Malcolm Reed Gallagher
the basics
full name ♦ Malcolm Reed Gallagher nicknames ♦ Mac, but mostly prefers Malcolm age ♦ Thirty birthday ♦ December 24th, 1988 occupation ♦ NOPD Homicide Detective school ♦ public high school in central New Orleans, LSU alumni with BS in criminology. species ♦ skinwalker ability/power ♦ skinwalker how the ability works ♦ Malcolm is a skinwalker, meaning he is able to change parts of his appearance at will. With a good amount of concentration, he is able to go at most 12 hours while taking the form of someone else. During this time he is able to take on some of the mannerism of the person he is impersonating, but he is unable to access the memories of the person who he is impersonating. Changing into another person is a fairly fluid and simple process for Malcolm, but afterwards the physical impacts on his body is difficult to cope with. An example would be if he takes the form of someone much taller than him, he might have painful knees for hours after the change back. If he takes the form of someone with body modifications, he might have lasting impression of the body modification for some time afterwards. If Malcolm keeps the form of someone else for too long, then he experiences moments of dissociative states. He will have flashes of his past, relive previous traumas, and will be unable to come back into his present state for varying amounts of time. His dissociative episodes usually look like him just staring off into space for time, sometimes yelling out randomly. gender ♦ cis-male; he/him/his pronouns sexuality ♦ demisexual
the appearance
face claim ♦ Matthew Grey Gubler height and weight ♦ 6'1, 130 pounds identifying features ♦ wears glasses (mostly when he's running behind in the morning),and he has some scars from police training overall appearance ♦ Malcolm is very tall and very thin, he is often spending a lot of time crouching over case files or working in the field to try to solve a case. Malcolm keeps his chestnut brown hair a little longer on the top than a lot of other detectives, but it's a style that works for him. Malcolm's hair is naturally curly and some mornings he wakes up looking like he stuck his finger in an electrical socket. Malcolm had brown eyes, and sometimes wears his glasses. If he has enough time in the morning, he'll wear his contact lenses. When he's working hard on a case, or using his skinwalker ability too much, he'll often default to his glasses. Malcolm usually has a little scruff on his face, another clear sign if he's doing enough to take care of himself. Malcolm typically dresses in casual suits for work, but more comfortably on the weekends. He enjoys spending time outside, and will often be reading in parks, or working on a car in his driveway.
the personality
likes ♦ + rain, will often pull up videos of thunderstorms when he can't sleep + animals, after his engagement ended he adopted a dog from the humane society. + gumbo, he loves all spicy food and has a crazy high tolerance. + reading, his favorites are autobiographies and historical fiction
dislikes ♦ + mushrooms, super allergic + salmon, just doesn't like it + his ex-fiance, their relationship had a horrible ending + candy, too sweet
strengths ♦ + high intelligence, uses this to help him solve cases + loyal, to his brother, to his department, to helping others
weaknesses ♦ + stubborn, he hates to admit when he's wrong + prideful, refuses to accept help from others
dreams ♦ - to reunite with his brother and to have a close sibling bond fears ♦ - finding Cam dead overall personality ♦ Malcolm is an extremely loyal and kind person. He would do anything to help those in need, and a lot of that stems from his overall neglect to his younger brother when they were kids. Malcolm had been able to dive into his studies as a way of leaving his family's financial situation, he knew that he basically abandoned Cameron. Malcolm spends a lot of his time and energy into attempting to give back to the community and make things better for those who are going through difficult times. Malcolm can be very short sighted in his work, often focusing deeply on one thing and missing out on the larger picture. For instance he might be so focused on his work, but he would neglect his obligations at home. When the case is finally solved, his power might be turned off because he had never actually paid any of his bills.
During down time, Malcolm enjoys working with his hands and focusing on things that aren't work. He enjoys restoring old cars (anything from the 1940s is his favorite) and exploring New Orleans. Malcolm will sometimes go out to the local bars, but usually keeps to himself. He's not a very outgoing person, and usually needs a friend around to help ease some of the awkward tensions. When Malcolm uses his ability, he will often feel more bold or outgoing since it's someone else's face and he never has to reap the repercussions of his actions. This typically leads to dissociative episodes where he will be very quiet, and unable to communicate. When he comes out of his episodes, he will be hypersensitive to touch, loud sounds, and bright lights.
the history
father ♦ Joseph Gallagher, 52, deceased, miner/president of local miner's union mother ♦ Evelyn Moriello-Gallagher, 47, deceased, grocer siblings ♦ Cameron Gallagher, 23, brother important people ♦ his ex-fiance, Penelope "Penny" Walker hometown ♦ New Orleans, Louisiana overall history ♦ trigger warning: parent death, abortion, and substance use disorder
Malcolm was the first born son of Joseph and Evelyn Gallagher. Growing up, he was closer with his mother, his father's temper often proving the miner to be too unstable to be around. When Malcolm was young, he showed a high intelligence and with that the determination from everyone around him to make something of that gift. By the time his little brother was born, he was excelling in school and reading beyond his years. As they boys grew, Malcolm was determined to keep an eye out for Cameron. The small family lived in a local trailer park, not too far from the buzz of center city New Orleans. Malcolm had a few friends who lived nearby, and of course, he had Cameron. His little brother was the light of his life, helping Cam with his homework, or just watching cartoons together in the living room. The moments where it was just them, it was perfect.
Malcolm graduated high school a year early, and was offered a full ride scholarship to LSU, he already knew that he wanted to be a police officer, but he wanted to do more with that. He also figured that he should have a career on the back burner in case he didn't make it through the academy. He was proud of himself for getting out of the trailer park, but a part of him hesitated when he was packing up to go to LSU. He didn't want to leave Cameron behind. He knew that he would be safe, and that his little brother would be able to reach out whenever he wanted to.
During his freshman year of college, he stuck a high fever. He stayed in his dorm, sweating and practically delusional from the fever. He watched the ceiling while coughing his lungs out. With every wheeze, every muscle fatigue, he started to see weirder things. He would swear that his hand became the same tone as his roommate, a bioengineering major from Kenya. Then his fingers would become long and slender, the same shade of nail polish that he knew his mother loved. When he was finally able to get out of the bed, he realized that he hadn't been hallucinating and was actually looking at a perfect replication of his mother in the mirror. At this point he vomited into the waste basket and began hyperventilating. His mother had been so important to him all of his life, seeing her in his mirror unreal. Looking like her was even worse. When his roommate came back, he was still mostly his mother, clinging to the waste basket and vomiting.
Daniel, his roommate, placed the student hall chicken noodle soup on the desk and helped get Malcolm back into his bed. Daniel, unknown to Malcolm until this point, was a shapeshifter from a long family line of various big cats. Daniel explained that he was a skinwalker and had been born with an ability, like himself. Daniel explained how to keep it a secret, how to practice the changing and how to find other people like him. Malcolm wanted to reach out to his brother and parents about if they knew anything about it, but was encouraged by Daniel not to. He explained that there was a place in New Orleans called Monroeville and sometimes people got thrown in there for having certain abilities. The two became very close, forged by this secret, and stayed dorm-mates until they got a place together off-campus the summer before junior year.
When Malcolm was a junior in college, he met Penelope Walker, the woman who he thought he was going to spend all of his life with. She was smart, beautiful, funny, she liked his weird sense of humor. He thought that there would be no one else for him. That winter break, he brought Penelope to meet his parents and brother. Malcolm was beaming. She was the first meaningful relationship he had and by the time they graduated, he already had plans to ask her to marry him. Malcolm was twenty one when he graduated and wanted to tell his parents first. When he got home to the familiar trailer, his mother had died. It was sudden and the whole family was shook. Malcolm put aside his plans to ask Penny to marry him, and focused on planning his mother's funeral. His father became a shell of his former self, Cameron skipping school and coming back to the double wide smelling of booze and weed.
Malcolm wanted to help his family, but his application for the police academy had been accepted and he was offered a chance to train with them. Malcolm was on the phone with the admissions, declining his spot when his father took his phone from his hand and hung up. Joseph called him an idiot and that he had a chance to make something of himself. Malcolm insisted that he was needed at the home. That he had to be the one to watch out for Cameron. Joseph insisted that he might not be Evelyn, but he was still Cameron's parent and he could also care for the boy.
Malcolm went to the police academy and waved good bye to his dad and brother from his car. That was the last time he would see his father. The police academy took 21 weeks, at week 19, his father died. They all assumed it was a broken heart, and Malcolm rushed back to be with his brother. Penny stood by his side, officially meeting Cameron and his grandparents as Malcolm's fiance. All during his father's funeral, Cameron was clearly high on something. His little brother who he loved so much seemed lost in Cameron's eyes. Malcolm tried to speak with him, and was met with a cold shoulder. Malcolm searched for a position with the New Orleans Police Department, but was ultimately offered a position in Baton Rogue. Malcolm tried to convince his grandparents to let him take Cameron with them, but was denied.
His grandparents insisted that he had to establish his life, that they had a wedding to plan, that there would be plenty of time to send for Cameron, but it made no sense to pull him in the middle of high school. Malcolm swore to himself that he would be back within six months to get Cameron and bring him back to Baton Rogue with him. Malcolm worked hard, helped Penny plan the wedding, but something always came up. About two years into his work as a police officer, Malcolm received a call from his grandparents that Cameron left and they had no intention of searching for him.
Malcolm rushed to New Orleans, spending a week searching the city for his little brother. He attempted to file a missing persons report, but there was little care for a missing seventeen year old with such a long record of run ins with the local authorities. Malcolm felt like he did everything that he could, and put in word with a local house, Phalanx House, to keep an eye out for his brother and to help him if he came through. The man he spoke with, Astor Perona, promised to make sure that Cameron ended up there instead of Monroeville Hospital and helped Malcolm feel even a little bit better about heading back to Baton Rogue.
A big case, a big promotion, he did his best to maintain a balance between his life and work, but his determination to be a good person and help others seemed to create a time jump in his life. The next thing he knew, he was thirty years old, still engaged and a homicide detective.
One morning, Penny shared big news with Malcolm. She was pregnant. At first, Malcolm was elated. He had always wanted to be a father and being a parent with Penny by his side was amazing. Then he remembered, his ability. Malcolm sat Penny down and shared his biggest secret with the woman who he loved more than anything in the world. He shared about the world, about his ability, about how there was a chance that their child could be like him. As long as he had known Penny, nothing could have prepared him for her reaction. He never expected her to give him back the engagement ring. He never expected her to move out of their home together. He certainly didn't expect her to abort the baby.
Penny walked out of his life, screaming that Malcolm was a freak. That he lied to her, that he stole years from her. That he was sick and wrong.
Everything in Baton Rogue reminded him of Penny, of the baby that never got a chance to be, packing up his home was easy. There was little that he wanted to keep. Memories of his brother and parents, a few things, and he was back on the road to New Orleans. Malcolm got a job with the New Orleans Police Department in the homicide department and he's currently working on improving his relationship with his brother.
