Wren had done so much towards their relationship, Lyric knew that it was her turn to step it up. The beautiful blonde had been so convinced that Lyric was going to want to hide forever, or that she was going to deny even knowing the siren in public, Lyric knew that she had to do something to prove her wrong. The final bell for Friday classes rang, and she was quick out of her seat. She had a night out with her beautiful girlfriend to put into motion, and she wasn’t about to let Wren down. Lyric waved off some of her friends, promising that she would be in touch, but that she had something important to do. She flushed even thinking about Wren. She was such an amazing beauty, she was everything that Lyric could want in a partner. Someone to make her laugh, someone who made her feel incredibly loved and appreciated.
Now it was Lyric’s turn to make sure Wren felt the same.
She made her way to Wren’s room, making sure to get there before the blonde. She carefully picked the lock on the door, a handy trick that she picked up with some less than savory friends she had back in New York City. With a final growl of frustration, the lock popped open and she was able to sneak a letter onto Wren’s bed.
Beautiful, meet me in the city park. Dress nice. xoxo. She didn’t sign it, the arrogant part of her knew that Wren would know who it was. Another, smaller with each day, part refused to sign it because she didn’t want Wren’s roommate to know who Wren was dating. Not yet, but with each touch from Wren and each smile she was blessed with, she couldn’t remember why.
Lyric left the room quickly, needing to get ready for the date. Lyric gathered up supplies, a blanket, a basket of snacks, everything that would make it a memorable afternoon for her. Lyric smirked, thinking about how they could both make it a memorable evening as well. Lyric dressed and went to the park to set up, waiting for her Wren to show up.
Ah, the weekend. Wren couldn’t wait for that final bell to ring, signifying she was officially free for the weekend. That meant that she could sneak away with her new secret-girlfriend, Lyric Pennbrook. Wren couldn’t wait to see the woman, to wrap herself around her and entangle their limbs together. Since Lyric’s roommate had come back from vacation, they had to be a little bit stealthier with their clandestine meetings.
Trying not to let the whole world know Wren was in a giddy rush, she coolly made her way to the second floor dorms and into her room. As soon as the door closed behind her, the blonde was in a mad rush to change out of her school clothes and something respectable to be ripped off later. In her hurry, Wren nearly missed the letter sitting atop her bed.
‘Beautiful’ it said. Her heart skipped a beat as her natural smile broadened to a full beaming grin. Dress nice? She could do that. The skimpy clothes she was planning on wearing were haphazardly thrown back into her closet as she found a slim-fitting red dress. Even though Louisiana wasn’t freezing outside this time of year, it was pretty chilly to just be wearing a thin-strapped dress, so Wren grabbed her trademark black leather jacket. She paired the outfit with some strappy black heels and eyeliner sharp enough it could kill a man.
The New Orleans City Park was beautiful this time of year. The leaves had already turned and began falling, painting the park in a gorgeous red and orange glow. In the distance, Wren saw a head of familiar scarlet hair and a smile lit up her face.
“Lyric? Damn, and here I thought it was Becky who left that note.” She couldn’t help but tease her new, dazzling girlfriend. Wren wrapped her arms around Lyr’s small waist as she planted a sweet kiss on her lips. “Have I mentioned how beautiful you are?”
When she saw Wren, she could barely contain the smile. They were away from the leering glances of Primrose. Away from the gawking, and whispers, and pointing. They were away from enough people who might know them, and Lyric knew that one day it wouldn't matter. She would just have her Wren and that would be it. She would be able to hold her hand down the hallway, kiss her cheek between classes, and not give a damn who heard what in the middle of the night. It would be the best thing that either of them shared. It would be all that mattered to her.
"Becky, huh? I didn't know you liked them basic." She teased back, knowing that there were no amount of Beckys that would be able to keep them apart from each other. They were too important to the other. They were too much of exactly what the other needed. Lyric craved someone who would put her in her place when it was needed, and Wren needed someone who would keep her by her side. Someone interesting enough to tame that wandering eye.
She wrapped her arms around her girlfriend, pulling the other woman close. She had missed those kisses and craved those lips the whole day. She needed time with Wren like she needed air in her lungs and ice in her veins. Lyric ran her fingers through Wren's blonde hair, unable to even think of all of the reasons why she was still firmly in the closet during that perfect moment that sheltered both of them. "Nope, you might want to get better about that or I might be calling Becky." She teased back, reaching up on her toes to place a gentle kiss on Wren's nose, being careful of her lipstick.
"Now, do you want to go find Becky, or do you want to have dinner with me?" She asked, motioning towards the checkered blanket that she set up for them. There was a movie that was going to play in the park, and she figured what could be better than a movie, a dinner, and some making out under the stars. She sat down on the blanket and poured Wren some hot chocolate, always nervous that after everything, Wren would grow bored with her and go run off for someone else. They joked about it, but she knew deep down that she would be destroyed if there really was another woman who Wren wanted more than her. She would be crushed if Wren couldn't wait any longer and decided that someone else made her happier.
Lyric didn't like sharing and she definitely didn't like losing what she wanted. She wanted Wren and she was going to do anything she could think of to keep her blonde girlfriend by her side.
Wren loved the time she spent with Lyric outside of school. Away from wandering eyes and prying ears. Away, they could be themselves. Wren just hated that they had to wait for the weekends to do it.
“I’ll have you know Becky is a very nice lady.” Wren grinned. She was glad Lyric could take the jokes, and spit them out just as well. Her last girlfriend was not too fond of the ‘Becky’ shtick. It was just another thing to the ever-growing list of stuff that Wren adored about Lyric. They were just really terrific for each other.
A hum thrummed in Wren’s throat as Lyric’s hands ran through her hair. Hair play was one of Wren’s many weaknesses. “If you keep playing with my hair like that I will worship you with every last breath in my body. Fuck Becky.” She managed to mumble with her eyes closed. The light kiss placed on her nose pleasantly broke her from her reverie. Right. No sleeping, they were having a date – their first date. Wren beamed at her goddess.
She claimed a seat on the blanket after removing her shoes – the danger of them punching a hole through the fabric was too real. After settling in, the blonde finally took in the entirety of her surroundings. The blanket, the hot chocolate, the picnic basket, all on a beautiful fall day in the park. A movie was about to begin on the large screen set up in the distance. It was nice. Touching. No one had ever done something like this for Wren. She bit her lip as her eyes began watering – oh god why was she tearing up? We are not ruining this eye makeup today, no way. Pull it together, Holloway. She attempted to blink away the moisture before facing her woman.
Placing a hand over Lyric’s free one, she spoke with a slightly cracking voice. “This is really sweet, Lyric. I mean it.” Up until this point their relationship had been spontaneity and fire and lust, which by no means was Wren opposed to, but this was different. This was heartfelt, and Wren wasn’t 100% sure how to respond to it.
"Becky is a homewrecker." Lyric stated in a flat dead pan way, she loved being able to mess with Wren and knew that the blonde would never take it too seriously. She could hoot off some callous comment, she could be snarky, or any of her other annoying habits that would try to keep people away and Wren would still be there. She always had boyfriends who would take it too personally, who would call her a bitch and she would break up with them. She couldn't resist Wren, and she knew that the relationship meant too much to her to give up.
Lyric smirked when Wren melted into her arms. She loved having her tall Amazon gorgeous woman so weak for her. "pfft, as if you weren't going to already." While she liked to believe that Wren would be there for her forever, she always knew that deep down she was terrified of losing the other woman. She was terrified that someone else would come in and show Wren the type of love that Lyric just couldn't give her yet.
Showing her the blanket, Lyric sat down with her girlfriend. She wanted to do something so much more for Wren, something that would blow all of her past relationships out of the water. Lyric just hoped that it wasn't too lame for Wren. She just did what she had always wished the meat heads she dated would have done for her. "You like it?" She asked surprised. Lyric kissed Wren softly, running her fingers through Wren's soft blonde hair.
The movie was about to start, and Lyric poured her some hot chocolate. "There are beignets in the basket, some sandwiches too."
“I love it!” The words spilled out of Wren’s mouth before she could even attempt to stop them. Wren just oozed cool. She inwardly groaned at her over-enthusiastic response. The bubbling happiness inside Wren’s chest was just too much to keep inside. Overcome by affection, Wren grabbed her woman’s hand and pulled her in for a passionate kiss. Fuck anyone who was watching them, this was their moment. Their beautiful moment. For a second, Wren considered just stealing Lyric away to share their affections in some expensive hotel room, but she quickly thought better of it. Lyric went through all this trouble to put their date together, to melt Wren’s little heart, and she wasn’t going to lost this moment because she was horny.
After smoothing her clothing and steadying her heartbeat, Wren accepted the hot chocolate from her beauty. Nothing could wipe the goofy grin from her face. “Beignets too? I’m going to keep you around for a long time, Pennbrook.” Instead of fervently kissing on her woman and giving the whole park a show, Wren settled on another sweet peck on the cheek. Her red lipstick had smudged off on to Lyr’s face which left Wren in a giggling fit. Thankfully they were both wearing killer red lipstick, the smudging on their lips wasn’t terrible.
Still smiling, Wren sipped on her hot chocolate. The movie began, leaving most of the people in the crowd focused on whatever was playing. The blonde tried to pay attention, but she couldn’t concentrate while she kept stealing glances at the red-haired vixen of a woman. She rested her hand on Lyr’s thigh, claiming the spot of bare skin showing through the torn jeans (she loved that Lyr still got to wear sexy clothing during the winter). Her cold skin under Wren’s palm still electrified the woman. Wren hoped that never changed between them.
Hearing how much Wren liked it, she was practically buzzing with electric energy. She wanted to shower Wren with love and attention, she wanted to show Wren that she was all Lyric thought about all the time, and she would show her everything that she deserved. That she was the person who Lyric thought about most, and she was the only one who Lyric wanted. No one could have made her happier in the park. She wanted to tell Wren that she loved her. It was burning on the tip of her tongue. It was frosty and tingled and made her want to throw the words between them, but she knew it wasn't fair. It wasn't fair to toss them out and expect Wren to say it back after so short amount of time. They were two people who loved each other, but they hid the words behind Lyric's closet door.
"I hope you do, Wren Holloway." She said back, kissing Wren's cheek. They were really going to have to invest in some smudge proof lipstick, or try to figure out how to go without. Keeping her hands to herself, wasn't really an option. When the movie started, Lyric moved so Wren was between her legs and pulled Wren close to herself. She wrapped her arms around Wren's frame, resting her chin on Wren's shoulder as they watched the movie. She didn't know anything about Gone with the Wind other than the iconic frankly my dear, I don't give a damn line.
Lyric ran her fingers through Wren's hair and nuzzled her neck, enjoying the touches and connection that they had. Wren was the woman of her dreams, and she wasn't ready to wake up from it. The frigid electricity between them shook her, and it was something that she was going to always crave. Being in the closet hurt, but she knew that when she came out it was going to be as glorious and perfect as Wren. Everything that Wren deserved from someone who cared about her as much as Lyric cared about her.
"I want you to always know that I'm yours. No matter what. Me and you? This is all I want." She said in Wren's ear, squeezing Wren slightly. She couldn't believe how much she cared for anyone the way she did Wren. It drove her mad, and she was so happy. "I think you're going to be the love of my life, and that scares me in all of the best ways Wren."
Wren had no earthly idea what was playing on the screen, she couldn’t be bothered with cinematic fantasy when her dream was sitting right beside her. The pawing at each other, the sweet kisses and whispered sweet nothings. It was all too perfect. She was perfect. Sitting between Lyric’s legs, having the woman run her fingers through Wren’s blonde hair, the woman thought she was in heaven. She closed her eyes and hummed underneath Lyric’s touches. She nearly missed the redhead’s words whispered into her ear over all of her elation. Her heart nearly stopped.
“I…” Wren wasn’t 100% sure how to respond. Of course them being together was what she wanted. Wren hadn’t ever felt this way for someone, but that was somehow terrifying for her. What if Lyric left her? Would she survive that heartbreak? She felt her heart catch somewhere in her throat. “I don’t ever want you to leave.” She admitted in a small voice. Wren was beginning to realize just how devoid of affection she had been. Perhaps she’d been making up for that with one night stands and random flings, but she was terrified of the fact that someone might be around to stay.
“Lyric, I’m terrified.” She looked up into her lover’s deep, brown eyes. They were like melted milk chocolate, swirling with little golden flakes. Wren found herself getting lost in them. She was hoping Lyric couldn’t see just how scared she was in her own. "I don't want you to leave me."
Rolling on the blanket, fingers in each other's hair, smeared lipstick (why did they still both insist on wearing it?) and Lyric was happy. When they settled with Wren in her arms, leaning back against her. They were together and they were happy and Lyric couldn't have thought of anything as perfect for them. She felt the tension in Wren when she spoke to her, and she felt that maybe she crossed a line. This was their first date and she was saying things that made it sound like they were in love. She was feeling it, but she wasn't going to say it. She just felt horrible that after everything they had been through together, she felt it.
When Wren finally spoke, Lyric wrapped her up tighter. Lyric nuzzled into Wren's neck from behind and kissed her neck and shoulder. She cared so much for Wren that she had the same fears. She had the fear that one day Wren would get bored of her, that she would find someone else, that she would want someone new who was willing to be out and proud for her right away. She wanted to be that for Wren, but it was hard. She kissed Wren's cheek softly, wanting to give her girlfriend any sort of affection and touch that she could.
"I'm yours. I'm-" She took in a deep breath. "I promise you, I'm going to come out before the end of the year." She wanted to give herself a deadline. Something strict that would show Wren that they were together and they were going to make it work. "I'm going to start with my family, but then I'll come out to everyone." She promised, running her hands over Wren's cheeks and kissing her softly. "I won't leave you."
“The end of the year?” Wren wasn’t quite sure she heard her girlfriend right. That wasn’t very far away, a little more than a month. Could Lyric handle that kind of pressure? Of putting that time limit on herself? What if she wasn’t ready? Wren lifted her hand to run her fingers through Lyric’s fiery hair. “You don’t have to do that, gorgeous. I don’t want you to feel… Pressured. Into coming out for me. I want you to do it when you’re ready, not because you think it’s what I want.” Sure, she hated having to hide from everyone in Primrose, but she knew it came with the territory. She’d wait a million years for Lyric though.
The blonde nuzzled closer to her vixen. A devious hand made it underneath the fabric of her girlfriend’s shirt, lightly grazing Lyric’s slightly cooler skin. Her nails softly swept over the parts of her body that Wren could reach. Her intentions weren’t initially to give everyone in the park a show, but oh how did she love to see her girlfriend wriggle underneath her touch.
“Then I won’t leave either. You’re stuck with me, Pennbrook. For better or worse.” Though there was still fear deep inside of Wren’s chest, but Lyric’s words of assurance and gentle touches assuaged the better part of it. The siren was certain that if she died in that instant that there was no better way to go than wrapped in Lyric’s arms and affections. This was all Wren wanted in her life. To be loved. And she felt that from Lyric, even if the two of them weren't ready to admit that to themselves just yet.
