Once he changed his face he remembered that he wasn't with his family, that he wasn't with people like himself who knew and understood what he was. Not everyone was a DuBois and he sometimes forgot that not everyone appreciated having their face taken. He sure that that Lilith wouldn't be too fond that if he really wanted to, if he really worked hard at it and focused on his change, he would be able to tap into her own memories. He would be able to replicate her fingerprints, even her DNA. He grew up on family stories of someone being framed for one of their crimes because of how much his uncle focused on the person. Growing up, Mason thought it was funny. The DuBois family was particularly insular, anyone who wasn't one of them was typically against them.
On baited breath, he waited for what they had to say about it. Lucy's hands on his cheeks, her melodic wonder claiming his magic allowed him to release a breath that he didn't realize he was holding. Lilith and Benji knew what he was, and the what. the. shit. made his grin even wider. Most of the time he felt himself fairly average. He could change his face, but there were so many abilities much bigger, bolder, stranger, than his. He just threatened people finding out about their world. "Yeah, I don't do well with boredom." He said with a laugh, feeling the bones in his face shift back into place.
Mason looked over at Lilith, the way her pink hair fell in her face. The way her eyes sparkled under the horrible lighting in the cafeteria, she was stunning. She was someone who he couldn't wait to get to know more. Even Lucy and Benjamin, but he couldn't help but be drawn to the pink haired beauty. "I make no promises." He stated to Lilith's comment about he and Ben keeping out of trouble. He enjoyed the rush from getting chased by the orderlies and being a force of chaos. He was sure that he could even get Lilith and Lucy involved in some med-cart races.
Mason smirked and bit back a comment about what sort of punishments Benji could have deserved from Palmer. He didn't really know these people yet and while he normally was hard pressed to pass up an opportunity for a sexual innuendo, he wanted to make sure these people could last for him.
The tension passed over them and Mason geared up to hear some weird shit. Some strange ability that wouldn't even be found in the darkest internet or the weirdest comic book series. When Lilith spoke up, he couldn't believe that someone as cool as a grim reaper cotton-candy haired beauty could be sitting with him. "That's so cool." He said looking between Benji and Lilith. "So wait, can you make a skeleton army for her to animate? Even if you can't tell me you can. Don't ruin this dream." He said with probably way more enthusiasm than he needed to have.
Mason looked over at Lucy and touched her hand, "Whatever you can do, I swear you're all the coolest people I've ever met." He squeezed her hand, enjoying how warm and welcoming they all were. They all seemed to care for each other and he just wanted to be part of something as big and beautiful.
He watched Ben's display of his ability and snorted at his description of the awkward boners. "If you ever want more awkward boners, I'm happy to help. Don't need an ability or anything." He teased, stretching his arms over his head.
The new dynamic in this duo-turned-quartet was so lively. By no means did Lucy dislike her time with Lili before, but bringing something new and fresh into the mix – it brought a glimmer to Luce’s eyes that she hadn’t had in a long time. Even if it meant getting into a little more trouble, mainly on Ben and Mason’s part, she would enjoy it. Bask in it. Maybe she needed a little bit more wild in her life.
“Mm, not possible, Lili.” Lucy raised her hand and formed a small fist and lightly knocked on Ben’s head. “Too hard-headed.” She bit her lip, trying to stifle her giggling at her terrible pun. Between the banter from everyone at the table, Luce definitely felt herself relaxing more. Her stuttering wasn’t as pronounced. Her voice not quite as quiet and shy. She was gaining gusto, if only a smidgen at a time. As Lili quietly explained her ability to Mason (it seemed that Benjamin somehow already knew? That or he was completely unfazed by this information), Lucy beamed to her best friend. Mason seemed to take it in stride, making the moment that much sweeter.
When Mason took Lucy’s hand in hers, she was surprised, if only slightly. Generally, most people were put off by Lucy’s constant need for physical affection. It had been explained to her before that it was her ‘Love Language.’ She showed her warmth with touch. Without it, she didn’t ever feel quite real. So, someone else sharing that small affection really brightened her day. Or as much as it could be, already being quite possibly the best day Lucy has had in Monroeville. The beaming smiles and laughs were momentarily interrupted by Ben’s terrible pun.
Lucia groaned and reclaimed her hands from Lili and Mason to bury her face in them. Even with her fascination with Ben’s macabre ability and her fascination with Ben she couldn’t let him slide with that one. “Y-you are terrible.” She complained, though that didn’t sound sincere with the smile on her face and in her voice. Her face was flushed again from the ideation of his comment. Relaxed as she was around Lili and Mason, she still couldn’t take hold of her voice around Ben. The blonde only hoped she wasn’t as transparent as she felt around him.
“I-I can see the future… And walk into walls.” Her attention was turned back to Mason and Lili, the two sitting across from her. If she focused on them, maybe her face would finally cool off. It wasn’t likely, with the object of her embarrassment sitting right next to her, but one could hope.
She felt like she needed to contribute to the conversation somehow. In this roundabout of questions, learning things about each other, it would be natural for her to be curious, but for whatever reason, she couldn’t think of anything. Her mind was blanking. Inevitably, she’d say something stupid to fill the void, it would be cringe-worthy, everyone would laugh and someone else would take up the mantle of initiating conversation flow. Her fidgeting hands made their way back up to the yarn necklace she was wearing, and she began spinning the threads between her fingers again. At this rate she was going to have to get a new string, lest she wear this one out.
“Do you guys have family come to visit you?” Maybe not the best question to ask in their situation, but Lucy felt it was innocent enough. She had known about Lili’s whole situation, of course, but this wasn’t something she had gotten in to with Ben on the rooftop and she certainly didn’t know anything about Mason’s home life. The Lovelle’s lived far away, but they made it a point to visit Lucy as often as they could – she was certain she’d be lost without her family as her anchor. That, and the senior Lovelle’s loved loving people. They’d all but adopted Lili after their first encounter with the then blue haired girl. Now, even if they don't visit as much as Lucy would like, they send the girls gifts in droves. They would be delighted to have more humans to dote on, Lucy was sure of it.

What an odd group the four of them made. They were from all walks of life, a quad of people who just didn’t make the most sense together and yet there was a part of all of this that felt like it was a puzzle finally being put together. There had been missing pieces for so long and as they started to connect and come together, Lilith realized that this was what she had been waiting for all these years at Monroeville. Not that she didn’t adore Lucy; truthfully, if had continued to remain the two girls against the hospital, she would have been more than alright with that, too. But friends, perhaps genuine ones, was something that they had both been severely lacking. People had come and gone, had decided that the girl who saw too much and the girl who danced with the dead were a little too out there to actually associate with. They weren't the type of people that the girls needed in their lives, but Benji and Mason didn’t seem like those type of people.
As Mason said that he doubted the ability to behave, and Lucy echoed it by knocking lightly on Ben’s head, Lilith found herself giggling. ”You’re probably hard,” she concurred. But that didn’t mean that she was going to send them away from the table. Life at the hospital could certainly use some excitement, though she already knew that there was going to be some danger to the way of life that she and Lucy had lived. They weren't bad and they didn’t break the rules - at least not intentionally. There was little doubt in her mind that surrounding their semi-clean reputation with that of the boys was going to offer up some changes that they would have to adapt to.
It sounded fun.
Still, she doubted that either of the boys could come between the bond that she shared with her very first friend at Monroeville. There was something special about that kind of thing that couldn’t be replicated or replaced. As Mason took the news of her ability gracefully, she felt herself exhaling, releasing all of the tension that had built up in her body in just a matter of seconds. She hated telling people what she did. Playing with dead things was weird to them and the way they crinkled their nose and allowed the judgement to fill their eyes was something that made her want to crawl in a hole and hide. Lilith was grateful that Lucy had never been that person. Even as her best friend’s face just about turned pink enough that it could have rivaled Lili’s own hair.
”Bones are actually quite difficult to animate without all of the pieces,” she said, knowing full well that if it were possible, she could have used a skeleton army to break them all out of there. Imagine the praise she and Benji would receive for such an act. Talk about awkward boners.
As Lucy fidgeted, Lili’s eyes sought hers out, smiling warmly and comfortingly. It was a new situation for them both and they would help each other push through every little awkward moment that came up. Another topic arose and Lili found her eyes shifting between Mason and Ben, far more curious about their answers as opposed to giving her own. Her own family didn’t seem to care as much as she would have liked them to, but the Lovelle’s had been wonderful and every time that Lucy got a care package, there was one for Lili, too. If she ever managed to get out of this place, she would do everything she could to show them how much she appreciated them.

at most I'm sleeping all these demons away
It shouldn't have bothered him. It was an innocent touch, little more than a casual caress of the hand. Yet it sent an unfamiliar pang through his chest. He brushed it aside as best he knew how by making light of the situation. "Uh yeah, we're cool. If you weren't aware this is the cool table despite what Lili says." Ben raised his hand and made a poor attempt at covering his mouth, "She says that we're outcasts. I think that's just lowkey for cool."
Ben rolled his eyes and echoed Lucia's laugh as she knocked on his head. Someone was certainly getting bold. Surrounded by Lili, Mason, and himself seemed to bolster Lucy's courage. Her effervescent personality truly showing sandwiched between the three of them. Truth be told, they all seemed to be quite cheery. They seemed to be feeding off of each other. Finally finding what they all had craved for so long, meaningful human interaction.
He should have considered his words when Mason responded to his quip. He should have watched his mouth but it wasn't his nature. "Well, will it really be that awkward?" Ben raised his eyebrow in a sultry manner at the playful flirtation.
“Y-you are terrible.”
Ben flashed a smug grin at Lucy. "Are not, I'm the perfect picture of innocence. A veritable choirboy." He clasped his hands together in false piety before them. He failed to mention that he was at one point truly a choirboy. There were secrets you took to the grave with you. Apparently, wearing a robe and singing hymns ranked right up there with getting beaten by the head of security.
Instead of revealing his secret he silently relished the glow of Lucy's cheeks. It was one of the things he thought was so adorable about her. It was certainly tied with how she tumbled over her words when she was flustered or her quirky sense of humor. He sat there, continuing to wear his triumphant grin as she explained her powers. "And on to roofs," he added for her.
Mason's inquiry about the dual utilization of his own and Lili's powers got his wheels turning. He exchanged a puzzled glance with the other woman and shrugged. "I mean, it's not impossible? It'd take a lot of work, lot of calcium, and a whole lot of food." Ben tapped the tray of food he had been steadily demolishing. He lacked the usual surety that he so regularly flaunted, truly puzzled by the possibility. He failed to delve into the science of his power, not wanting to bore anyone with biological process of creating and mutating excess bone.
The conversation lulled and Ben was lost in thoughts of an undead army. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed the red string draped around Lucy's neck. He was about to ask her what it was before she made the unprovoked inquiry.
His mood darkened at the mention of visitation and he sighed. "My parents live in Detroit and aren't exactly flush with cash. They haven't been out to see me since I got dropped off. They send me care packages though. Usually books or little things. My sister's come down and seen me once or twice. It's been a while though." Ben looked to the side as he tried and recalled the last visit he'd had. Probably sometime before his transformation into Monroeville's most notorious escape artist. Eight months... That was a long time and the Holidays were on the horizon with no indicator that he would get any visitors any time soon.
Mason stretched out, the muscle where he got shot would get stiff when it was rainy out, and being in this part of the south, it happened a little more often than he was comfortable with. Mason rubbed his shoulder, rolling it around to try to get some feeling back into it. "I think Lilith is a pretty good judge of character, but she's not completely in love with me yet, so who knows, she could have horrible taste." He teased, shooting a glance over at the pink haired beauty and gave her a wink to show that he was just playing around. It was incredibly true, but they weren't exactly close enough for that yet.
A human connection between the four of them. They had it before him, and Mason wasn't full enough of himself to assume that he had any significant part of that. He was the newest part of it, but they had something amazing before him. They would be fine without him. Not that he was going to be getting out of there any time soon, his criminal record was enough proof of that. The Monroeville staff just didn't have the guts to tell him that. No one wanted to be the bearer of bad news.
Even in a place as miserable as Monroeville.
Mason grinned when he heard what Lucy's ability held. She could see the future and she could walk into walls. Part of him knew that they had something to do with each other, like the blind fates, but he wanted to believe that she was also just really proud of her ability to walk into walls. "How does that work, Lucy? Just pick a wall and decide, that's the wall I'm going to walk into? it's the real super power at the table." He said with a cheeky grin, he didn't want Lucy to think he was making fun of her, but he wanted to make sure that she was comfortable with some cheeky banter.
"Roofs too? Living on the edge, Luce' I appreciate that." He didn't get up there as often as he wanted, but he was sure with friends like these it was only a matter of time.
Mason grinned at Lilith's insistence that she wouldn't be able to animate the army in the way he's hoping she would and grinned wider at her, "Sometimes when things are harder, makes it more satisfying in the end." He said with a cock of his eyebrow. Yeah, he had it bad for her and that back and forth was becoming his vice in life. He looked at Benji who seemed to be more dedication to Mason's dream of a skeleton army. "See, I would be willing to take the Jasper face again and get us some more food. Or- Or! I could lift his wallet. Get a pizza feast in here." He said with a cocky smirk. Anything to make this dream happen. "Extra extra cheese for the Bennyboy?"
Mason actually shrank a little at Lucy's question about his visits. He listened to Ben's comment about the care packages and books that he gets from his parents. Books. Mason couldn't read all that well and his parents didn't seem to know what to send him or if he would want anything.
"My brothers? Sometimes, when they come through. Our parents are back in Texas I think." He shrugged it off, he loved his brothers more than anything in the world. He literally got shot for his younger brother. Their parents just didn't know how to be around him. "They sneak me in candy though, so hit me up after visiting hours."
“I would like to see an undead skeleton army.” Lucy chirped. She really had a thing for skeletons and bones which seriously explains her gravitating to both Ben and Lili. In her more effervescent dreams, Lucy was a demon queen ruling over an army of the undead. Most of those dreams came after crappy B-list horror movie nights, or telling spooky stories with Lili. Maybe she should keep those ones to herself…
“A choirboy? S-somehow I doubt that.” Though her voice still shook, a broad smile was splayed across her face. The image of a tiny Ben (in her mind he was still covered with tattoos for some reason?) running around and singing off key in his little choir outfit had Lucy in a fit of giggles. She hadn’t laughed this hard in God knows how long. It felt good. Being this open and free.
She shook her head vigorously in response to Mason’s question. “There’s a particular wall in the front office, I-I think there’s an imprint w-where I keep running into it.” Her cheeks were certainly going to be sore in the morning from all of this smiling. Even with Lili, she couldn’t remember the last time she was bold enough to crack a joke so openly. Ben brought up walking on to the roof and Lucy bit back a grin. “That was the first time, Ben!” The blonde insisted, huffing.
The innuendos being tossed back and forth between Ben and Mason was nearly too much for Lucia to handle. Her pink face had turned beet red. When Lili joined, talking about someone being hard, Lucy pulled on her lower eyelids so hard her giant eyeballs might’ve popped out. “Y-you’re all going to hell.” She was so relieved when the conversation turned to their parental situations – she thought she was going to die if the two of them continued any further.
“O-oh.” She responded simply to Ben and Mason’s stories. A familiar pang welt up in Lucy’s chest. She knew what it was like to wish her family visited more often – being from Maine did have its disadvantages. But they tried their best, and they made it to her at least twice a year. They always came bearing gifts – more than enough for her and Lili. Now she would be sure to have Ben and Mason including in that list as well. “I’ll let you know when my family comes. They’ll love all of you.”

As Ben disagreed and insisted that this was the cool table, Lili couldn’t help but roll her eyes. Had she been sitting beside him, she might have even shoved him in a playful manner, but being across from him, she instead opted for the very mature option of sticking her tongue out at him. Surely if anyone knew which table this was, it would have been the two girls that had been occupying it for the last four years - though maybe their hospital cred would increase with the rest of the patients if they saw the girls surrounded with Benji and Mason. Then again, the latter was just as likely to be true. After all
At Mason’s jest, blue eyes flew towards him with a flash of surprise. It was difficult for the pink-haired reanimator to discern just how much of his words had been joking and how much truth might have been hidden within them. She didn’t know him so she couldn’t say for sure either way, but Lilith would have been lying if she were to say that she didn’t want to get to know the skinwalker better. She wanted to get to know Ben more too, but she could already tell that Lucy’s fondness of him was something that spoke to his character. Though Lucy was the type to befriend just about anyone who looked like they might have needed it or who could have been an outcast. The blonde was certainly one of Monroeville’s better people and Lili was grateful to have been able to have her throughout these years at the hospital because there was no way that she would have survived without her.
Lili had difficulty seeing Benji in an innocent light, no matter how much he may have claimed to be saintly. There was something about him that told her that wasn’t the case and she didn’t mind. As someone who played with dead things on a regular basis, it was probably best that she wasn’t friends with someone who was innocent in the most sincere meaning of the word. Her gaze turned towards Lucy at her best friend’s comment about an undead army and she grinned. ”Well, I might be able to figure something out, just for you,” Lilith offered, winking conspiratorially.
It was refreshing to see Lucy so vibrant - and Lili found that he felt it too. Though they were always happy together, there was something about the presence of these two new arrivals to their table that had everything feeling different and new and exciting. She felt comfortable with them immediately, which was something that she didn’t feel as though she had on a regular basis. While she was outgoing and welcoming to people, she didn’t always feel such a connection as she did with Mason and Ben. That was the sort of thing that helped to form a lifelong friendship and it was the thing that she was going to be banking on keeping them together as they continued their mutual existence in this terrible place.
”Pizza is always good, but you shouldn’t risk getting yourself in serious trouble on our account,” Lili said, looking back towards Mason, her brows pulling together in concern. There was just something unsettling about Jasper, no matter how charming and kind he might have appeared to outwardly be. She was grateful for the change of topic though - discussing the main man at the hospital was something that always had feeling like she was talking about something that was taboo and that should have been avoided if she wanted to stay out of trouble.
Lili felt a pang in her chest hearing the stories that Ben and Mason spoke about their own family. Her own family came once in a while, but it wasn’t nearly as often as she would have liked. They were still in the area, which meant that they could have made regular trips, but they always claimed that busy schedules kept them away. Lili wasn’t so sure that she wanted them at the hospital anyway. While her parents weren't cruel, they had been quick to believe that she was dangerous and admitted her without asking her any questions. Lucy’s family had been more like her own than any other and that was something that left her feeling cold and alone again.
Lucy mentioning her family had the smile returning to Lili’s face. ”Lucy’s family is wonderful. They’ve become a second family to me since my time here. My family isn’t shitty, but… Well, they were quick to put me in here, so I guess that says enough.”

at most I'm sleeping all these demons away
Pizza and skeleton armies,
Two subjects that Ben could get behind wholeheartedly. “Oh ho, so we’re really gonna do this? I never considered myself ‘Lord of Skulls’ material but,” Ben rubbed his hands together and flashed a wicked smirk, “I could certainly get used to the idea. We shall sit upon thrones of bone while our minions do our bidding. Monroeville shall rue the day it crossed the unholy quartet that is-”
He ceased his villainous machinations as his saintly demeanor was called into question and he was met with disbelieving eyes. He coughed into his hand and avoided eye contact with the other three. “I mean, oh no we shouldn’t do that. That’s really bad.” He was grateful when Mason drew attention to his own delinquent ways and offered to steal Jasper’s wallet.
“Look, I’m not gonna tell you to break into the director’s office but I’m also not saying don’t do it if the opportunity presents itself.” It had been quite some time since Ben had been able to enjoy quality food and Mason’s offer of extra cheese certainly sounded tempting. In Ben’s book, a nice cheesy slice of pizza certainly sounded worth whatever punishment could be doled out. He doubted that Lucy and Lili shared his sentiment. “Pizza falls under things worth going to solitary for,” Ben added, defending his stance on the subject.
He listened intently as everyone explained their family situations. The subject of family had been coming up more frequently than Ben cared for. Ben’s family wasn’t, to use Lili’s term, shitty. They loved him, he knew that. He just wished that they had visited more often. He understood why they couldn’t though. Between both of them, they could barely afford the cramped two bedroom home on the outskirts of Detroit. What little extra income they had went to his sister’s income and medical bills.
Still, their absence stung. Perhaps it was his own immaturity that made the separation so painful. Looking around the table he could feel the rest of his friends were in a similar situation. Of the lot of them, Lucy seemed to be the clear winner in the family department. At least, that’s how it felt when everyone around her seemed to grow just a bit quieter. Ben looked at his friends and wondered just how their lives had played out that they ended up in here.
He knew a snippet of Lucy’s own story about how she was a danger to herself. He could scarcely see how Lili or Mason’s powers could land them in this hellscape. How could changing faces land someone in Monroeville?
“So, it sounds to me like we’re all getting adopted by Lucy’s family. Hope you’re folks have got enough room for all of us. I don’t do too good with roommates but I guess I wouldn’t mind bunking with Mace. If he’s opposed to it I guess I could stay in Lucy’s room.”
Mason never thought that he would be able to find a place as welcoming as this lunch table. In a place like Monroeville, he knew that it was a oasis in the middle of a literal mad house. People would get dragged off for hours at a time and return without knowing what happened to them.
"Just rule this place with an iron fist, and me and Lucy here will provide all of the chocolate pudding and colorful commentary that you guys can handle." He laughed, knowing that even in a place like this he could offer very little. He could change his face, but he also knew that given his family, he could do a lot more than that. He could borrow some memories from people that he shifted into as well. It was how he was able to get codes to safes, learn how to break open vaults, and where security cameras were.
All very helpful in the lifetime career of heists and robberies, not so much when all he wanted was to connect with friends.
Pizza party, probably on the grounds of Monroeville. It would be easy enough. He changed his appearance to look like Jasper again, his face shifting and moving until the curly haired Englishman sat in front of them. "I would love to provide you merry band of hooligans with pizza. This weekend should be good. Bill it to Monroeville Hospital." He said in a voice that was eerily perfect compared to the original.
"I have plenty of ways to make these things happen. Wouldn't be the first time I've stolen from a locked room before." He laughed as his face shifted back. Ugh. Twice using his ability too close to each other. He felt the uncomfortable lurch in his stomach as the puddling and gruel threatened him to come back with a storming vengeance. He settled back on his own face, hiding the discomfort in his stomach with a goofy grin and knew that it would be easy enough to get pizza for all of them. After all, this was his first chance at real friends and he wasn't going to give that up any time soon.
Mason wanted to show them that he could be a good friend for them. That he could give them something to be happy and want to keep him around. His parents weren't exactly fighting to get him out of the hospital, and while he had his brothers, it wasn't always enough. He wanted to have a family, a real family, and it seemed like he was finally going to have that after two years in Monroeville. "Yeah, I haven't seen my parents since the police tossed me in here."
Skinwalkers were seen as dangerous for what they could do, but an ability like jutting bones out from everywhere seemed like it would be so much worse. He could see why Ben was there, he didn't know enough about Lucy to make a fair assessment, but she did say that she walked into a lot of walls. Maybe she was seen as a threat to herself? Walk into traffic and all of that good stuff.
Mason smirked at Lilith when Ben started to section off who was going to be in what room, "I mean, I would be happy to even share a bed with you Lilith. Make things easier on Lucy's family and all." He enjoyed flirting and being around people, even though a lot of it was talk with very little historically to back it up. He understood what sex was, his brother gave him that talk a long time ago, but he wanted more. He wanted to just have that romantic relationship with someone.
Being able to open up about her dreams and aspirations to be Queen of the Undead with more than just Lilith was terribly exciting for Lucy. Her eyes lit up under the harsh Monroeville lights, beaming from Lili to Ben and just oozing with enthusiasm. “Lord? You can’t be the Lord, I am c-clearly the only choice for a b-benevolent ruler.” Lucy dramatically flipped her long ashen hair over her shoulder – seriously underestimating how long it was and whopping Ben with her locks. “Oh, goodness, I’m so sorry!” She squeaked, pulling down the skin on her face – an expression she did often, which only made her giant eyes look like they’d pop out of her head. The blonde was grateful for the change of topic to pizza, hopefully Ben and Mason plotting would take long enough for the embarrassment to wash off of Lucy’s face. When Mason flawlessly changed his face into the Director’s Lucy watched in awe.
“Mason, that’s so cool!” Lucy whined. Why couldn’t she have a cool power like that? Instead, she blindly played in traffic. “Do me next!” She asked excitedly – with zero regard to her choice of words and Mason’s particular type of humor. Lucy had entirely missed his grimacing face, and didn’t notice his discomfort.
The table was so lively as they talked about snagging Jasper’s wallet for an amazing pizza party. Lucy didn’t quite agree with the sentiment that pizza was worth going to solitary for, but she would do some downright evil things for some tacos in here. Just thinking about the delicious food reminded Lucy of her youngest sibling, Robbie Jude Lovelle. They would do ridiculous things to con their parents into going out for Mexican food when they were all still together. She wondered if he still did that with her other siblings over at Phalanx. Maybe she’d be lucky this year, and she could get a day pass to go out with her family for Christmas. If she did, she’d have to be sure to sneak in some pizza for her new minions friends.
“M-my family is huge. A couple more people won’t make a difference.” Lucy nodded, smiling. The rampant red had finally drained from her face, and she was back to her normal pale hue. Ben’s comment, how he ‘guessed’ he could room with Lucy made her playfully huff. She crossed her arms and gave the bone manipulator a pouty look (which, with her giant puppy dog eyes, was extremely effective). “Y-you guess? You’re s-sleeping on the floor.”
“Y-you’re all hereby i-inducted into the Lovelle family.” Her dramatic announcement was dimmed only slightly by her stutter, something that they’d have to get used to if they were part of her family now.

It would have been a lie to say that Lilith had never considered creating an army of reanimated people and animals to have dominion over. Unfortunately, she knew that it was very much something of a pipe dream and would likely never see the light of day, but she wasn’t going to be the one to rain on Lucy’s parade so soon after it had begun. She wanted to believe that anything was possible and that belief only seemed to be stronger as she found herself surrounded by this new group of people. No one would have ever expected such a dysfunctional group of people to team up together in order to carry dominion over the undead, but that was the beauty in it. There was a sliver of Lili that was more sinister than that she would ever acknowledge, if only because it wasn’t the part of her that she was ever really comfortable associating with.
As Lucy rebuffed Ben’s claims for Lord, the pink-haired girl snickered, attempting to stifle the laughter behind her hand. It had worked, until ashen hair whacked Ben in the face and then she simple broke out into a fit of giggles. It took a moment to get herself under control before she looked between the boys that had joined them and looked back to her best friend. ”I think Lucy and I would be co-Queens and you two can be our allies,” she said, sharing a grin with the other girl. There was little doubt that the two women would be the best for the position, at least Lili thought that was the case. They would need people to support and protect them though and the idea of a fortress made of bone was pretty damn appealing.
Ben’s encouragement to get pizza was not lost on Lili and, as Mason changed his face back into the Director’s, another wave of unease settled over her. It was not so much that he could change faces, it was just that particular one. For a man that was rarely seen, there was something about Jasper Blackthorn that just made her want to turn the other way and pretend that he couldn’t see her. Thankfully, his shift hadn’t lasted long and the grimace that etched onto Mason’s own beautiful face had her reaching a hand out to his, though her gaze jerked towards Lucy and her choice of words. Lili knew very well what her friend had intended and that made it easy to quell the tiny outburst of jealousy that arrived unbeckoned. It wasn’t like Lili had any claim over him, but that didn’t mean that she wasn’t already imagining a very different scenario for her to get into with Mason.
Her eyebrow lifted at Ben’s words, prepared to tell him just where he could sleep when Mason spoke up and mentioned sharing a bed. Her cheeks flushed, battling with the pink of her hair and she was thoroughly silenced by the images that flashed to the forefront of her mind. ”Lucy’s family is wonderful,” Lili boasted, having found herself as an honorary Lovelle so early on into her friendship with Lucy. Her other hand reached out to Lucy’s, offering a warm squeeze as the boys were welcomed into the extended family. ”I guess that means that we’re all going to look out for one another now, if we’re a family.” Lili looked from Lucy to Ben and Mason, wondering if the boys were up to the task that the girls had been on since they had met.

at most I'm sleeping all these demons away
“Pbbbttt,” Ben sputtered as he was struck in the face by the rightful monarch of Monroeville. He wiped his face, pulling away stray strands of golden hair as he gave Lucia an incredulous look. “Well, excuse me your majesties. I suppose Mason and I will assume our proper place as peasants in your glorious empire. Good luck finding another supply of bones and pizza.” Lili’s attempts to assuage Ben’s ego was not ignored. His hand already near his face he rubbed the stubble on his face, intrigued by the prospect. “Hm, allies, most of the perks without most of the responsibilities. I could get used to that idea. I formally request the title of Baron.”
The Baron of Bones was torn from his thoughts of conquest as his only male companion at the table donned the guise of one Jasper Blackthorne. He felt a moment of revulsion and anger pass through him at the sight of the man. Jasper presented himself as being a pleasant and charming individual but no matter how affable he seemed Ben saw him as nothing more than a jailor, his jailor to be more precise. When Mason turned back Ben still felt prickling feelings of hostility along his skin. Unconsciously, his knuckles had engorged with excess mass and the threat of violence.
Mason’s comment stole the fury from him and wrought confusion in its stead. Benjamin blinked and tilted his head to the side picking out two keywords: stolen and police. He was starting to assemble his own hypothesis as to why Mason was locked up in Monroeville. Stealing faces was one thing but larceny was another. Juvie seemed like a better alternative but, with an ability like Mason’s, it hardly seemed like a place that could hold him. That was all just conjecture though.
Lucy’s decree that Ben had to sleep on the floor would have prompted a witty quip if it wasn’t for the look she gave him. The sight of her gorgeous eyes and the pouting lip caused a short somewhere in Ben’s brain. “No,” was the only word he could muster as his eyes lingered on her for longer than they should have. The bone that had accumulated in his knuckles dispersed in his addled state and his heart fluttered. Her boisterous claim roused him from the trance she’d placed him in. He cleared his throat and looked across the table toward anyone who was not the pale girl beside him.
”I guess that means that we’re all going to look out for one another now, if we’re a family.”
Ben thought back to his and Lucy’s first meeting on the rooftop and the punishment that followed. “Oh, I assumed that we were already doing that. You can count on me though. I’ll beat the poop out of anyone that messes with you guys or, at the very least, make them feel bad about themselves.” It was an odd thought, having someone watching his back. For the last year, he’d been alone in Monroeville. He had acquaintances like Eli but no one that he was genuinely close to. It was an odd feeling. He felt protected, safe.
Mason smirked at Lilith when she proclaimed that she and Lucy were the natural leaders of Monroeville. He believed that. He believed that they were fierce warrior queens who had been through too much in their much longer time at Monroeville. “Well lucky for both of you, I am more than happy to bend at the knee for a couple of queens.” he said with a wink towards where Lilith and Lucy were sitting. They were both beautiful, and he was really enjoying knowing that he had friends there. “I’m torn between court jester, and taking the title of Czar of Changing Faces, oh, or Sultan Skinwalker.”
Too many options and good ideas. Too many perfect puns and not nearly enough time. He changed his features to match the director of Monroeville and could see the looks of disgust and tension flash in his new friends eyes. He had to learn early on how to read faces. Read ‘em and Steal ‘em. Had to know when people they robbed were getting the ideas that he was not who he said he was. Mason grinned when Lucy became delighted at his changed face and insisted that he do her next. “While I would never want to deny a lady such a tempting request, I’ll do you some other time Lucy.”
He changed his face back, feeling the threats of the grey gruel and pudding combination threaten to rise up with vengeance. In a place like Monroeville, he wasn’t always encouraged to use his abilities in so many ways. Getting out of practice, not doing everything that he should to keep his ability in tip top shape, it was going to lead to more vomiting. He already knew that was going to happen. He grinned through the green in the gills feeling. He ran his fingers through his dark hair and shot Lucy a smile, “Don’t you worry gorgeous. I won’t be able to resist those doe eyes of yours for very long.”
There were plenty of things he could think of doing in a bedroom with Lilith, and they were all extremely thrilling to consider, but nothing he would want to voice. He caught her eyes and could see the ghost of a blush over her delicate features. She was completely stunning and he couldn’t believe that he had missed her over the last two years in this place. Someone with such bright hair, and with such a sweet smile. “Benny Boy making a play to share the bed. Bold. I like it.” he teased and looked over at Lilith, “You more of a little spoon or big spoon, cause I’m good with either.” He said with a wink.
Have to look out for each other. Take care of one another as if they were family. Mason looked at the three at the table with him, people who were complete strangers one meal ago.
“A family, going to get me all emotional here Benji-baby.”
A family when he finally needed one. “I can’t raise an army of the dead, or get awkward boners, but I can cheer you all on and steal the refreshments. I’m planning on hitting the kitchen at some point for a stash of pudding cups.” he would do time in solitary for the pudding cups. They were like currency in Monroeville and he was going to be a king pin. “I mean I’m good for other things, but I don’t go around broadcasting that. I’m not that kind of girl. At least not always.”
