ophelia gloriana ramirez
the basics
full name ♦ Ophelia Gloriana Ramirez Castillo nicknames ♦ Fi, Felia age ♦ seventeen birthday ♦ october 31st, 2001 occupation ♦ barista at the Quarter Cafe school ♦ Attended Primrose Academy from 15-16, 16-17 she was homeschooled, currently attending Phalanx. species ♦ human ability/power ♦ sound manipulation how the ability works ♦ Ophelia has the ability of sound manipulation. She is able to tap into sound waves and convert it into kinetic energy. She can use this to push or destroy items when she is able to focus on it. An example would be, she could take people talking into a room to knock them all into the surrounding walls. This ability is limited by how loud the noises are, how focused she is, and her emotions. If Ophelia is angry or annoyed, she requires much less concentration and much less noise to create damage. If she is having a good day and has a positive state of mind, she is able to control her ability better and she can have better control over what happens.
Due to her age and her lax feelings on actually gaining control over her ability. She will often have to remove herself from loud situations to prevent accidentally hurting someone or herself. Loud surprised noises will often result in accidental harm to anyone who scares her or anyone in the proximity. Ophelia accidentally hospitalized a Primrose student when she was given a surprise party that really did the trick.
Using her ability too much will lead to bouts of temporary sensory deprivation and migraine headaches. The last time she used her ability too much in one day, she was blinded and mute for three days. Ophelia fears the drawbacks of her ability and will go to extreme lengths to keep herself from harming others. There have been times when she would rather harm herself than someone else with her ability and had knocked herself into walls or out windows multiple times.
gender ♦ cis-female; she/her pronouns sexuality ♦ questioning her sexuality
the appearance
face claim ♦ Isabella Gomez height and weight ♦ 5'6, 120 pounds identifying features ♦ thick rimmed glasses, a stick and poke tattoo of a smiley face on her pelvis, some cuts from accidents from her ability. overall appearance ♦ Ophelia is average height and thin build. Ophelia is Colombian-Cuban, leaving her with fair skin and dark hair and eyes. Ophelia needs thick rimmed glasses for her horrible eye sight, but will at times use contact lenses when she wants to spend more time playing with her makeup. She likes to play with colorful lipsticks, and can do a cat eye sharp enough to kill a man. She enjoys clothes and fashion, and believes it is one of the worst habits that she picked up during her time at Primrose. Typically Ophelia can be found causing mayhem in Phalanx (her favorite being science experiments gone wrong and usually involve a bag of flour). She is sometimes described as a manic pixie and her tendencies for pranks and public chaos only add to that.
the personality
likes ♦ + cooking, any time she can bless the gringos at Phalanx with her arepas, is a blessed day + music, her abuela and abuelo would blast music on the weekends at her home, and she will sometimes crank it up to feel closer to them + science, Ophelia has a natural talent for science and a passion for it. + girls, this is a hidden like. Ophelia has started questioning her sexuality and how girls would fit into that.
dislikes ♦ + cats, too many times her abuela told her that they would steal her soul, so it's hard to shake + Friends, the show, not the people. Ross is horrible. + "getting stuck" between the languages she knows. Nothing like speaking English and busting out Spanish grammar + Taco Bell
strengths ♦ + highly intelligent, she has a knack for math and science + fun, she is able to make a lot of situations more fun and she is fun to be around
weaknesses ♦ + her temper and her lack of remorse for it. "I am Latina, I'm not loud I'm just passionate, so bite me!" Is often heard during arguements + scatter brained, she will get on trains where she is hyperfocused but then will forget about basic human skills (showering, eating), but sometimes when it comes to homework, she might forget to do it for days on end even though she knows the answers
dreams ♦ to be at the head of a bio-engineering company that will be able to manufacture abilities fears ♦ she'll be kicked out of Phalanx too and will lose all ties to her community overall personality ♦
The Daughter
Ophelia is a questionable daughter. While she wants to make her parents proud of her, she also struggles with a lot of the pressures they've put on her. She is meant to be the oldest child, the responsible one, the one who would never get into trouble and set a good example for her younger sisters. She does want to work hard and make her parents proud, but she also has too much fun being a piece of havoc to put too much work into being good all the time. When her parents visit her at school (Primrose or Phalanx), she tries to be on her best behavior but often feels like she is more authentic with herself when she is away from them.
The Student
Ophelia is a good student. She studies hard, will often go to extreme lengths to study. Before big exams, she's usually cramming until the final moment. Flash cards, high lighters, it looks like she could buy out office supply stores with her post-it notes. She gets good grades, but sometimes she will get distracted by other things. If she knows the material, but wants to be there for a friend in need, she'll put off the assignments. She answers questions in class, sometimes a little too excited about it, but will also make jokes. If she has a friend in class who is having a bad day, she'll blow off class with them for time exploring the city.
The Friend
Ophelia is a good friend. She will do anything for people she cares about. While she strives for academic excellence, sometimes class has to be skipped to be with someone who needs the support. She is fiercely protective over the people in her life and will do anything for them. If someone she cares for is hurt or upset about something, she will go to great lengths to make them happier. There are times when she is insecure about her friendships and with some self-reflection she is curious if she puts on a prankster front so people will care more for her. Being a military brat meant moving around a lot and making new friends was sometimes hard for her.
The Hooligan
A prankster extraordinaire! Ophelia loves using her knowledge of math and science to make her pranks happen. Her favorite is making bombs out of flour bags and causing chaos in the house. She has a special connection with her science teachers at Primrose and Phalanx, but she is sure that she makes them roll their eyes. She wants to be in the bio-engineering world and work to create a way to artificially create abilities in people.
the history
father ♦ Lucas Hernando Ramirez Garcia, 56, Navy admiral mother ♦ Ana Maria Ramirez Castillo, 54, current homemaker siblings ♦ ___ ___ Ramirez, 16, Primrose Student ___ ___ Ramirez, 13, no abilities. important people ♦ She's Latina, the amount of tios, tias, primos and more are mighty. hometown ♦ military brat, so had hometowns around the world. Ramirez House Rules
Rule one: Spanish in the house, Host Language outside
Ophelia was born on a naval base in Spain. Her father an Admiral in the United States Navy, her mother a Cuban-American novelist. In total she's lived in four different countries before she was thirteen. Her early life was spent in Spain, then Japan, then Greece, then Italy, and finally United States with Louisiana. The result of all of the moving? Ophelia can speak Spanish, Japanese, Greek, Italian, and English. The first Ramirez family rule is that when inside of the home, she would only speak Spanish. Her parent's way of making sure that she kept in touch with her Colombian-Cuban heritage. When outside of the home she was taught to respect the culture of where she lived. Four years of being surrounded by a language and the people, helped her pick up on language very quickly. Her favorite home was by far Greece, and she misses cliff jumping into the sapphire blue waters.
Rule two: honor mami and papi at all times
The first time Ophelia got in trouble with her parents was when she was eight and she learned how to talk back to them. She was dealing with some of the first signs of her ability, feeling overwhelmed with her senses. Everything was too loud in the room and her sisters were screaming and playing and having fun. She knocked them both over, trapped them under a laundry basket and sat on it with pillows over her ears. When her mami found her, she yelled at Ophelia for trapping her sisters and attempted to discipline her with her mighty chancla and Ophelia screamed and told her mami that she hated her. When her father got home, she told him that she hated him too and wouldn't stop yelling it. She was so overwhelmed with the noises that even she was making, she couldn't be consoled by her parents. According to family legend, she shook the whole house. The truth not too far off from it. She ended up apologizing for her behaviors and to her sisters, but she never forgot how hard it was to cope with all of that noise. No regrets on trapping her sisters, she did that until they no longer fit in the laundry basket.
Rule three: school will always be more important than friends
Going to school on base was always difficult, there were all other military children and there was a social hierarchy to it. Since her father was a high powered member of the Navy, she was often subjected to fake friends who would just want to get closer because of her family. After some friendships that went sour, she just gave up on trying to make friends and focused on her school work instead. When she did meet good friends off base, her parents rarely approved of them. She would try to spend time with them, they would insist she had more homework to work on. Sleepovers? "No Ophelia, you have flashcards to do." No one was ever good enough to be close friends with, and led Ophelia to learn how to be sneaky about where she was going and with who. When she got to Greece, she was pretty good at it, and by the time she got to Italy, she was a master at it.
Rule four: no alcohol or drugs, papi has access to Gitmo and is not afraid to use it.
When she was thirteen, Ophelia was living in Italy and started to experiment with drugs and alcohol. She was out with her friends in Rome, she got drunk on cheap wine and she smoked weed and tried painkillers. It was the first time she ever felt completely out of control of her body, and it was there where she had her first show of her ability. Her first sign that she was weird. They were dancing around and drinking, and she swore that she could feel the energy around them. The music was loud, people were dancing and singing. She was reaching for another swig from a bottle and it flew away from her. Every time she tried to grab a bottle, it was shot away from her. Her friends thought that it was funny, and she was terrified about what was happening. The next morning she went home and told her parents what happened. Of course wine was replaced with grape juice, technically not a lie she told herself. Her parents didn't know what to do with the information so they insisted that she was mentally ill. Thankfully, the counselor they sent her to had an ability to read others gifts and explained to her that she wasn't weird or ill. She was special.
Rule five: no tattoos or piercings until 30
After that meeting with her counselor, Ophelia went back to spending time with her friends. She told them what was happening and how she was something amazing. They believed her and they were happy for her. To celebrate the event, they helped her with a stick and poke tattoo on her pelvis of a happy face. The idea was that no matter what happened when she told her parents about the ability, she would be able to find a way to smile about it. They knew her parents were hard-asses, so they wanted to do this for her. Her parents still don't know about it and while it's mostly faded, she has a promise to herself to get it re-done when she is old enough. When she got home, her counselor was there and explained everything to her parents. Hearing it from a professional, they were able to learn about Primrose Academy.
Rule six: lights out by eight. eight thirty on weekends.
The flight from Italy to Louisiana was incredibly long. Not nearly as many hours as the flight to and from Japan, but mostly felt longer cause of the anticipation. First week at Primrose was filled with insecurity and fear over nearly everyone there. She would stay up at all hours exploring the school and meeting new people. Some with incredible abilities, some with abilities that just terrified her. it was okay, cause her abilities scared people too. When she got settled and made some friends, there were late night parties. Sure she would fall asleep in her classes, but she had friends. None closer than Naomi Marie Torres. They bonded over being international students, they would raid the kitchens to make snack foods that would make their grandmothers weep in joy. She had friends, she was happy.
Rule seven: all chores will be completed on time and held to Naval inspection standards
Her room was a trash pit from the times hanging out with her friends and her roommate. Having fun with her friends, and the messy room kept her from realizing that her roommate was planning a huge surprise party for her in Primrose. With piles of clothes everywhere, it was easy to hide the streamers and the receipts for party supplies. From what she heard after, there were stockpiles of alcohol under piles of clothes and to this day she had no idea. The party was in full swing in the library at Primrose and when Ophelia walked into the library and heard the screams, she lost control over her ability. She shot seven of her friends back into a wall, she broke a window, and there was glass everywhere and people got hurt.
Rule eight: respect for all authority. Yes sir, No sir. Yes m'am, No m'am, always.
Her parents got called to the Headmistress' Office and she was expelled from Primrose Academy. Her father tried to bribe, her mother cried, Ophelia might have had some choice words for Headmistress. She pleaded that it was an accident, she swore that it was what she came to Primrose to gain control over. She might have cursed her out in Spanish, Italian, Japanese, and Greek. Some of it mushed together. Her parents brought her back to where they were stationed in New Orleans and tried to come up with a plan for her. Ophelia was miserable. For a year they researched and finally found Phalanx House. They set up an interview for her and she was able to move into the house. Her parents gave her warnings that this would be the last chance for her, and she knew that they would be serious about it. She was accepted after the interview and moved into a room with Mary Magdalena Sutton.
Rule nine: no boys.
And moving in with Mary Magdalena Sutton lead to some confusing thoughts. Ophelia started to get some feelings for her roommate. She would get flustered when she would spend too much time with the other woman. She made friends, some of who she started to think were beautiful. She didn't know how to cope with the feelings and tried to focus on being around more boys and exploring that realm. She would go out with friends, flirt with boys, but still feel attracted to her roommate. Ophelia has not come to term with these feelings and is still just mostly keeping away from spending too much time in her room to avoid spending too much time with her.
Rule ten: when outside of the home, all house rules still apply:
Ophelia has been living at Phalanx for a few weeks, making friends, and mostly causing havoc in the home. She loves to use science and her intelligence to have fun and spend time with her friends.
