Charlotte Rae Devereaux
the basics
full name ♦ Charlotte Devereaux nicknames ♦ Charlie, Char, Charlie Rae age ♦ thirty-two birthday ♦ August 23rd, 1986 occupation ♦ Psychiatrist school ♦ Monroeville, was "released" for college and grad school species ♦ Human ability/power ♦ Memory Manipulation how the ability works ♦ Charlotte has the power to manipulate people’s memories. She is most adept at pulling old memories out and “locking” them up, creating either black holes or supplementing them with stock memories. While Charlie can sometimes manipulate memories in a specific way, this costs a lot of time, energy, and devotion to pull off without a hitch. People with higher-based mental powers, particular those that focus on reading or manipulating the subconscious (dream manipulators, telepaths, some strong empaths, other memory-based powers), may be able to tell the “edges” of fake memories or unlock memories from the vault. Be warned: she is prepared for this and plans many fail safes. If someone who is not accustomed to Charlie’s power tries to manipulate or unlock them, they could easily end up locking someone in their own memories. gender ♦ cis female, she/her sexuality ♦ Pansexual
the appearance
face claim ♦ Eve Harlow height and weight ♦ 5'7" and unknown lbs identifying features ♦ her light brown eyes are very striking and expressive overall appearance ♦ Charlie stands at a slightly above average five foot seven, and she is neither slim nor curvy nor particularly toned. She reads as rather nondescript in the body, dressing in a professional manner most of the time. Preferring dark clothing that accentuates her dark, curly hair, Charlie does not dress in an overly flashy, over-the-top, or other eye-catching way. She is practically designed to go below the notice of most people (it makes her work easier), but her striking features are the wrench in that. Her dark eyes seem to hold a little bit of wild in them, and her stare can be a bit suffocating if subjected to it for too long. Her full lips and strong jawline would not be considered soft and pretty, but Charlie has no interest in being just “pretty.” She prefers words like severe, striking, odd, perhaps even unsettling if she’s in the mood.
the personality
likes ♦ serving her own interests, Saturday mornings, collecting dolls, dislikes ♦ being ignored, when it is too loud to concentrate, other people talking about her strengths ♦ her laissez-faire attitude makes her appear more charming than she actually is, intelligent and reckless weaknesses ♦ socially challenged, relies way too much on her power dreams ♦ to be on top for once fears ♦ being left alone in the world, having her power turned back on her overall personality ♦ Just like her powers, Charlotte is manipulative. Charlie Rae walks with a certain self-assured way in the world; it is easy to exist with little conscience when you can erase traces of yourself. She chooses to believe she lives a relatively consequence-free life, something that often leads her to destructive behavior when it comes to other people. Nothing matters to her; nothing feels real when she knows that she can make you doubt anything about your life. Charlie walks on the wild side in life and plays everything fast and loose. An over-reliance on her power makes her dangerous, and even as Monroeville “trusts” her, they keep close eyes on her as she wanders the world outside the hospital. Charlie doesn’t mind the security; they are easy enough to slip if she pleased.
Charlie does not have the easy charm of others and relies on brusque conversation than anything else, but the rough edges of her personality have a little bit of an appeal to some. Her social skills are a little lacking, and if she gets too frustrated with building relationships, she might rely on her power to “cheat” the way people feel about her. This never lasts too long, and she eventually grows bored of other people that she “befriends” this way. On the flipside, she also gets too frustrated and rowdy when people fail to recognize when she tries to genuinely get to know them. She can’t win for losing and chooses to blame Monroeville for her maladjustment. Charlie gravitates toward other people who display the same penchant for disposability when it comes to others.
the history
father ♦ Cassius Devereaux, 55, construction foreman mother ♦ Melissa Devereaux, 54, waitress siblings ♦ none important people ♦ very few hometown ♦ New Orleans, Louisiana overall history ♦ Charlotte Rae Devereaux practically grew up in Monroeville; it was all pretty much all she knew growing up. She was ferried to Monroeville as soon as her powers manifested at the tender age of eleven. Though not bombastic or physically dangerous, Charlie had always suffered from social disorders that made her more disposed to misuse of her powers. Her parents, Cash and Melissa, were struggling to keep their heads above water, and Charlie needed a lot of attention and time. When she started affecting other children into believing they were her friends when, in reality, they had barely talked to her before, they knew something was up. The two, unwitting humans, brought her into Monroeville, who initially viewed her as just a regular, troubled child, but her interviewer left the room with memories of the interview that the cameras could directly contradict. Though they weren't quite sure what Charlie had, they brought her in under Monroeville supervision.
Charlie's powers, and her nondiscriminatory morality in using them, garnered her attention early in her stay at Monroeville. She found it quite entertaining to temporarily blank certain patient's memories of others, but her budding powers were easy to spot and overcome. She made a few enemies, and originally, she was exclusively kept under supervision of caretakers who could block her powers. Monroeville was rather content to keep Charlie on blockers until they realized her attention-seeking streak could be used for their own purposes. They started training Charlie and weaned back the caretakers until she was loyal to the hospital.
As her powers and finesse with them grew, the board decided to put Charlie to a real test. They wrangled in her parents under false pretenses and asked the then-fifteen-year-old Charlie to erase their memories of her. Having already dissociated from her life before Monroeville, Charlie took on the task eagerly, but she had never worked with that much history before. Erasing it all and completely took a lot out of her physically and mentally, and she was nearly comatose for a full two weeks as she fought to regain control. Eventually, the test worked. Cash and Melissa walked out believing they were a childless couple, and Charlie had proven herself to Monroeville.
The hospital gave her a bit more “freedom” and privileges, and even though she still maintained social and behavioral problems, they allowed her to go to a local university once she “graduated” from Monroeville. After years of going to school on the weekdays and being secluded in the hospital on weekends, Charlie was able to move into a small, hospital-owned apartment near the university. She ended up going through graduate then medical school before earning her license as a practicing psychiatrist after eleven years as a college student. This legitimized her work at Monroeville, even though she prescribed memory wipes more than she did meds.
Ever since earning her title at 29, Charlie has worked exclusively with Monroeville, where she is careful to maintain her usefulness to the facility. She is aware that the only reason she is allowed to act like a relatively normal person and not a tortured patient is because of her ability, and she relishes the thought. She is a willing cog in the wheel of power at Monroeville and finds anyone who doubts the work they do to be rather weak-willed.
