Garrett wasn’t usually surprised by things. Even when he didn’t know something was coming he usually had enough signs for things to click into place once all the pieces came together. Not this time. No. No amount of precognitive bullshit could have prepared him for the fucking hippo.
He watched the scene for a moment before backing away, running down the hall toward his room. He hadn’t seen Eli, and knowing the guy as well as he did, he figured that he was blissfully oblivious to the chaos happening around them. That was what he was hoping, at least. Because if he was out there, Garrett was never going to fucking find him.
The universe did him a favor for once. ”Hey,” he let himself in, shutting the door behind him. He made sure he had Eli’s attention before continuing. ”Riot outside. Everyone’s going bat shit. Like fucking Lord of the Flies but with hippos.” Yeah, he knew how to paint a picture.
”We’ve probably got.. I don’t know.. two minutes before this hallway’s packed. You still want to get out of here?” Because if he did, this was the closest they were going to get to a chance to do that. And if he didn’t, they were barricading the fucking door.

Eli looked up right away, surprised to see Garrett because while they spent quite a bit of time together they usually didn't visit each other in their rooms. He put down the book he was holding, giving the guy his attention. Riot outside."You didn't just say riot," he muttered incredulously, standing up.
Two minutes? That wasn't any time to prepare.
"Yea," he said, scrambling to grab a bag and put a few things in it. He didn't own a lot, but what he did own had sentimental value.
Like that stick of black eyeliner that Sophie had picked up in the market.
"Let's go," he said to Garrett, getting out the door quickly before they lost their chance.

”You didn't just say riot.””Yeah, don't you wish you sucked at reading my lips.” Garrett muttered. A riot hadn’t been what he wanted to deal with today either. He felt kind of stupid when Eli started packing a bag, not having though to grab anything himself, and there was no time now.
Whatever. It wasn’t like any of his possessions were going to do them much good.
He followed Eli back out into the hall, staying close to the younger man and grabbing his arm when he heard commotion around the corner. ”You want to do that thing where you incapacitate everyone in the immediate radius?”

Yeah, don't you wish you sucked at reading my lips. Yea, a little, honestly. "Great," he muttered. A building full of angry, violent people with little to no control over their special powers in a panic? Sounded like a great place to be.
You want to do that thing where you incapacitate everyone in the immediate radius? He sighed dramatically. "Cover your ears."
He couldn't do as much as he'd have been able to off of drugs, but it was enough to clear the immediate path down the hall. He lightly pushed Garrett forward, wanting them to hurry because he couldn't hold everyone still for long. He did stay close to the guy because he wasn't a fan of running blindly, not being able to hear anything up ahead.

”Cover your ears.” He did, but he still cringed at the sound. ”Good news, now neither of us can hear.” he muttered. Continuing his good luck streak, he was used to having a pounding headache and he managed to push through the disorientation of it.
They were contributing to the chaos now, he knew. People were hurt and afraid, lashing out with their powers intentionally.. or unintentionally. And he couldn’t fault any of them for it. As they moved, a light bar in the ceiling behind them shattered, raining sparks.
Yup, that was what they were missing right now. A fire hazard. He really shouldn’t have turned around to look at it— he could have enjoyed four seconds of blissful ignorance before people started pushing and shoving to clear the hall. ”Eli?” He looked around for the guy, who was… not there. Well.. fuck.
