Things had been so amazing with Rowen and Declan. He trudged through the crowd of entitled Primrose students and entered into the grounds of the ivory tower for mutants. He took in a deep breath, remembering his graduation day from the school and how much he swore that he was never going to go back there. Then he started sleeping with the headmistress on and off for years, so he clearly knew that his word meant shit anymore. Declan ran his hand over his face, it had been a long night at the bar. A lot of long nights. Ever since Nerys fucking Oswald decided to out their community. He was coping with regulars who were terrified of Monroeville. With patrons who were afraid of their families and friends finding out. Employees who were terrified of the police raiding the bar to take them into custody or whatever this new world order under Nerys' reign had to offer them.
Nerys. She was impulsive, irrational, and she was everything that Declan was growing to find annoying over fun and endearing. She put all of them at risk, and didn't seem to care one bit about anyone but herself.
Declan climbed the stairs to the faculty dorms, remembering a few wild nights in his youth with graffitiing doors and pranks. Rowen, she was everything that Nerys wasn't and he was finding with every step just how much he was craving that for years. He had wanted to break things off with Nerys, they weren't good together or for each other. They were barely friends, and she didn't mean anything to him. He thought that was okay. Just easy sex, but after spending time with Rowen. He stopped in front of the door with her name and took another deep breath to steady any last nerves.
After spending time with Rowen he realized that he could be with someone who he really cared deeply about for the first time in his life.
If she was scared about Nerys' retaliation, Declan wanted to protect her. He wanted to keep her safe from her older sister and he wanted to make sure that she knew that he wasn't just going to hurt her. Declan knocked on the bedroom door, hoping that he would be able to catch her between classes or lessons. Even if she ended up yelling at him for not knowing that they were related, he would still at least get to see her. That was a win for him after the nights he had been having.
The world after Nerys’s announcement had been different. Not many kids came directly to her, but she could feel their anxiety. They wanted something like reassurance, and for some, that was easy. Some could pass for human well enough; others? Not so much, and it was those that were the hardest. She hadn’t been surprised by the announcement herself. There was very little that surprised her anymore. Nerys was a woman of brilliance and impulse and always had been. In fact, she was a little surprised that Nerys hadn’t joined the political ring earlier; in retrospect, it was a perfect fit for her. She supposed that she should have been more frightened than she was; she should have been angry about. But she couldn’t manage to be, not after everything. Nerys would only ever be Nerys, and the rest of the world didn’t seem to faze her sister. She came and went as she pleased and didn’t bother to call or text, not that Rowen had reached out to her either. She didn’t know what to say to her.
She also didn’t know what to say to Declan. Gorgeous, kind, wonderful Declan, who just so happened to sleep with her sister for an inordinate amount of years before they met. Who just so happened to be one of her sister’s most consistent…friends? She didn’t know. Obviously, she and Nerys never talked too intimately on the subject. And she would have liked to say it was all Nerys and her white-hot temper. Had she been younger and dumber, she might have hidden behind her sister’s anger and made a show of deferring to it. But that wasn’t what her leaving him on read or turning her phone off completely. It wasn’t his fault, either. He was…so much more than she thought she’d ever get.
And what was she? She was just scared. And more than a little stupid, she guessed. At some point, she had convinced herself this was easier. For her, at least. She was trying to make the choice for them before he or life could make it. Good things tended to end for her, and she was always the one left behind on the cutting room floor. Perhaps it was easier to let it taper off before the inevitable end; perhaps, she convinced herself, this was the mercy they both needed at the moment. She was full of shit, that’s what she was.
She climbed the stairs to the dorm room kept in her name. It doubled as an on-school office space when she needed it, and she needed it today. Her last lesson had ended in a student crying about transitioning out of Primrose, and all she needed was a space that could be quiet and empty for a little bit. And to eat the meager lunch she had packed. But then she saw him, in the hallway. Outside of her door. For a second, she was sure she died. She was sure that her head and heart floated away and this was the mocking afterlife for her. It hadn’t been a long time since she last saw him, but it felt like forever. Her heart thrummed in her throat. All the mental – and physical – gymnastics she had gone through to avoid him, and he had just shown up at Primrose. He had sought her out. Her chest squeezed too tightly at the thought, and she had to step back a little bit. She thought about a quick getaway, but her sneakers made a squeak on the floor. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
“Uh, hey.” She wasn’t quite sure she was moving until she stopped abruptly, still about ten feet from him, keys in hand. “Would you like to go inside?” Or maybe he just wanted to yell at her in the hall and end it all right there. He’d be well within his rights to.
Seeing Rowen again just reminded him that she was the woman he wanted to spend his life with. She was amazing, she was gorgeous and intelligent. She was everything that he could imagine having for his future, even if his past was driving a wedge between them. He had been with Nerys for years. She was his friend, they kept each other company when there was no one else around, and he knew deep down that things should have ended long ago. That keeping things going with Nerys as long as he did was only going to blow up in their faces one day, and it did in the most royal way.
"Hey." He returned to her when she stopped away from him. He just wanted to talk to her, to be near her again. She didn't throw herself down the stairs to avoid him, so that was the smallest sign of progress. He wanted nothing more than to just talk to her and figure out how they were going to make things work between them. Rowen was amazing and he missed spending time with her. She made him laugh, she had the cutest smile, and he couldn't get enough of her. "Yeah that sounds good." He said, stepping aside from her sleeping quarters so she would be able to lead the way and unlock any door. He could easily break it down, break the lock, anything like that, but that seemed a bit extreme. Even when talking with a woman who literally jumped out of windows to avoid talking with him about what they were to each other now.
"After you, Ro." He was just happy to be near her and see that she was all in one piece still. All of those jumps had to lead to some interesting stories about her broken bones. Considering they bonded on that first night over her broken finger, he wouldn't expect anything less from her.
"Thanks for not jumping out of a window." He said with a small smile, hoping to ease some of the tensions.
For the most part, in her life, Rowen had thought there was a part of it that was closed to her, as though she had missed the opportunity and now it had passed her by. It was a ridiculous thought, and one her counselors had tried her best to talk her out of since she was little. She just had figured that she was to be the one who held back and waved from the porch without joining in. For so long, that had felt like her destiny, but then Declan had made her think, if even just for a blink, that she could join in. That had felt like a deceit when she had seen the betrayal in Nerys’s eyes. It had felt much too much like the day she discovered her powers before Nerys.
But Declan was there, in the flesh, and she would have to deal with it. She took a steadying breath, tapping her keys against her palm. She was the rabbit, and she was caught. He moved out of the way of the door, but her movements were still slow and hesitant. Chewing on the inside of her lip, she fumbled with a lock for a second before the key went through. Anxiety about the talk to come still welled in her, but she focused on his small smile and joke. She didn’t really deserve either. “Third floor is always scary to jump from,” she tried to return as smoothly as she could, which wasn’t very smoothly at all.
The door swung open to the bare dorm, and she stepped back to allow him room to pass in first. “Uh, you can make yourself comfortable. Sorry that there’s not much here; I spend most of my down time at my house.” She gestured to the limited seating options of the bed and the desk chair. The dorm room had reminded her too much of the sterility of her former years, and after she had earned enough to move out on her own, she did so without a second thought. She hung back near the entrance, making sure the door was locked and bolted, each twice, because she had no idea what to say or do.
The silence, however, was driving her mad. "I keep one of those single-coffee makers. Do you want a cup? I have tea too." She was already rummaging through the drawers, trying to find the mugs and pods. It was anything to give her hands something to do.
