Sophie Georgina de la Cruz
the basics
full name ♦ Sophie Georgina de la Cruz nicknames ♦ Soph or Fi — she definitely prefers Soph. age ♦ Nineteen birthday ♦ October 30, 1999 occupation ♦ Unemployed school ♦ Monroeville Hospital — previously at Primrose Academy species ♦ Human ability/power ♦ Sense manipulation how the ability works ♦ Sophie has the ability to manipulate the senses—limited to the typical five—and in rare cases, she can overload one of them. Currently, she just needs to have the person in question in her line of sight in order for her to enhance, dampen, or otherwise change a person’s senses, but usually those are more mild effects. The closer she gets to a person, the more that she can affect their senses, meaning that the most extreme variations of her power require her to be in physical contact with the person. However, the more extreme parts of her ability require an extreme emotional response to trigger them—such as anger, pain, or fear. For example, if she wanted to overload someone’s senses to the point of hurting them, she would need to be genuinely afraid for her own well-being, or angry enough that it would block out any misgivings about her reaction.
There are a multitude of side-effects to her ability, which are mostly physical. The most common one is that she gets incredibly tired, but if she continues to push past that point, she’ll start to get a severe headache. From there, bloody noses are common, and occasionally she will faint as a result of overexertion. She actively tries to not get to that point, as the pain and the exhaustion can last several days to a week depending on how hard she pushed herself. gender ♦ Female | She, hers sexuality ♦ Pansexual
the appearance
face claim ♦ Lauren Jauregui height and weight ♦ 5’4” | 125 pounds identifying features ♦ The only piercings that Sophie has are her earlobes. She does, however, have a litany of scars, including one on her collarbone that she absolutely refuses to talk about. The rest seem to be a random collection of scars from childhood mishaps, despite her wealthy upbringing. overall appearance ♦ Though Sophie stands at an average height, she’s the kind of person who catches people’s eyes. She has a slim build that leans towards curvy, and has intelligent eyes that seem to shift between blue, green, and light brown depending on the lighting. Her hair is long and dark brown, and she will typically wear it down around her face in a long, wavy style, though she will occasionally deal with a half-up style if she can get her hand on something to hold it back that isn’t contraband.
Her dressing style tends to lean towards monochromatic colors, with black being the most typical. She also prefers more form-fitting clothing, but most of her clothes end up on the loose side between excessive wear and repeated washings. There are several people who wonder if this is intentional so she can get more use out of them (it is).
the personality
likes ♦ - Black clothing - Her ability - Singing - Blue popsicles - Dark chocolate - Affection - Deep, intellectual conversations - Reading dislikes ♦ - Liars - Psychiatrists - Scratchy clothing - Feeling afraid - Strawberry flavored anything - Her parents - Small talk - Monroeville strengths ♦ - Intelligent - Genuine - Determined - Hopeful weaknesses ♦ - Temperamental - Blunt - Impatient - Too self-demanding dreams ♦ - To get out of Monroeville - To make a living doing what she loves most—singing fears ♦ - Living out the rest of her days stuck in Monroeville - Hurting someone who doesn’t deserve it overall personality ♦ When it comes to Sophie, a lot of people would say that she’s unapproachable; standoffish, even. However, those who put in the time to get to know her find out that she has a rather vibrant personality, chock full of sass and deadpan humor delivered with a head tilt and a sweet smile. Other than that, she has a tendency to be remarkably blunt; if she doesn’t like you she will not at all be shy about telling you why. This, naturally, gets her in a fair bit of trouble with the orderlies and other people who don’t exactly like her mouthing off to them. Her sense of self-preservation is certainly lower on her priority list than her own pride, which is part of the reason that she refuses to lie to keep herself safe, though she’ll gladly lie for others to keep them from enjoying the same fate that she’s dealt with. Despite the vague sense of being haunted that seems to permeate a lot of the people staying in Monroeville, there’s a part of her that is incredibly hopeful, constantly looking at the silver lining, even if she knows that the situation is futile. This, however, only really applies to other people’s situations, because when it comes to her own, she is ever the pragmatist. She knows she’s not getting out anytime soon, so instead of trying to look for a silver lining in her own life, she helps others see theirs. She also absolutely hates small talk, and vastly prefers discussing the meaning of life and the universe to talking about something as simple as the weather.

Sophie de la Cruz was born to a wealthy entrepreneur and a socialite when they were both in the height of their lives, through truth be told all of the money that they really had was money that they had inherited from their parents, and while Diego certainly worked, everybody in his life wasn’t sure if he did it out of necessity or because he was so bored with his life that he needed a distraction from it. Growing up, Sophie lived in the lap of luxury; she never wanted for anything, all she had to do was ask and she could get anything that she wanted. It was a good and bad upbringing, because if you would ask her if she thought she had a good upbringing, she would have said yes, but as she grew older she became more aware of the problems with that kind of upbringing. Specifically, it manufactured a reality in which Sophie didn’t understand a lot about consequences since, at the early stages of her life, she didn’t really face any. From a young age, she knew that she wanted to be a singer, and her mother had begun providing her with voice lessons that she took to enthusiastically, working on her voice more than she did just about anything else. At age seven, however, she discovered something about herself that she didn’t really understand at first. Her parents had told her that she would likely have an ability of some kind, as they were both gifted with their own abilities, but it was something that she hadn’t really been expecting. One moment, she had been standing there, focusing on a conversation her mother had been having that she couldn’t quite hear, when her own hearing sharpened, and then sharpened again. It was as if someone had finally plugged her headphones into that particular conversation, and she could hear everything. Not that it mattered, the conversation was trivial, it was the fact that she could hear it that she had focused on.
She had told her mother immediately, which meant that her father soon knew. They were all elated, though they encouraged her to not experiment with it too much until she would eventually go to a school that would teach her the limits of her own power. Of course, Sophie was never really one to listen to her parents even at that age, so she began quietly practicing her ability when her parents weren’t paying attention. As far as she could tell, it was only her senses that she could manipulate, but she had been having fun exploring what that meant. When she was fourteen, her parents sent her off to Primrose Academy, where she began to learn to take control of her ability. Much to her surprise, she could not only control her own senses, but other people’s senses as well, and she began experimenting—with express permission and an ability blocker in the room at all times—to see what she could do with the power she had been born with. However, she never really pushed it to the point of pain for anybody. That was not something that she wanted to experiment with by any means. That first year was one of the best of her life, spent exploring her own limits with both her ability and her intellect. For the first time, she felt truly challenged, and it was one of the best experiences she had ever had.
And then her second year at Primrose Academy came. Even at fifteen, she was considered desirable, and one night when she was just hanging out and having a good time with one of her friends, a boy who was two years older than her. That was also the night that he tried to force himself on her. In that moment, she was overcome with a mixture of blind rage and utter terror, and she did the first thing that came to mind. She grabbed onto his shoulder and let loose every inch of her power that she had stored up in that moment, overloading his eyesight. The last thing that she remembered before blacking out was his scream, and the feeling of blood dripping from her nose. When she woke up, she was surrounded by teachers with severe looks on their faces. Apparently, the screams of pain were not an overreaction, but the result of her overloading the boy’s sight to such a degree that it was damaging his corneas, and he was now blind. However, given the circumstances, she refused to feel bad about the situation, and she told each and every adult that was standing there exactly what had happened. It didn’t do her any good, however, since he had learned a thing or two from a corrupt father and had a few people cover for him and outright lie, telling the teachers in question that she had been harassing him instead of the other way around, and that when he rejected her, she hadn’t taken it well. In the end, it was decided that she was the one who was guilty of harming this boy in such a grave way that they recommended she be sent to Monroeville Hospital, a decision that her parents readily agreed with. “For her own safety”, they said.
Over the past four years, she has been attending therapy sessions and working with people to “try to gain control” over her ability. However, during those sessions, all the questions eventually come back to one particularly sticky point: The fact that she refused to say that she had lied about him trying to force himself on her. In her mind, she was already stuck in the hospital for life since her assailant’s father was remarkably wealthy and had no doubt offered a generous sum of money to make sure that she stays where she cannot talk to anybody about what happened to her, but she would not be called a liar as well when she was the one telling the truth. In the past year, however, something shifted. Instead of being complacent, she became a bit on the bitter side, and has since started working on a plan to escape the hospital and run anywhere she can; anything to be free from the hospital that has rapidly become her cage.
