of times in the past, but she genuinely liked walking with Jude. There were some people at Phalanx who seemed very much on the doom and gloom side of life, and while she felt that there was no reason for her personally to judge those people, she was not that kind of person at all. And, as far as she could tell, Jude wasn’t really that person either, which made her gravitate towards him pretty naturally. She enjoyed working with him, too; he brought an energy to the shift that seemed to make her whole night pick up, though she did still feel ready to get out of there by the time her shift was done. That was one thing that didn’t change no matter who she was working with. “How’d your shift go? You weren’t caught up in that one customer who brought back her soy latte three times, were you?” There was a woman who had brought it back three times, complaining that it had been made with regular milk instead of soy milk. It hadn’t, but she hadn’t seemed to care about that.
Jude loved his job, but sometimes it got a little hectic. He loved coffee himself so he couldn't really complain, but you never saw him going into a coffee shop and causing a scene because his drink wasn't the perfect temperature.
Cora made it all the more interesting. She was friendly and always put a smile on his face. The young woman was quickly becoming one of his favorite people and he felt fortunate to have met someone like her so soon after getting to Phalanx. It helped that she had blue hair-- blue was his favorite color.
He'd just finished taking his apron off and slinging his backpack strap over his shoulder when he heard her address him, a grin spreading across his face. "Who're you?" he asked in jest, looking over at her. "Flora, right?"
He grabbed himself an iced coffee before walking to the door, holding it open with his foot and gesturing for her to go through. A laugh escaped when she mentioned the grumpy woman with the soy fetish. "I dodged that one. Had literally just switched from the register to the kitchen." News of the fiasco had definitely spread throughout the room. "It wasn't too bad today though. What about yours? Spit in anyone's drink?" he asked with a smirk as he took a sip of his coffee.
"What're you feelin' for dinner, girl?" he asked with another grin. "Come hang out with me. I actually got all my homework done this week."

Despite what a lot of people might believe, Cora was rather used to a fast paced environment. She had grown up in San Francisco, and while it certainly wasn’t as clogged and congested as New York City, or so she had heard, there were enough people to force her to get used to making split second decisions and prioritizing well, her whole life really. So, when it came to applying that in an environment like the Quarter Cafe, it was a job that she had taken to with relative ease. It helped that she had been going there for years and had a genuine love of all things caffeine-related, but she was good at this job, and honestly? Even on the bad days, she liked it. It wasn’t a job where she was doing the same exact thing every single day, and she could always stay some form of busy if she put her mind to it. It meant that she was able to talk to people, too, and that was something that she loved, regardless of anything that she had been feeling that particular day.
Cora laughed as Jude asked her who she was, and let mock-disbelief and hurt show on her face as he wrongly guessed her name. “You forgot already?” The disbelief faded into that same, bright smile. “Well, you were close. It’s Dora, think Explorer. Except, you know, with blue hair.” She caught the slight eye-roll and good-natured smile of a coworker behind Jude as she grabbed her latte and headed towards the door with him. “And here I thought chivalry was dead.” She chuckled as she slipped past him and out the door, smiling at the heat that washed over her as she left the air conditioning. There were people who thought she was insane for it, but she had always enjoyed the humid heat that came with living in Louisiana, even though it was starting to cool to something more mild. “You were lucky. I was running out an order, but she was yelling so much I heard everything.” She shook her head. The way that people insisted on making a scene when they perceived that something was wrong had always baffled her, but in this scenario it was especially bad. She couldn’t help but sympathize, she had been on the bad side of a bad customer more than once in her time at the cafe, and she was sure that she hadn’t seen the end of it yet. “Just yours.” Looking up at Jude, she batted her eyelashes, looking the picture of innocence. “It wasn’t too bad, only had to remake a few things all day, not including Miss Soy Milk’s lattes.” She shrugged, taking a quick sip of her latte and relishing the taste.
“Oh my god, I haven’t even thought about dinner.” But even as she said the words, her stomach grumbled, and she put her hand over it with a shocked look. “Hang out with someone who can’t even remember my name?” She nudged his arm with her shoulder playfully, thinking about anything else that she had to get done that evening. Truth be told, there wasn’t much. She was the kind of person who did their homework the day it was assigned instead of the day before it was due, so really, the only things that she had left to do were… the extra things. “But I suppose I could make an exception if it means that you’ll actually remember who I am. And if you’ll decide on dinner, I can’t make that decision to save my life right now.”

Jude laughed, raising a finger to his head. "Dora, right. Got it," he assured. "Chivalry is alive and well. You just have crappy friends," he fired, offering a sweet smile right after as if to make up for it. Jude definitely wasn't the perfect person but he did try to be polite whenever he could. Especially with Cora... she deserved it. He was happy to do any little thing to make her happy.
His nose crikled as the heat hit him like a wall. God, he hated this weather. If it weren't for his friends and family, he'd pack up and move to the equator. Winter couldn't come quickly enough.
"Some people just need to make problems out of nothing. They're like... angry at someone else or something, so they go out and act like jerks so they're not the only people miserable." He couldn't stand people like that. Jude was pretty tolerant, but one thing that irked him was when people were rude. And when it came down to it, they served people coffee for a living. Despite the high demand for a caffienated beverage throughout the day, not getting the right drink was never going to be an emergency situation.
When she pointed out that she'd spit in his drink, he gasped, feigning shock as he raised his free hand to his chest. "Lora--" he scolded, holding a serious expression on his face for as long as he could manage before grinning. "It's cool. There's mayonnaise in yours."
"How? I've been thinking about it all day," he said, acting out a near faint for dramatic effect. He pumped a fist in the air, realizing he was victorious as she agreed to hang. "Luckily for you, I've known I wanted tacos for dinner since three this morning." He hopped a couple times before turning a corner, heading for a small Mexican food place not far from Phalanx.

A lot of people would classify Cora as a friendly person, someone who went out of her way to befriend others, particularly if they didn’t have someone in their life to make them feel comfortable or at home. She had been in that boat plenty of times in her young life, and she didn’t want anybody to feel the same. Every indication that she had ever gotten of Jude was that he was much the same way, and she had been drawn to him for a friendship the first time that she had met him. Admittedly, that was recently, but the two of them had become close, enough so that she looked forward to working with him and generally seeing him around the house. He was just the kind of kid who practically radiated sunshine, and since she was also one of those people, meeting someone else who was like that was pretty nice.
“Well clearly, since one of them can’t remember my name.” Looking up at him, she pursed her lips, looking annoyed for all of about five seconds before the look dissolved into a smile. It wasn’t late enough in the evening for the city to truly be coming alive just yet, but something about being out in the Quarter at all, no matter what time of day, always made her feel a little more alive and ready for everything. However, she did notice that Jude appeared to not share her love of the heat, and too late she remembered his aversion to all things heat related. Immediately, concern crinkled at her brow, though she tried to wipe away the visual cues of it. She was sure that Jude didn’t want her worrying about him, after all it wasn’t like she was his mother or anything; but there was still something about him that made him feel like a cross between a best friend and a little brother, which meant she felt the familiar impulse to make sure he was okay, comfortable, what have you. “That’s gotta be it. I mean, I get that someone could be lactose intolerant and if we made a drink with the wrong milk it could be a disaster, but… that response was excessive. Especially since we remade it right in front of her with a fresh carton of soy milk and everything.” Cora rolled her eyes, taking a sip from the latte in her hand.
She was taking another sip of her latte when Jude said that there was mayonnaise in it, and her eyes went wide as she clapped her hand over her mouth, stopping in her tracks. For a moment, swallowing the drink became incredibly difficult, but when she finally figured out a way to do so, she began to laugh, looking up at him. “Okay one, never do that while I’m mid-drink, two,” she swatted playfully at his arm, “I know I’m super white, but not even I am white enough to drink mayonnaise, you jerk.” She dissolved into a fit of giggles, drawing the attention of a nearby group of people, but she didn’t really care
“Maybe because my world doesn’t revolve around food?” Cora stuck her tongue out at him. Every teenage boy that she had met in her entire existence was thinking about one of two things at any given time, and food was definitely on that list. However, now that she was thinking about it, she realized that she… hadn’t really eaten since that morning. It wasn’t like she did it intentionally, there were just times where she didn’t get hungry. Now, however, she was beginning to feel the ill effects of that, and she was all too happy to follow Jude’s lead. “Oh my god, tacos.” She was practically salivating at the thought. “You officially have the key to my heart forever solely because you suggested that, just so you know.”

Living in Louisiana, dealing with heat was something that Jude had tried to grow accustomed to. There was only so much he could do to avoid it. And so he did what he usually did in similar situations, taking another sip of his iced coffee and pushing the thought of his discomfort to the back of his mind. Cora was right-- the last thing Jude wanted her to do was worry.
Jude laughed as his best friend nearly choked to death-- a true sign of genuine friendship. "That's the best time to do it," he defended, raising his hands. What was the point of making jokes if someone's lungs didn't fill with their beverage in response? "Would you try it-- mayonnaise in a drink? If I dared you? Or, like, how much money would it take?" These things were good to know. Surely, another Phalanx game of Truth or Dare was right around the corner.
A mischievous smirk appeared at the corners of Jude's lips when Cora revealed that her world didn't revolve around food. "Well, sure, it revolves around me. But... food should be a close second, Cor. What the heck do you think about during the day, then?" Maybe it was like... flowers or puppies or men's abs. He didn't even pretend to have the slightest clue about the mind of a girl.
"Iiiit's taco time," he sang, shimmying his shoulders rhythmically as his pace picked up speed. "Glad to hear that. It's on me. You can pay me back in ice cream when my stomach wakes me up at four tomorrow morning." It was a real solid plan.
They reached the small Mexican place and he opened the door for Cora, starting to laugh a bit as a memory returned to the front of his mind. "So, are we just not going to talk about this?" he asked, holding up his phone, their evOlvd match revealed as he couldn't help but laugh again. "I couldn't deny you-- that felt mean," he admitted in good humor. He definitely didn't have some secret crush on the girl, and he wanted to make sure they took care of the awkwardness before it got out of hand. "Find anyone? Huh?" he asked, nudging her shoulder playfully.

Cora loved the city in the evening. There was something about the way that it seemed to come alive just as the sun started slipping towards the horizon that was absolutely beautiful to her, and it was something that she yearned to experience. One day, after she turned 18, she would just stay out all night and experience everything that every tourist seemed to chase when they came here, and she would love every second of it. The fact that she might be building up some pretty intense expectations about the city that sprawled at her feet crossed her mind, but she quickly pushed it away. Truth be told, even if things turned out differently… she loved this city. That wouldn’t change for anything.
“You know,” Cora paused to think about the possibility of drinking mayonnaise. Just the thought was enough to make her want to gag, but the sweet taste of the mocha lingered in her mouth, and she was convinced that was the only thing preventing it. “I really want to say no. Like, with the fiber of my being. However,” she braced herself for the admission, already thinking about the hundreds of horrid things that Jude could do with the information that was about to spill from her lips. She had heard of the fabled Phalanx Truth or Dare games, and had been disappointed about missing them, but she had a feeling that with what she was about to say, there was going to be a scheduling shift so that she would definitely be able to participate. “If you dared me to, I might. Maybe.” She would. She definitely would. See, despite her generally bubbly and kind demeanor, she had a bit of a competitive streak, which meant that whenever she was dared to do something, she had to. It was just the way that her brain operated, and she hated it.
Cora rolled her eyes when he said that her world obviously revolved around him. To be honest, it did in some respects. He was one of her best friends, and her life did kind of revolve around them. “Literally anything that pops into my head.” She arched her eyebrows before chuckling. “Usually what I’m going to do when I get off work or out of class. Occasionally about people in my life. Sometimes whatever books I’m reading.” She looked up at him. “You’re getting a really in depth look of the female brain right now. I hope you’re taking notes.” She knew that he probably wasn’t, getting Jude to focus on anything other than food was a difficult task, one that she was certainly not able to achieve most of the time. The way that he shimmied his shoulders and declared it to be taco time as they made their way to her favorite mexican place reinforced the whole idea. “I’m always down for ice cream, so you’ve got yourself a deal.” Whether or not she would willingly wake up at four in the morning for ice cream was another matter entirely, but here they were.
Cora slipped inside the door that Jude opened for her, but when he held up the phone showing their evOlvd match, she felt her cheeks burn red. “I mean…” She had no idea how to finish the sentence, mostly because she had no idea how to proceed through this situation in general. She had swiped right on Jude because he was her best friend, and because swiping left felt far too cruel. Besides, it wasn’t like she was going to match with him anyways, right? Well, apparently that particular train of thought had been absolutely wrong, and when the “it’s a match!” notification had appeared on her phone, she was pretty sure she was going to pass out. Okay, so maybe that was a little dramatic, but she had been worried for a little bit now. They were friends, was that something that he wanted to change? She wasn’t harboring any kind of secret crush on him by any means, but she also had no idea to tell him that if he did like her. So she had avoided it. But apparently, that was no longer an option. He continued, and she felt her shoulders sag in utter relief.
“Thank god,” she breathed, her bounce in her step returning right along with the bright smile that she always seemed to have. “It was the puppy picture, wasn’t it?” She chuckled, reaching up to run a hand through her hair. “Well. So far I have two total matches. One of them is you, and the other one was Asha. Since I don’t have a secret crush on either of my best friends, all signs point to no.” She pursed her lips, pulling out her phone to quickly check her app. Nope, still nothing. “What about you? Any gifted babes sliding their way into your inbox?”

Jude grinned, the endless possibilities flooding into his head. "Okay. We're going to have some sort of food wars. The dares can get worse and worse each turn. Nothing that would make us sick, just stuff that would be totally gross. Like Pickle cupcakes," he suggested. "The first person to refuse to eat something? Loser. But no spicy foods because that's not fair." They needed to make sure they were on the same level and there were going to be a lot of rules and spectators. It was important.
"I got it all in here," he said pointing to his head... with confidence that should not have been there at all. Jude knew next to nothing about the female mind.
He grinned, playfully nudging her shoulder when she agreed to ice cream. "So... ice cream after tacos, then?" How he was not four hundred pounds... science couldn't explain it. "You can't say no you said always and also I'm handsome and irresistable," he explained. So... she couldn't turn him down. It was impossible.
He laughed when Cora showed her relief. "Didn't meant to freak you out. If I liked you like that I'd probably be even more awkward... which is... wow. I'm already awkward. I hate that I'm awkward," he thought aloud, thinking of Asha and how she probably thought he was a fucking mess because he lowkey was a fucking mess.
Of course, his face flushed when Cora said Asha's name. "No one," he said quickly, though he was incredibly, plainfully clear that this was a lie. "Ugh-- I mean... that's not true. But... erh-" he stammered. Asha was Cora's best friend. Cora would hate him. "Would you ever go scuba diving?"
